Come To The Rent Guidlines Board

We've reached that time of the year again, to witness the horse and pony show known as the Rent Guidelines Board final vote on how much to raise the rent on rent regulated housing. Despite the call by Council Speaker Christine Quinn for a rent freeze, an early vote passed a 2% to 4.5% increase on one year leases and 4% to 7.5% for two-year leases. The public will have an opportunity to voice their concerns about what an increase would mean for them at a hearing at Cooper Union on June 15th. In recent years community groups have organized their members en masse, with noisemakers in hopes of forcing the meeting to a standstill and stalling the final decision which, in actuality, was already determined weeks before the final vote.
