Freerice.com
Rice Fact #1
Rice is an ancient cereal grain and today sustains two-thirds of the world’s population.
FreeRice was created in 2007 and on their first day of operation they were able to donate 830 grains of rice. Through marketing and outreach, they were able to donate 42 billion grains of rice in their first 10 months of operation. In 2009 freerice.com would be handed over to the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP), who now owns and operates the site to help fight world hunger.
The concept of the website is simple, yet it has been able to have a huge impact. People go on the site and answer multiple choice question in a subject of their choosing. For each question answered correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to the UNWFP. The questions increase and decrease in difficulty based on how well the participant is doing. If a question is answered incorrectly, it will appear again later and keep reappearing until answered correctly. The rice donated is paid for by the advertising banners displayed below the questions. Through reinforcing education, Freerice has found a way to help feed the hungry in an entertaining way.
Rice Fact #2
More than 3.5 billion people depend on rice for over 20% of their caloric intake.
Rice Fact #3
The International Rice Research Institute estimates that the world needs to produce an additional 8-10 million tons of rice annually.
Freerice can be a wonderful tool no matter what your educational level. Kids can use it for extra practice, teachers could encourage students to participate as an assignment and adults can use it to sharpen their own skills. I have found it a wonderful time killer, rather than checking Facebook for the 10th time in the day or playing a mindless game on my phone, I can go and answer a few questions and make a difference in the world.
In 2010 UNWFP updated the site to make it more relevant to the social networking world we live in. By creating an account it is possible to play amongst friends and strangers to acquire different rankings and achievements. You can still play and have your correct answers go to buying grains of rice, but your personal results will not be saved once you leave.
A list of the subjects used for the question can be found below. Go to freerice.com and help give rice to those in need.
