All the World's a Fog

(My first attempt at world politics commentary!)

The fog slowly creeps through the trees, bit by bit encasing the bare branches in a fuzzy glow. As the fog continues to inundate the surroundings it becomes thicker, gradually erasing the trees that once stood before. Are they still there? Could you find them in the fog? Disorientation becomes the norm. And as if a disease the hazy fog before you, inundates through your eyes clouding all judgment inside. Life is but a fog. Every moment the possibility of climbing the tallest tree to reach beyond the fog is in grasp but what direction do you take?

What will it take to clear the air? New government policies? Individual understanding? Or maybe the fog is just a predecessor to the ever growing Hurricane just over the horizon?

All the world’s a fog, voices calling out to those they cannot see. Blindness and confusion spin people in circles. The once brightly lit lights glow much dimmer in a fog. Is the world returning to a fog bank? Have the seas of uncertainty, stirred by terrorist attacks, wars, hunger and economic distress created a fog bank that the world is now trapped? A step forward could mean a step off a cliff but so does a step backwards…and if you don’t make a move, well you don’t go anywhere. What will it take to clear the air? New government policies? Individual understanding? Or maybe the fog is just a predecessor to the ever growing Hurricane just over the horizon? World dynamics and politics are volatile now a day, tensions between friends and enemies keep ticking up. The moral dilemmas, which were so easily answered 15 years ago, now sit in a fog of false information and extremism, eliminated from anyone’s vision.

The mystery of fog is that it conceals what is right in front of you, like the future we cannot see. The world seems to be stuck in a fog, nothing is clear anymore; every decision is questioned over and over. The ripples of the financial crisis of 2008 continue to slosh back and forth like in a small tub, drowning some while leaving others dry as a bone. The wars are slowly coming to an end in Iraq and Afghanistan but are things any better? The Arab spring has taken a stumble as we enter into a new year, the questions of Syria continue to present unsettling facts, as well as fractions on the world stage. The great feats in globalism that have connected so many people and cultures over the last decade has also tied us together, even as parts of the global ship begin to submerge into the icy waters of financial ruin. What does this all mean? Where is the world headed? This foggy view of world politics and financial crisis can be the confusion before the sun burns off the haze, illuminating the world in a better future, or is this the new norm? As tensions grow between people and government, States and Nations, philosophies and religions are we on a brink of devastation, combat and war? Only time will tell as we navigate through this ever thickening fog, all tied together yet struggling in different directions. All the world’s a fog but it only takes a slight breeze and some sunshine to burn it off, eventually we will see blue skies again!

I voted for the sun to burn off the fog as that is my deepest wish. My biggest fear however is that we are heading for self destruction. I agree with your words here and live in hope of a turn around ending all negativity and war and the rampant spread of greed and disregard for our natural world. Let the sun shine brightly very soon. A thought provoking hub, thank you. My votes and SHARING.

Love your fog photo :)

It's been while since I've read some good hubs, but I had to stop by this one knowing I would see some beautiful photos. And I was not disappointed! The fog in California has left me in a poetic mood, and fog seems to have inspired you the same way. I love the extended metaphor here. Very thought-provoking and somehow quite hopeful. I voted for the sun burning off the fog because these situations tend to be cyclical if you look at the historical pattern. Things have to turn around, right?

Thanks Megan for the kind comment and yes this hub began with me sitting on a train on a really foggy day, the mystery of the fog is just so inspirational! As I wrote it I realized there was a great metaphor in it! I'm glad you enjoyed the writing, the photos and found it to be positive!

This is a cool hub. It is one of the rarer works of writing that is both in a form of art and makes a [real] message (unlike a lot of songs, though they're not writing).

I have bookmarked this and will take a look at it again in the future. Voted up. #happy2years
