Homelessness and Poverty, Social Ills That Need Treatments

My second hub in the Hubchallenge...

HubChallenge Rocks!!!
HubChallenge Rocks!!!

Poverty and homelessness is now widespread and often ignored as it inflict a resounding blow to the system and exposes flaws in the mainstream of the society.

(Editor's note: This hub also provides answers to the question to: How to solve poverty and homelessnes  and How to eliminate poverty and homelessnes below.) Poverty and homelessness is crippling the underprivileged and unfortunate people in the "Third World" countries. The sights of smelly slums, beggars waiting for alms, pitiful disabled and elderly people, trash pickers doing there literal down to earth ways to earn a living, and mentally challenged people (victims of social pressures) patrolling every corners of the streets as if they don’t exists at all, are all widespread in most countries where progress seems out of reach, plagued with unending and stinging corruption and programs that could help yield employment were not properly implemented.

This predicament is indeed very alarming and bothering, as lives are lost each day because of hunger and its related effects. Many people that fall in the poverty line would morphed into hooligans, thieves, holduppers and the likes, that stirs a domino effect in the form of crimes.

Homeless children are plenty in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar, and what makes this problem wearisome is that these children are left out in the streets because their parents are lazy to look after them.

In Latin America, specifically in Brazil, poverty and homelessness is rampant in the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

About 2,300 homeless seek residence in the Park Station, Johannesburg, South Africa. An indication that poverty is also found in a wealthy nation, most of these homeless people have no sufficient water, toilet facilities and electricity.

In Poland there are about 300,000 to 500,000 homeless people.

There are more than 100 million homeless people across the planet and expect these to shoot up further because of the impact brought by the global recession that continues to wreak havoc on the different economies across the globe.

In a book published by UN titled Strategies to Combat Homelessness, defines homelessness as “Not having an acceptable level of housing provision. It would include all states below what may be regarded as adequate.”

Some of these people doesn’t have proper shelter and would seek sanctuary in abandoned buildings, under bridges, living like Nomads with carts as their mobile homes, will seek refuge in a man-made houses made from leftover materials like (old lumber, cartoons, plastic junks), train stations, park benches, stairwell or cellars.

Here are some pitfalls of the modern society in combatting poverty and homelessness.

Housing programs should be properly addressed in the form of not just ratifying them but to ensure full implementation of these endeavors. Corruption should be eradicated to prevent any substandard materials being utilized and smooth construction of these would be homes of our poor brothers and sisters will be realized.

Planning system should be concrete and progress of each should be regularly monitored when it is under the implementation and construction.

Each country should put importance in poverty alleviation program to help the poorest of the poor. Distribution of nation’s wealth should be felt even by those people who are affected with poverty.

Homelessness is the effect of each nation’s policies that were not properly given solution that created chain reaction that spur social problems like those related to crimes.

Youths especially those that are affected by poverty should be given government support. This is one of the most effective ways to help curb the sharp increase of homeless people, and eradicate the decays and plagues of poverty and its ill-effects. Each nation must be generous enough to give chance to these children and instead of branding them as problems; they should be treated as potential assets and stalwarts in helping bolster each nation’s economies.

Most of the communities in the entire Indian sub-continent(such as Bengali) are succumbed in ‘Culture of Poverty'(Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody is genuinely regret ed or ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst Politico-admin system, bad work place, weak mother language, continuous consumption of common social space (mental as well as physical, both). We are becoming fathers & mothers only by self-procreation, mindlessly & blindfold(supported by some lame excuses). Simply depriving their(the children) fundamental rights of a decent, caring society, fearless & dignified living. Do not ever look for any other positive alternative behaviour (values) to perform human way of parenthood, i.e. deliberately co-parenting children those are born out of ignorance, extreme poverty. It seems that all of us are being driven only by the very animal instinct. If the Bengali people ever be able to bring that genuine freedom (from vicious cycle of ‘poverty’) in their own attitude, involve themselves in ‘Production of Space’ (Henri Lefebvre), an intense attachment with the society at large - one different pathway has to create to overcome inherent 'hopeless' mindset; decent, rich Politics will definitely come up. – Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, 16/4, Girish Banerjee Lane, Howrah -711101, India.

Cool thoughts about poverty and homelessness. I'll appreciate another hub detailing these problems here in our own country. I'm sick and tired of everyday events seeing the dislocated poor in settlements not belonging to them rising in oppression against the Philippine government. This problem is everybody's concern. We all must address this properly, don't you think so? The loss of lives and property must be put to an end. God Bless our people!

you know.. being what most would call a conservative, you'd expect me to spout Free market, lazy bums and such like. Well I cant and wont.

Im well aware that many if not most of those who are homeless are nothing of the sort. I personaly think that it's a shame to hear so called christians berating the homeless and the poor for faults. and ignore the basic tenents of their religion.

the cuases are many, the solutions are few. Personally I think programs for help with mental problems and addictions. Job training. and adequate housing are a good start.

there are even programs like this, that are over regulated skewed to the group that's currently politically liked. single mothers, or Illegal aliens or what ever the flavor of the election year is. Corruption will never end with out some sort of Oversight committee that has no ties to any one political movement or office. and even then it will only blunt it not end it.

Thomas Jefferson believed Knowledge was the key to making one's life better. that's a good place to start.

Great hub...so you should consider putting your hat in the political arena to bring relief in an area so precisely addressed. We have a tendency to just see in our own community the problem. Your statistics are impressive but depressing. If everyone could take action, it wouldn't solve the issue, but it would at least make a small difference to a few.

It is scary as well as a sad notion... Governments should take more precautions to help those people, and also people should try to aid the homeless or the less fortunate people. Those are our societies and if we neglect them, we neglect our future...

Hawaii deals with this problem as well, which actually surprised me when i moved here. We have a wonderful Governor, Linda Lingle and she tries her best to solve it. There are also many wonderful citizens who have organized to help the homeless move on. I am familiar with this sad and pathetic problem having lived in the Philippines. There are some 1.5 million streetchildren in Manila alone, and theirs is a story of pain and horror. So much needs to be done. Great hub! Mabuhay ka!

This is not just a problem in third world countries, but a problem all over the world. Homeless does not discriminate on whether you are an American or Pole. It's a shame that in the county that is supposedly so keen on fighting the "axis of evil" cannot prevent hunger and impoverishment within its own borders. Thank you, GH, for bringing this up.

This is a worldwide concern to be true. I want to know when we as a nation are going to come together to address our own social issues here. we are so critical of other nations and what they may or may not be doing yet ignore the white elephant in the room. Before we can save the world we need to first save ourselves. This would accomplish two things, first it would shore up and strenghthen our own infrastructure, and second it would serve as an example and inspiration to other nations. In short we have to walk the walk not just talk. There needs be something done for sure though. There just is no practical reason why this occurs today given all the wealth in this world.

10% of the money spent on weapons would be enough to end hunger on our spaceship Earth, I would like to know how much is needed to end homelessness, maybe another 10%?
