For all that is worthwhile....

If there is a Satan,

and I surely think there is,

why would you want a substance

to make you one of his?

The riddle with which to wrestle

Is just that plain to see:

before you cross his trestle,

think of all that you can be.

The future still is yours.

No matter how far away.

Keep pulling on the oars,

There is a brighter day.

An artificial life

is not for you or me.

Each day can have its strife;

that's surely plain to see.

No one said it's easy.

You've known that from the start.

That drug can make you queasy,

and even stop your heart.

When conscience asks "Should I?"

The answer comes so clear.

Just stop to ask: "So why,

when cost can be so dear?"

He wants you to be sad.

He tempts you with "just fun."

His "trips" can be so bad,

You'll wish that one was done.

Watch the face that's tempting.

You know you see a lie.

The prick comes with its sting.

One rush before you die.

One step forward, one back,

Today you can decide

The path your feet will track.

He'd take you for a ride.

For all that now is dumb,

for all that is worthwhile,

just say "No thank you chum"

and say it with a smile.

Beautiful poetry with a powerful message.

"Watch the face that's tempting. You know you see a lie. The prick comes with its sting. One rush before you die."

It is difficult to see why the victim will nor respond to these lines and choose life.

MsDora - Surrendering everything for a momentary "fix" is not a fix at all. Addictive rugs don't cure or fix anything. They just add an overwhelming, uncontrollable new problem that is all-consuming. For those who trick, tempt, or tease someone onto the downward path to addiction, there must surely be a special torture chamber in Hades.

Very powerful message done poetically. I can see why when doing drugs was new, people wanted to try them, but years later the cost to life is plainly dear, so I don't understand why the lesson can't be learned.
