Everything Is Not Racism

My daugher who is black participated in the cosplay during Anime conventions from the time she was 14 years old. She has done all types of characters. One year she dressed up as an Asian male because it was her favorite character at the time. At that time she was only 14 years old. In our household we did not make everything about race because everything is not about race. The purpose of these events are for people to have fun in a safe atmosphere. There is no reason for anyone to accuse someone of racism for portraying a character likeness unless the character itself represents some racists characteristics, for example hitler. Your question is a good one. But I can tell you from experience there is nothing racist about attending a convention and wanting to portray your particular character as realistically as possible.

Think of it this way - if you went for an acting job and the director pictured the character as being white before you tried out for the job, wouldn't you want to be judged on your ability and not be refused the role just because you had the wrong skin color. The people who are making comments about cosplay have the purpose of these events all wrong. Do not fall into the trap of no doing what you would like because of someone else's prejudices. Just remember you can't control how other people act you can only control how react to the action. Do whatever cosplay character you want, as realistically as you want and have a good time at your event.
