Herman Cain is Innocent
A couple of weeks ago, the Cain Train was rapidly picking up steam and he was leading in most of the polls. Then a story ran in Politico that while Cain was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s at least two female employees complained to co-workers and management about sexually suggestive behavior by Cain.
What is sexual harassment? It is many things, but usually unwelcomed sexual advances, request for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. However, too often it is left up to the victim to define what is appropriate and what is not. The harasser can be the victim's supervisor, a supervisor in another department, a co-worker or someone who is not an employe of the employer, such as a client or customer. Sexual harassment is a serious charge, but one that needs to be investigated.
According to Cain, these allegations were found to be baseless. However, they both signed agreements that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. To many this suggests that Cain is guilty as charged, but this happens often in the workplace. It is cheaper to settle these cases instead of going to court.
On November 7th Sharon Bialek from Chicago appeared in a press conference with high-profile attorney Gloria Allred. Miss Bialek claimed that Mr. Cain had made unwanted sexual advances toward her over 15 years ago. I watched the press conference and I must admit her story did not make sense to me. What she claims would be considered a sexual assault. She did not tell her boyfriend the details because she was embarrassed. That was when I began to question her story. The first person most women would have told were their boyfriend or husband so they could beat the hell out of Cain. The next people to be told would have been the police. Why is she coming out now? What does she hope to gain from this? It has been reported that she has a history of lawsuits, bankruptsy claims, was involved in a paternity suit and has a troubled job history.
The identity of one of women who charged Cain of inappropriate sexual conduct has come out in the last week. Her name is Karen Kraushaar. She left the restaurant association and went to work for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The AP has learned from a former supervisor that while employed there she accused a manager of circulating what was described as a "sexually charged e-mail." The charges were later dropped, It appears she has a pattern of charging people with sexual misconduct.
I do not want to give the appearance that I do not think sexual harassment is a serious problem in the workplace. Real sexual harassment is something that a woman or a man should not have to experience. However, it is too easy to make charges that could ruin the reputation of someone. I do not have any proof, but these charges seem "fishy" to me. Why have they surfaced at this particular time? I believe Mr. Cain is a very smart man. Surely, he knew that if they were anything in his past like this that it would surface. To me this smells like an Obama "Chicago Style" smear campaign against a man he fears. Herman Cain is a black man who could possibly take some of the black vote in 2012. In a close election, this would hurt the Obama campaign.
Is Herman Cain guilty? Are these women lying? If so, why? These are questions, we may never know. However, until there is real evidence I think we should not rush to judgement. In America a person is innocent until proven guilty!
I may be wrong, but I believe he is innocent and I still support him for President. The American voter will have to decide whether or not they believe these charges. Is he a guilty man? I believe he is an innocent man!
Will Cain survive these allegations? That is something the voters will decide. The media will continue to focus on this situation, but my guess is that the majority of voters simply don't care about this story. Our economy is our main concern and we don't care about what did or did not happen 15 years ago. Let's get past this and get back to the business of choosing the nominee that can defeat Barack Obama in 2012!
