Gay Marriage and today's society

Source

When did America land of the free; turn into America, we only allow people to believe as we do? How did the Christian religion become synonymous with the Bill of Rights? Wake up people we do not live in the Stone Age anymore. This writer is absolutely disgusted with the state of ignorance that society seems to live in. According to, (Mauray & Caulfield) A North Carolina man by the name of, Pastor Charles Worley; called for gay and lesbian people to be locked behind an electric fence and left to die. Moreover, Pastor Sean Harris urges his congregation to punch their kids in the face and “slap their limp wrists” if they show “signs” of being gay. Not surprisingly people like this have led the State of Tennessee to create a bill that would amend the anti-bullying act. According to this bill, it should be ok to bully gay people as long as it is done in the name of God, Politics, or philosophy.

Since everyone and their brother seem to be pulling out Bible quotes; let us take a look at some that do not support their view:

· Luke 6:37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

· Romans 14:10 you, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.

· 1 Corinthians 4:5 therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

In this writer’s opinion, these verses state very clearly that only God can judge and God judges’ people based on what’s inside. So, why then do so many people feel that it is ok to hate in the name of God? Some may say that these people are just looking for a scapegoat so that they can play out their sick little version of how life should be.

So, let us look at another question that people are asking. Why do homosexuals want to take part in a religious ceremony that is supposedly blessed by a God that hates them? First and foremost, Marriage in the eyes of God in the time the Bible was written was extremely skewed. It is defined as a marriage between a man and a woman, Man and his brother’s widow, Man and the woman he raped, male soldier and his prisoner of war, man and wife and wife’s slave, man and wife and man’s concubines. I believe that the point has been made. How in the world is this ok; and it is not ok for (just two) consenting adults who love each other to be united in love?

Secondly, most people who are fighting for this right in fact only want it so that the one that they love will be taken care of if they shall die before them. In most cases when two people fall in love they are surrounded by joy and happiness from those around them. Unfortunately, when two people of the same sex fall in love they are sometimes afraid to tell the people closest to them for fear of shameful persecution. How in the world is this something that is still happening today? The funny thing is that homosexuals are now allowed to fight and die in a war for a country that not only condemns them but also want to prevent the loves of their life from receiving their military benefits when they die.

In conclusion, this article is not written to change anyone’s mind about whether Gay marriage is a sin or not. Everyone has their own opinion and most people have substantial support to back up their view on this subject. This article was written to explain to people that there is such a thing as live and let live. The Christian God actually condemns judging others because that is his job alone. Finally, people who love someone of the same sex are not doing it to change anyone’s views, or to offend others. They are doing it because they were born too.

You left out the verse that says if a man lie with a man or a woman lie with a woman they will believe a lie and be damned??? Christians and conservatives are very tolerant of the gay community. We simply want them to stop PUSHING themselves on us. This last sentence has been used as WE are the ones pushing our views on THEM! We don't need them fighting for equal marriage laws, nor forcing their ideology on innocent children in schools etc. Besides how much depravity are you willing to take? In the next 20 years will you write hubs saying we are in the dark ages because we don't want adults sleeping with small children?............careful what you fight for!

I see nothing wrong with LGBT rights, and respect the rights of anyone to be happy. Even if some personally don't like it, there is no justification for preventing LGBT indvls from having equal benefits under the law. It's time to put aside differences and live together, or at least agree to disagree.

Good hub, voted up and awesome.

An interesting Hub and outrageous statements from that NC pastor, though nothing particularly shocking. Really, I don't think, if I ran a news organization, I would halt everything else and go, "We interrupt for breaking news! A Christian pastor said something blatantly foolish and illustrated his ignorance from homophobic filth he espoused!" as it isn't breaking news.

I did see a video that dealt with an apology he made afterwards, which is perhaps worse. If you are going to be an neanderthal, embrace it! Don't backtrack because of a little attention. Thanks for the Hub, though I don't see the point of the Bible quotes, as something as invalid as that shouldn't be quoted to combat invalid statements it makes. Rated up and awesome!

American Romance, I believe that you misunderstood the purpose of this Hub. I apologize if I led you to believe I was attacking peoples views that are not my own. I stated in the article that everyone has their own views and I was not trying to sway their views. I did not mention the Bible quotes that are against homosexuality because I am not arguing whether or not homosexuality is a sin. I am arguing that Tolerance is a virtue and judging others is not our responsibility. I would never condone adults sleeping with children I understand how your personal views may relate the topic of pedophilia and homosexuality. However, in my personal opinion I find the comparison ludicrous. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such a passionate comment! =)

The Gays, their track record speaks for itself. Whatever they touch, it sure doesn’t turn to gold. They brought us Disco music in the 70s, the AIDS disease in the 80s, the Dot Com tech bubble in the 90s, the housing bubble in the 00s and now during the devastating financial and moral crisis of the 10s they demand more rights. Really. That’s so sad it’s almost funny.

Your comment is so sad it's hilarious. I sincerely hope that that was a Colbert-esque comment, as it really could go either way.

The fact that people like AR comments on this article is not surprising. Poeple who have zip education on homosexuliaty is ignorant. and in reality should be pitied, i don't in any way pity him. I do feel sorry for him, how very sad to hate a group of people who were born different. God's commandment, Judgement is mine...

@always exploring

Indeed! I went back to read his comment, as I originally didn't because, once you've read a couple, you know he's too far gone, and I think it's interesting that he thinks legalizing same-sex marriage is them forcing their beliefs on him. Also, that they have some sort of "ideology" and they are forcing it on children! The things people think and say...

I have realized over the years that there is no end to how cruel and uneducated people can be. From this Hub I have learned that some people compare homosexuals to a sort of cult pushing their views on everybody else and destroying young children. Other people just blame everything bad that ever went wrong in the world on gay people. People like this SHOULD be pitied; nothing more nothing less. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such an engaging comment, it is always nice to hear from you! =)

What happened to live and let live?

Steve Orion profile image

@WD Curry 111

In many people's eyes (see comment #1), it is an invasion of behavior they see corrupting and immoral. They view gays as less than human and as invading their lives. They view it as, "We don't actively murder gays, so we don't violate their rights. If we allow them to marry, it's a violation of OUR rights! Also, think of the children who will be hypnotized into this sinful lifestyle choice!"

What happened to "live and let live?" It never was in abundance, but is growing everyday with the weeding out of social ignorance in our society.

WD, that is the point I am trying to make =). The thing is I sometimes get upset by peoples ignorance . I need to remember that whether I agree with people or not they are certainly entitled to their opinion. If I ever forget this I will be doing the same thing they are, judging unnecessarily. Thanks for your reply!

@ Steve,

It is growing everyday and for that I am hopeful. However, the hate seems to be growing more intense in some areas everyday as well.

Steve O and Lisa -

Maybe I am too optimistic. I expect Christians, like me, to follow the Bible. Now there is a place in there, in one of the epistles, where the writer doesn't speak well of homosexuality. You will hear it quoted often.

However, in the next breath, he says, "Who are you to judge, who do the very same things?"

Someone may balk and say, "I have never done anything like that!"

Sorry about your luck. He rattles off a list behaviors, mind sets and attitudes that are disgusting to God. Excuse me, I have been guilty of them all. No one could stop me with a law.

WD, That was the whole point of this article , you put this so eloquently.

It was super hard for me to write this Hub from a Christian standpoint because I am not a Christian. I have read the Bible cover to cover more than once though, and the way that I understood it is exactly the way you just explained it. Thank you so much for your reply!

I will explain opposition as I see it. Most who hate gay people have chosen to view homosexuality as the worst sin as a matter of convenience: they might be terrible people, but they will never be gay. So if you use homosexuality as the only measure of a good person, then they can easily paint themselves as saints. (This is also why *men* obsess about abortion as a terrible sin; it's one thing they'll never have to choose.) Most of these homophobes tend to be older, and often near death, so they're trying to convince their higher power that they were good people.

The same goes for televangelists who are often awful people, too.

Lisa, it's awesome to see that you have an opinion and it's strong. You stand your ground on what you believe and I commend for that. It doesn't make any sense that we're supposed to believe in "separation of church and state"... that doesn't seem to be case does it? I for one believe people should love and marry who they want. We are no one to judge another. I may not be a Christian, but I do believe NO ONE has the right to judge another. Thanks for the article, Lisa. :)

Lisawilliamsj this is a very good hub. I have written similar hubs on the subject of Christianity and homosexuality.

I believe God does not want us to judge gays and lesbians, but I believe it is His desire that those of us who take a stand as Christians would first, know that we cannot chang the hearts of gays and lesbians' secondly, we will never reach them through condemnation.

Finally, the Christian community is to be like Christ (which is the definition of a Christian) in showing compassion and love for those who see life and God differently. Christ died for us, while we were still sinners, not after we stopped sinning.

Ericdunbar, Thank you so much for your kind and well thought out reply!! Again I thank you for your wonderful comment!

Marriage is a legal contract between two people from the point of view of the government. I see no legal reason to deny marriage to gays. Personal morality shouldn't dictate laws. Almost everything from eating meat to driving SUVs would have to be illegal if we allowed the personal morality of any group in society to dictate out laws. Putting up with things you don't like is a part of life.
