Abortion or No Abortion A Woman's Right to Choose
Women Should Have the Right to Choose
Let me start by saying that I am not a pro-choice or pro-life individual. I just believe that everyone should have a choice in how they live their lives. I am a product of the 70s. I came along during the time when an abortion was something that only the women from wealthy families could afford to get abortions. This meant that for the most part minority women did not have a choice in the matter. It meant that these women often put their lives in danger by going to back rooms in dirty surroundings and have abortions performed. For those individuals who are so concerned about unborn children, this means of having an abortion really was horrific for the unborn child. Often times the mother would wait until the last possible minute to have an abortion and the baby was killed after it was born. This is really unthinkable.
Coming Out of Darkness on the Abortion Issue
Finally America realized that making having an abortion legal saved lives. They passed Roe vs. Wade which left it up to the mother whether or not she wanted to have children. Often time these mother's were more or less children themselves. They were in difficult situations and was looking for a way out of the situation. After abortion became legal it seemed that more teenage mothers wanted to keep their children than before it was legal. This is probably because it became more acceptable to be a teenage parent by this time. My point is even when given a choice most mothers to be would not choose to have an abortion. It seems to me that the Roe vs Wade decision was one of the best decisions made by this country because it truly allowed a woman to decide when and if she wanted to become a parent. I have seen way too many girls end up in marriages that were not good for them because of a so called shot gun wedding. The mother and father of the baby both became resentful of each other and the child often got caught in the middle. I think that some of these children would have been better off if they had not been born under these circumstances.
Stupak Amendment Going Backwards
I could not believe it when I tuned in to watch the debates about health care reform and heard about the Stupak amendment. This amendment set the cause for women's rights back about 40 years. Once again a lot of old men are making a decision on something that does not directly affect their lives. I thought America had gotten beyond trying to tell a woman what to do with her body and soul. This Stupak amendment seems to go against everything that I thought the health care reform was about. If we are to truly have health care reform I don't see how we can pass a bill that will restrict medical care on some of the poorest people in our country. I cannot believe that we do not trust women to do what is best for them and their unborn child in regards to abortion. This is truly a decision that should be made by the women with the advice of their doctor. I can see why the women should have to pay for their own abortion, but I do not understand why they should not be able to select their own insurance company for other health care needs. These two issues should have nothing to do with one another.
If the Stupak Amendment stays a part of the health care bill, my choices will be limited in which companies can participate in the pool of providers for health care. This simply does not make any sense. All health care is subsidized by some form of government assistance. In the case of the Stupak amendment however, only the women will be treated differently when it comes to health care. As a woman I am truly tired of being treated as though someone has to protect me from myself. After all I wonder how a man would feel if I said he was too old to have sex anyway so why should my tax dollars help pay for his viagra. He would think I was absolute crazy. Just as I think it is absolutely crazy not to allow a woman to decide whether or not to have an abortion. It is not up to me to judge someone on this issue. The woman who has an abortion must deal with that decision in their own way..
