Are You Moved?

Will you help this little boy help America?

  • Yes, he puts me to shame.
  • Absolutely, if a 5 year old can hand over $20, why can't I?
  • No, I'm too selfish and feel the homeless need to help themselves.

I was initially going to use this story as my December Perspective for The Charitable Spirit. My own happenstance redirected me. As Christmas is just two days away and as a most worthy contribution to billybuc's H.O.W. crusade, I offer this hub with the utmost pride.

As I was reading the Sunday paper on December 2nd, I came across a feature in the Parade Magazine which is a weekly Sunday supplement to the Orlando Sentinel. The Feature was called “The Giving Issue, There’s no reason we can’t put hunger out of business in America.” It actually featured three individuals who are doing their part to end hunger. What struck me the most was a one half page blurb about a little boy named Joshua Williams who lives in Miami. This little boy is a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Read ahead for his story. It will bring tears of joy to your heart and restore your faith in our youth; too many of whom are misguided and selfish.

When Joshua was five years old his grandmother gave him $20 to spend on whatever he wanted. As he and his mom were in the car on their way to church one Sunday, his thoughts were preoccupied with what he was going to buy with his windfall. When stopped at a red light, Joshua looked out the window and saw a homeless man begging for money. Joshua told his mother he wanted to give the man his $20 so he could buy some food. His mother, leery that the homeless man would use the money for booze or drugs suggested they buy him some food and give it to him. Joshua’s response was, “What if he doesn’t like what we get him?” So, Joshua selflessly rolled down the window and gave his $20 bill to the stranger.

According to his mom, from then on Joshua kept pestering her about the need to help the destitute. They began cooking meals and giving them to the homeless on Saturdays. But that wasn’t enough for this little boy who had a calling spoken to him by God.

In 2007 Joshua and his mom established Joshua’s Heart Foundation which has given away more than 400,000 pounds of food. But this wasn’t enough for young Joshua who has today reached the ripe old age of eleven! He began a backpack program where they fill backpacks with food and give them to needy school children before the weekends. This is Joshua’s favorite crusade in his foundation. His thought is that if kids don’t have to worry about whether or not they will have a meal on any given day, they are better equipped to concentrate on their school work and prepare for the future.

Joshua’s Heart Foundation now has corporate sponsors helping to keep his dream alive and spread his goodwill. They now boast 700 volunteers and have a junior advisory board over which Joshua presides. To date, Joshua is the youngest recipient of the White House’s ‘Champions of Change’ award.

This little eleven year old boy has more prowess and stick-to-it-ism than most adults. To quote Joshua, “When I look at the faces of the people we’re helping and see how happy they are, that’s my favorite moment.”

Please take the time to go into Joshua’s website. I have not been more touched by anything I’ve read than what this very young boy with an old soul is doing for the needy in America.

This little boy truly is a giant in the Humanity One World community!

femme, this little boy made such an impression upon me that I saved the article until I could send out his message. He's amazing isn't he? When so much of our youth is all about me, me, me, it's refreshing to see such a young (old) soul wanting to give to others. I hope my post sends much support his way!

A bit humbling, isn't it? What separates Joshua from many adults is a willingness and compassion that only the young can have. He hasn't become jaded as so many adults do. Wonderful story, Sha; thank you for bringing this to the attention of everyone.

love to you and Merry Christmas!

Bill, what amazes me is Joshua, at age 5 wasnt't selfish as are today's kid. He doesn't think about his needs; he bleeds for those who are in need and he does what he can to help. I defy you to talk to 10 11 year olds and ask them what they want for Christmas. How many will think of others and how many will give you a long list of electronics their parents will go into debt to provide?

This little boy has touched my heart. God has definitely entered his soul and Joshua has embraced Him to the enth degree!

May we all learn from this little boy! Jesus is here today! And he has a fro!! :-)

Debbie, Joshua just completely blows my mind! And he's only 11! If we adults can't learn from him, we might as well curl up and die because we have not learned why we are here on this earth. Thank God for Joshua! Children are learning from him. Can we adults?

Maria, this boy has touched my heart in a way I cannot convey. Whew! He has so much more unconditional love in his heart than most of us - and it extends to strangers whose stories he doesn't even know!

Joshua is my modern day Little Drummer Boy!

Joshua, if this ever makes its way to you - God Bless You! You are a true inspiration and a modern day advocate of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

I like it. But all I got to say is; http://www.search-results.com/web?l=dis&q=Little+d...^BND406^YY^US&shad=s_0048&gct=ds&apn_ptnrs=AG6&atb=sysid%3D406%3Aappid%3D235%3Auid%3D42f41cb407b20e7b%3Auc%3D1337525077%3Asrc%3Dcrb%3Ao%3DAPN10645

In the day a shepherd boy to young to shepherd played a drum to guide those out in the fields back to camp. I little drummer boy was the beacon for the shepherds. Let it be so. Children will guide us.

Wow--what a story--and what a huge heart--we should all aspire to his generosity of spirit

Erickieker, I agree with your comment about children being the messengars that will guide us (if they have been chosen) but I don't know what your link is supposed to convey. If you've read the rules of HP, including links in comments is a no no.

Don't burst my bubble. I believe in this little boy more than I believe in grown ups!

Audrey, thank you for your comment and your belief in the human spirit!

Sorry about the link booboo. It is to the song little drummer boy. A drumming shepherd child too small to tend to a flock was chosen to beat the drums so that the shepherds and sheep could find their way to the camp for the night. Of course the ears of the sheep were better than the shepherds so they actually led the shepherd in for the night. Without the little drummer boy the sheep and the shepherds were lost. And so it is that without the love of the least of these we are all lost. Thank you God for Joshua.

Oh, Kimmie, bless your heart! Joshua is so much bigger than himself. I am tickled pink that you have joined him. In all the ugliness we see in the world today, this young soul is the epitome of HOPE and offers a message we elders should take to heart!

Mark, Joshua strikes such a cord; he is the epitome of H.O.W!

Eric, my favorite Christmas song is "The Little Drumer Boy". I see Joshua as today's drummer boy. I'm glad you saw the same in him. He is a blessed soul with a purpose as deemed by our Saviour. I believe that whole heartedly!

Amazing! He reminds me of my son - the Giving Spirit. Willing, actually eager, to give everything they own to whoever seems to be in need of it. But such a spirit can be controlled by financial circumstances, financial obligations and realistic and sensible partners/friends.

Fortunately Joshua Williams was guided in the correct direction by his mother and others.

bravewarrior 3 years ago from Central Florida Author

Martie how awesome for you to have such a huge heart! I agree with you regarding the financial end. Thank goodness people are reaching out to Joshua and his cause!

Hi bravewarrior,

A very interesting and touching story of a little boy who thinks and acts differently. Truly a kind and compassionate soul in this otherwise greedy and selfish world. He seems to be wiser than most of us adults. God bless him for his selfless service. Great hub and a worthy contribution to H.O.W.

Cheers, Rema.

Hi Shauna, this story touches my heart very deeply. Feeding hungry people is a cause near and dear to my heart and this little boy is so inspiring. What a special soul! When I first started reading it, it sounded so familiar, but I couldn't think why. Then I remembered the boy who did something similar. http://www.lrwf.org/

Claudia, this little boy touched my heart, too. How many little kids worry about anyone but themselves? I'll check out the link. Thanx for stopping by!
