Gun Running Gone Haywire

Congress Gets Stonewalled

The man pictured at the right was US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and he lost his life in the defense of our southern border. His death resulted from the actions of the ATF. Yes, the ATF. They set up a sting called "Operation Gun Runner" which was flying under the radar until the whistle was blown on the operation. Another agent named Zapata was gunned down - unarmed - on February 15th. The guns that were used were traced back to Operation Gunner.

Gun Walking 101 Video. Kinda long but the nuts and bolts.

When gun shop owners along the border noticed unusual gun purchase activity they naturally notified the ATF. You know little things like buying 575 AK47s. Gives new meaning to the term of being a "gun enthusiast." The response they received from ATF was rather odd. They told them to take a chill pill, they had things under control.  They were encouraging gun shop owners to allow the purchases.  Their definition of under control seems to be that once the purchases were being made on video tape, ATF personnel would track the purchasers right back to the border and then let them waltz on across the border with purchases in hand. Does that sound like a little bit more than insane to you?

The only way any of this saw the light of day was when the ATF had the whistle blown on them seemingly by their own agents.  Many of the agents thought it was nuts and that people were going to get killed.  They were right.  Between the time of the onset of the operation until the outting of it, it appears that over 2,500 assault rifles, pistols and .50 caliber sniper rifles were supplied, courtesy of the ATF, to the drug lords in Mexico. For those not familiar with 50 cals, when they hit you you are very aware of it - for just a second or two. What I have to firmly believe, doing my own research, is that if the whistle hadn't been blown this operation would still be in progress - operating under the radar. Why? The whole thing makes no sense to me.

Here's what Janet Napolitano had to say to Senator Grassley. It seems that she is, once again, the typical Washington mushroom. You know living in a dark room and being fed, or maybe feeding, horse hockey.

I know nothing, I see nothing BUT I smell something

Now one needs to maybe understand that the BATFE is under the auspices of the Justice Department, Eric Holder being the boss man, and not the Department of Homeland Security. However, shouldn't these two agencies be talking to each other and making each other aware of what these kinds of operations in progress are doing, or not doing? Don't hold your breath as long as Eric Holder remains as the Attorney General of this nation. Napolitano seems to have a terminal case of brain freeze so I have to pass on this myself. The point is they should have had cross-departmental communication on this type of operation since there is a natural bleed over

The ATF knew about the presence of these known gun smugglers, not only in the Phoenix area but all across northern Texas and in cities all across this nation. They were, and still are, walking among us as free as a bird. Why? This poses no threat to the security of this nation? Tell us why is you answer that one with a "no." So as you can see from the Grassley video, he got nowhere. He also got nowhere with other select members of ATF that the committee had before them. They want to try to hide behind the Justice Department's cloak of "we're conducting an on-going investigation" tap dance. Well, so is Congress Holder.

An "ongoing investigation" by Holder to me means "we're busy here covering this up and wiping the tracks out of the sand so you won't know which way we went." That was in the Senate. So now the House has swung into action. The stonewalling has continued by the Justice Department and the ATF, in particular, continues. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is conducting its own investigation. Darrell Issa, R-CA is the chairman of that committee and he is now threatening to hold the acting director, Kenneth Melson, of ATF fame in contempt? Why, you ask?

A subpoena for documents was issued on March 31st of this year. No documents have been produced. You also need to be aware that Melson is a known advocate of dismembering the Second Amendment. The controversy swirling around Melson is the reason he has "acting" before "Director." He had until April 13th to fork over the goods which seems like more than enough time to this frog. The Justice Department is falling back on the "open investigation" song and dance routine. How long does it take to find out that something isn't right in Omaha Holder?

Here's what Issa had to say about that assertion, "The Department's assertion internal policy to withhold with what it labels pending criminal investigations may not deprive Congress from obtaining those same documents if they are pertinent to an ongoing congressional investigation - particularly in a matter involving allegations that reckless and inappropriate decisions by top Justice Department officials may have contributed to the deaths of U.S. and Mexican citizens." I would have not used "may have" and inserted "did." But I'm not as nice as he is.

Do you smell something funny here? By not producing said documents does it maybe not give off the stench that a cover up may well be in progress? Or maybe if they think they stall long enough that this will all just go away? Senator Grassley subpoenaed the documents back in January as head of the Judiciary Committee and hasn't seen diddly squat since then either. Congress has the right to conduct its own "ongoing investigation" as Holder conducts his own "ongoing investigation."  We know Holder holds Congress in contempt. He has let that previously be known. Maybe it's time that Congress holds him, and the other big fish, in contempt.  Holder is dirty, has been dirty (remember Marc Rich?) and always will be dirty.

They allowed thousands of guns to cross the border knowingly and guess what? Those guns are now in the hands of the drug cartels running rampant across our southern border. It might not be the best time for a vacation to Mexico. You know that. But what we don't know is who authorized this operation where guns were openly allowed to walk across our border and be placed in the hands of some very bad, criminal types. What say you?

As Always,

The Frog Prince

Well done! I am happy you wrote about this. We knowingly supplied guns to the very people who are invading our country. Holder has to go and he really has to take Napolitano with him. They should take Obama with them and them maybe we would have a chance at dealing with our myriad of problems effectively. Up useful and awesome.

Froggy why do I feel like our Government got caught ? In their effort to remove guns from all citizens households I think they might have been trying to use Mexican cartels to make a case for their removal, till they got caught. Issa want's to investigate this and they would not even provide the info Issa asked for in a subpeona.

And I think we can all agree Napalitano has to go.

These people are not only disgusting, they are dangerous. They have already contributed to the deaths of several of our Border Patrol Agents, and most likely some of the civilian deaths along the border.

And the bad news is they will either skate on this, or find some underling to blame and crucify.

They need to be outta there.

This ATF is the same ATF that engineered the disasters at Ruby Ridge and Waco, and inspired Tim McVeigh to blow up the Murrah building in Oklahoma city.

And, since Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (the 'A-T-F') are all perfectly legal, why do we need an multi-billion dollar, inept agency to oversee them?

Disgusting to think all of those guns are now in the hands of people who turn them on us. Seems we have a knack for doing that.

It also seems that a lot of the "big fish" in Washington do more covering up than work. I wish we could hire an umpire to to knock on each one's door and give'em a thunderous "You're OUTTA HERE!"

Up and awesome, Frog!

Excellent article! I certainly agree that Holder and Napolitano need to be thrown out of their positions immediately. What a hoax! The ATF sure is useless since they knew and didn't act about these sales. Voted/rated awesome!!

Poolman - Dangerous people are known to do dangerous things and this is a prime example. Tony left a good observation. Remember back not too long ago when this administration was contending that the arms used in the Mexican drug war raging over the border were coming south from the US? Well DUH. Now we see one of the primary reasons why. Infringement on our Second Amendment rights might be the shadow in the background.

34th BG - Out of all the qualified people available people to fill that role, Obama paid back a political favor by putting a parrot as the head of DHS.

rkhyclak - Interesting. The Donald knows how to tell people "YOU'RE FIRED." Maybe we ought to hire him. He has no problem canning anyone at any time. Notice that The Whine House is saying, "No comment?"

Pamela - I took a poll recently that some e-mailed me asking if Holder should be fired. By the time I took it, 100% of the respondents had said "yes."

Will - I believe you can answer your own question my friend.

Janet Napolitano was a far left governor of Arizona, and now she's the far left head of Homeland 'Security'. The woman knows zip about security. The reason Obama selected her was her liberalism, not her expertise.

My son lives west of Tucson, and we often go out to a ranch owned by a friend. The amount of illegal activity is appalling, from human smuggling to drug running. The once pristine ranch is now a massive trash heap due to these animals. If a baby dirties a diaper, it is simply tossed on the ground! Adults leave their own bowel movements uncovered!

All ranchers now go heavily armed and in fear of their lives, while Napolitano and Obama look the other way. (Not that Republicans are much better!)

Sorry, but I have zero sympathy after all I've seen, and would someone please tell me why we need all these uneducated, backward slugs? We used to require immigrants to have a good trade and at least a high school education. Now, as long as they can vote for a Democrat, they are welcomed by the left.

Obama was crowing just the other day about the massive influx of new Latino voters, and he was smirking when he said it, because they are of the dependent class and will vote for Democrats.

WillStarr - This is a classic example of "You have to see it for yourself to believe it." Perhaps Obama would like to spend his next vacation in one of our lovely border towns. He could take a long walk along the border and see for himself some of the lovely trash piles left by illegals entering our country on their way to riches and freebies.

But no, they sit in their ivory tower and proclaim to the world that things are vastly improved along our border with Mexico. They bury their heads in the sand, or some other convenient place on their body, and totally ignore the problems we face every day in Arizona. Except of course to sue the state of Ariona for trying to protect its' citizens.

What a joke they are when it comes to border security.

I'm still convinced Janet Napolitano and Janet Reno were Siamese twins at birth, just separated with a meat cleaver....

I attended our local Tea Party, a special meeting, at noon today. Some special guests were running late, so while we were waiting, the pastor of the church where we meet ran a video for us--of 2 miles or so of illegal immigrant trail, complete (replete) with discards.

What I suspect he didn't know, though perhaps he simply didn't want to say, was what several items of "clothing" he filmed hanging in trees MEANT. A couple of pairs of women's shorts, and once, even, a bra.

Rape trees; those clothing items are "trophies" hung there by the coyote rapists for bragging rights....

Hi Frog,

I wrote alot of letters to Congress about this asking them to investigate.

BATFE claims the purpose of all this was to allow the weapons to go to the cartels so they could trace back the serial numbers when people are captured and identify the cartel members for arrest and prosecution.

My issue with the above is that possession of the guns after the straw buyers pass them to the cartel members in and of itself doesn't prove cartel membership. BATFE already knows that the drug runners have alot of weapons. Simply having weapons that were obtained as part of a BATFE sponsored "sales program" gets BATFE no closer to an arrest than finding any other guns. In either case, you need to catch someone in the act of doing something illegal, and the illegal act must be in the US, as we don't have any jurisdiction in Mexico.

My personal opinion, for which I can offer no proof, is that BATFE wanted to make the cross-border gun smuggling more extensive, so they would have a pretext to ask Congress for more money and grow the agency. More money means more personnel, more power, etc. They didn't care who got hurt in the process, thinking all the additional deaths would be in Mexico. It all exploded in their face when one of their own agents got killed.

The great comments above just about say it all. Frog, is there anything to what some are saying in that certain financial concerns are in league with the Mex. Gov. to eliminate cartel competition? It does appear that all out war is going on at the border. Up n use.

Dear Frog Prince, thank you so much for this article. The level of ignorance and negligence at the top levels of our government agencies is an atrocity.

Very Well Done

"My personal opinion, for which I can offer no proof, is that BATFE wanted to make the cross-border gun smuggling more extensive, so they would have a pretext to ask Congress for more money and grow the agency."

When the ATF botched the Waco raid so badly (the FBI had to take it over!), several news accounts noted that the ATF was considered an unnecessary agency, and was slated to be phased out. Was the Waco raid designed to justify their continued existence? Quite possibly.

Will - You may want to do a bit of research on Melson. If he could abolish the Second Amendment I am sure he would. Check him out.

Will, some people have theorized what you said about Waco. It can't be proven, but it can't be dismissed either.
