"Bloody Lady of Čachtice"

Elizabeth Bathory born August 5th 1560 may quite possibly have been the most prolific female serial killer in the history of the world. She is credited with having killed over 600 young women. She killed them to get their blood to bathe in as she believed that the blood of the young women would keep her young forever. She was a Countess in the Bathory family and lived in what is now Slovakia.

She is also known as the Bloody Countess and as the Bloody Lady of Cachtice. In the region today where she once lived she is known as Countess Dracula. It is said that she would bathe in the blood of virgins thinking that if she did that she would remain forever young. Many people at the time made the claim that she was a vampire.

It was after her husbands death that she and four people who helped her with her evil ways were arrested and charged with the death and torture of hundreds of young women. Several witnesses that testified at her trial said that she was responsible for the deaths of over 600 young women most of them virgins. And many of them as young as 12.

Cachtice Castle where Elizabeth Bathory was bricked up into a set of rooms in the Castle. She lived for four years bricked up into the rooms with only a small hole for a bucket and food to be passed in and out.

It was in Cachtice Castle in present day Slovakia where Elizabeth Bathory was bricked up into four rooms with only a small hole to pass a bucket and food in and out. She lived for four years in her prison before she died on August 21 1614. When she died the small hole was bricked up and was not opened again until the castle was badly damaged in the Second World War. Her skeleton was removed from the castle and she was buried in an unmarked grave in the castle yard.

Elizabeth Bathory was convicted of the murder of 80 young women and her four associates were convicted as well. She was forced to watch as they had their fingernails ripped out , and then they were thrown alive into a fire where they burned to death  before being bricked up in Cachtice Castle. The only thing that spared her life was the fact that she was of Royal blood. So she was ordered walled up in Cachtice Castle for the remainder of her life. She lasted for four years. She was never again allowed to look at herself in a mirror because of her crimes and her lust for youth by bathing in the blood of her victims. It is said that the authorities at the time made sure their was nothing in her rooms that she could see herself in and her guards were deaf and mute. It was ordered that she was never to hear human speech again. It has long been the rumor that she died screaming and trying to dig through the castle walls with her hands.

It is said that Elizabeth Bathory was one of the cruelest serial killers of all time as most of her young victims faced severe torture before they were killed and their blood was drained for the Countess to bathe in. It is said that she would bite the flesh off of her victims faces , genitals and other body parts. And she tortured her victims with large needles that she would heat red hot in a fire. There was testimony given at the trial of the Countess that she had a book that listed the names of over 650 of her young victims but the book was not found. If so then she truly was the most prolific female serial killer in the history of the world.

She is undoubtedly the definition of evil. I, personally, do not think she was mentally ill. Possessed by the devil? I'll go with that one.

What monster she give me the creeps

Her family may have converted to Protestantism about the time of her birth, as did much of Hungary but the Protestant Reformation in Europe in the 16th century was more to do with political safety than beliefs, as we understand them today. In fact her family name Bathory / Bar Tolmay is a Jewish Gypsy name. Elizabeth was related to Vlad the Impaler, also a psychopathic Jewish Gypsy, whose grandmother was a Bathory /Bar Tolmay as was his mother who was also his wife, Cneajna Bathory . Please search the term 'Blood libel' to understand more. This is why Jews were persecuted in Europe and why many try to disconnect Vlad and Elizabeth from their true race by claiming they were Christian.

Very interesting story about Elizabeth Bathory. She was wicked and evil. She took pleasure in torturing and murdering the young girls, until she finally got caught. She must have been really twisted to be doing those kinds of things to her victims. Her story is interesting and horrific.

One comment states "...times have changed.". I see little change. Those with money still break laws and entice young women. The persuit of beuaty drives women and men to torture themselves with workouts that do not increase the overall symmetry of the human form. And, have no benefit In the wild. A body builder wouldn't last an our on a desert island. The fashion industry is the largest polluter on the planet. With ink, paper, and chemicals for publications, packaging, makeup, waredrobe... Producing 70% of the worlds pollutants while satisfying the desires of only one present of the people on the planet. This useless industry has turn the quest for health into a machine for bulimia and androgyny in male and female.

Those who "Make it" are domed to be surrounded by sicofants and yes men. While many churned up by the machine of beuaty will be turned out on the streets as prostitutes.

elizabeth is the most evil i don't wanna be her daughter!!!

She was simply mentally unstable. She also suffered from epilepsy and had numerous seizures. She wasn't evil or a monster. Elizabeth was a sick person and her illness led to her actions.

The whole story likely may have been a huge fabrication. It seems outrageous (although no more so than her supposed crimes), but they may have simply wanted her money and land. Some facts: (1) she owned one third of country/regions land. She was richer than the king. (2) King Matthias II who prosecuted her owed her some17,000 gold coins. (3) Elizabeth Bathory was a lesbian, a friend of Jews, leader of women’s rights, and a female Protestant owner of vast estates surrounded by male dominated Catholic church. (4) It is said most of the witnesses brought "hearsay" to court. (5) She was disallowed from defending herself. She was not even present at her “trial”. (6)The handful of eyewitnesses against her were all reportedly tortured. (7) Due to the daily “punishment” and cruelty that servants and peasant women faced from nobles, the charges had to be way over the top (although there seems to be too many details and specifics for them to be a complete fabrication). (8) Why was the trial transcripts sealed upon order of the king? I am no feminist, and I am not saying that I totally believe this alternate history; but I think this side of the story should be heard. Judge for yourselves; perhaps the truth is somewhere in between? One does have to wonder.

What a which. She would torture some of the girls by putting paper between their toes and lighting them on FIRE! Whoever wrote the must have done a lot of research. GOOD JOB! LOL

I read another hub about her about a year ago. I was so intrigued by the story I checked a book about her out at my local library. I couldn't finish it, it was so vile the things that woman did. She was sadistic, and perverted beyond what I could imagine. I truly believe that she inspired the story of the Vain Wicked Queen in the Snow White tale, as she was stated to stare in a mirror all the time and wanted to remain beautiful forever. The drinking and the bathing in blood is just another sickening part of her psychotic behavior.

a counterpart of Count Dracula. interesting hub!

There were some tragic and tormenting things in her past perhaps these events may have conspired against her to create a monster or at least inspire her on a subconcious level to begin the quest for blood. According to a recently published psychologist Elizabeth had an injury to the back of the skull at a young age which may have caused brain damage--- I don't really know where I am heading with this but she may have just been crazy or there could have been a cause.

Thanks much for your comment.

I and a friend visited Cachtice Castle in 2001 and we were told by the guide there that she did indeed bathe in the blood of her victims.

We were even shown what they claimed was the very stone bathtub that she was said to have used for her blood baths. They told us that she believed that if she bathed in the blood of especially virgins that she would remain forever young. In the area there today they call her Countess Dracula. Quite possibly for the benefit of the tourists.

Chris Friend 7 years ago

Another really fine hubpage. I thought about writing on her myself. Some vampire researchers believe that her daily bloodbaths were a Medieval Urban Legend. They say when the the castle was being investigated that she walked out covered in blood as if she had been bathing in it, not that she actually had been Best

I read about her only once before and she gave me the chills then as she does now when reading about her. She just might also be the most evil woman that ever walked the face of the earth as well. Thanks again.
