H.O.W To Start A Group Against Racism?

Source

There are several hubbers who are starting to write excellent hubs about racism, including Angela Brummer. Please read her hubs, they are very good. Racism is not only about the color of someone's skin, place of National Origin, Religion, Sex, LGBT, Disability, the list could go on and on.

The question of this hub is how to start such a group. A group that would include anyone. The author of this hub is on disability, the other hubs show why, it takes too long to explain why. Disability, does not give one a lot of money, so highly publishing such a group would be impossible. Also, how could a name for such a group be made? A name that would include everybody.

There are other groups against racism, but not against everything. Here is a list of those groups. www.heartsandminds.org This link will give you much more information, then can be in this hub.

1) American Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee - This group is mainly for Americans and Muslims but at this time has no up to date information at this time.

2) American Institute For Managing Diversity.- This group is for many cultures which is a good thing. But, only for different cultures. So, it is pretty specific for what it is about.

3) Anti-Defamation League- This group is for Anti-Semitism in this country. But, that is the only problem this group deals with.

4) Artists Against Racism- This group was built to understand all people, but is not active at this point in time.

5) Campaign Against Racism- This group is also against racism and was in the United Kingdom, but is no longer active.

6) Center for equal opportunity- This center sponsors conferences, supports research, and publishes policy on issues related to race, ethnicity, assimilation, and public policy.

7) Co Action- This is a group of educators and design specialists. Basically, this group helps teachers, and gives links to other websites.

8) Cross Point Anti Racism- This is the biggest collection of human rights, anti- racism, reffugee's, women' rights, anti-fascism, shoah, Jewish organizations, migrant organizations, and others. It has been built and maintained by the Magnta Foundation in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

9) Eliminating Racism and Creating Equality- No longer working

10) National Association of Colored People- This is the most well known and is the oldest civil rights organization in the United States. An entire hub can be written and several probably have been written about it. It's website can be found it the website listed above.

Some of the groups here are still in use and some are not. Some are for one group, some are for a few groups. A lot of hubbers here, seem to feel that any type of racism, sexism, or hatred against homosexuals, lesbians, people with different religions, people with disabilities ( this list could go on and on) is wrong.

So, is there any way to start a group, even a small one, of people that do not hate each other even though we are different? Is there any way to let people know we exist? After my surgery for epilepsy, money is one thing I don't have, so advertising would be a problem. Maybe we can start a hub group, then a facebook page, then tweet it. How about a name? Can someone, be the one to help start it?

nice hub. I have been philosophically thinking the question what is race. I believe that there is only one race in the world, and that is human. Racism is the idea from scientific research that classifies people by their skin color (briefly). However, my argument is this. If race theory is really true, different races of people should get certain sickness or disease but not other. However, it is not like that. Everyone has possibilities to get different kind of sickness, no matter what they are. The race theory from scientist is only making certain features people better off.

In terms of morality question. Racism is going both ways but not only one way. This leads to chaos and no solution can be found at all. Imagine a white person have certain values on asian people and the asian people have certain values on white people. The whole argument goes into circle and never has a way to find the real solution.

The real solution to me is to treat people as people equal but not as where they come from. Forget about the race matter is the way to stop racism.

Does anyone have an idea for a good name for a group like this?

Larry Wall 4 years ago

Michele,

If you accept the theory that racism is really a form of prejudice, they consider something like People Against Prejudice, People Opposing Prejudice, People Understanding People or Accepting All Humanity.

Curiad profile image

Curiad 4 years ago from Lake Charles, LA.

Michele, If you wish, I will build you a website to contain this group. You come up with a name and then the domain only costs about 10 dollars a year. If you want a site like I have, it costs about 40 dollars a year but maybe you could get donations.

Just some thoughts.

Michele Travis profile image

Michele Travis 4 years ago from U.S.A. Ohio Author

Larry Wall How about Accepting All Humanity? I like that. That means we accept all people no matter what. That is a great name! AAH! Sounds like someone is happy.

Michele Travis profile image

Michele Travis 4 years ago from U.S.A. Ohio Author

You could do that? Then what do we do after we build a website? Maybe we could actually do this, but how do we advertise, then what does the website do to help people?

Curiad profile image

Curiad 4 years ago from Lake Charles, LA.

The site could be marketed in many ways, The content would be articles, blogs, Posts of other articles. You help people by educating them, sharing sources of information and help, organizing events etc. You could have contest for artists to submit art depicting One Race....

The list goes on and on.

Michele Travis profile image

Michele Travis 4 years ago from U.S.A. Ohio Author

Wow, well would you help me? I could not do this by myself. Maybe we could find some other hubbers to help also.

Larry Wall 4 years ago

Michele, I think the name you suggested is perfect--wished I had thought of it. It is your idea and take it in the direction you want, but I would start with a Blog, they can be formatted and the copy is easy the change and there is no cost. As interest builds, you could add the web page. When I was working, I found the direct approach best. Curiad may have the time and skill to keep such a site updated. I use to maintain a web site and updating it was more difficult than building it. You could take the approach that the Web site is somewhat static and has a link to the blog that is constantly updated. That way, you and a few you select could easily add material and links as they became available. There are several approaches, all have pluses and a few minuses, but can all work.

Larry the name was your idea. Accepting All Humanity. I shortened it to AAH. A blog is good, but please don't think I am an idiot. I haven't done much on the computer. I don't have a blog, or even know how to use one. How to get traffic to it, how to add material to it, or even update it. Or format it, you know what I mean.

Larry Wall 4 years ago

You can get a free one through Google. You promote it by first sending the link to all the people you know and asking them to do the same.

You work it into hubs, ask people to post the link on Facebook pages, send it to other groups that have a similar goal. Get it up and running and send it to the media. A short story and a link and if they are interested, they will do the rest.

Do not ask for donations, unless you get a Tax ID number and get the proper non-profit classification--not hard, just time consuming. You can urge donations to other groups that have proper credentials.

Something like this can be as simple as making people aware and pointing them in the right direction, or as complex as trying to fund the authoring of a book, building a traveling exhibit, etc. Start small, watch the response. Recruit the right kind of help and take it one step at a time.

Above all, do not let it become a burden for your--do not let it be "have to do this today"

I will help as I can.

Larry

Michelle, Larry is correct, a Blog is easier but what I had in mind is not hard and Yes I will help you. I use Wordpress. This allows for a blog, static web pages, forums, databases ....pretty much anything you want. If you really got going with this, you could create a foundation, and I know the people that can do that for you. Contact me through the HubPages Messaging and we can chat via email or even phone.

You have brought out a great interest in the combat against racism. I think your idea to start a facebook group would be a great way to bring awareness to it and help reduce the hate.

Steel Engineer profile image

Steel Engineer 4 years ago from Kiev, Ukraine

Not sure how you classed LGBT into a "race", it isn't. Other things that are not uncontrollable, but are choices: incest, NAMBLA, sex outside marriage, porn addiction.

Those things stir God's anger. Being white, red, black, or yellow has nothing to do with God's attitude toward any person.

Promoting what God says is wrong DOES bring destruction. Suffering in a war against a power or principality like lust or anger is one thing: promoting it as acceptable behavior is completely choosing the opinions of men over the opinions of God. Worse, it doesn't help the people carrying those burdens.

Michele Travis profile image

Michele Travis 4 years ago from U.S.A. Ohio Author

Debbie thank you for sharing, and yes we could use your help. You know a lot. We plan to try starting on Monday. We want to invite hubbers, facebook users, and as many others as possible. Don't really know how to do this, but know a lot more then I do. I will have a lot of questions.

God Bless you.

Steel Engineer In the 10 Commandments isn't one of them to love thy neighbor as thyself? None of them is to hate. We are also not to judge others. Only God can judge. No human can judge. Only God can judge. Also, who brought hate to this world. God or the devil? Also, the group is to accept humanity. God's children.

ty for another great read your hubs are always topical and generate interest (some interest I'm sure you would rather not deal with as your question posted indicated) but do as you always do stay true to your ideals and ignore the foul/odd-balls. Will look for your group on Facebook as well.

Actually I am starting a website with two other hubbers. It won't be up for a few day. It will be called acceptingallhumanity.com I will let as many as possible know when it is up. Right now, if you click on it, it takes you no where. Hope that does not last long.

Nope, it has a name. The site is up, but not working yet. It is name is acceptingallhumanity.com We found a host, but we won't be able to start working on it until Monday. You can click on it, but only see a lonely little front page we haven't even developed yet. It only has the name a simple description. There is a lot of work to be done. I don't know much about website development, but a few hubbers are helping me. Wish me luck!

Up, Useful, Awesome, Interesting, and shared with followers and on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

I saw in your profile that you are a Christian; learn from his example how to organize a group. He started by talking about his ideas with a few people -- some fishermen, etc.

If you start by inviting a large number of people to a founding meeting, the result will be a lot of squabbling, with factions fighting from the start to shape the organization. Start small, with consensus on the purpose of the group, the qualifications for membership, the name of the group, the principles upon which it will form alliances with other groups, and so on and so forth. Will it be a group focused on action? On discussion? On multicultural events? Or? Will decisions be made by consensus or by majority vote or by high muck-a-mucks or other? Thrash out and settle the many questions while the group is very small. Of course stay open-minded about being willing to change as you live and learn, but by getting the foundation laid while the group is just you and three to a handful or, like Jesus, a dozen like-minded friends, you will avoid a lot of frustration and false starts.

Then invite more like-minded individuals. When you get too big to meet in a living room, it may be time to start telling the public about the group and inviting all who agree with the groups mission, structure, etc. to join.

But first ask around some more to be sure a group does not already exist in your vicinity. Here in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, for instance, is the group ISAAC (Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy & Action in the Community). In Moscow, Idaho, where I lived for awhile, was the Moscow Idaho Human Rights Commission. Know your community so that you know if the group you want already exists and know what potential allies are near you.

The math of organizing is expressed in the Pete Seeger song One Man's Hands:

==============

One man's hands can't tear a prison down

Two men's hands can't tear a prison down

But if two and two and fifty make a million

We'll see that day come round

We'll see that day come round.

================

HoneyBB I have a website, but it is not really working. I don't know how to fix it. It is called www.acceptingallhumanity.com you can become a member, and but that is about it. No one can blog or talk in forums. It cost money to build it, but I can't afford to fix it. But, a group should be more then just a website.
