When Irene Came Our Way

A LITTLE OF HISTORY

Hurricanes season start on the months of August through September. Our Equator is the belt where the tropical temperatures feed the original stages that create an upcoming Hurricane, which actually are low pressure extensive areas that form over warm waters. If you see or picture in your mind the Gulf of Mexico Humongous shape, you will wonder why is this way. From unrecorded thousand of years, Hurricanes and the like, have been causing devastation that made the news in 2005 with Katrina.

But the Eastern Coast rarely get one of this Storms. but look again how the Potomac river and States like Maryland and Delaware and diverse areas from Virginia through Manhattan have a swampy littoral. Atlantic city as well, has a unique Island that Leni Lenape, an Algonquian tribe, held the island as their own Paradise. Which means that nature comes our way, every 200 or 300 years.

But back in 1821, New York city was an small town the size of about five football fields or so. An hurricane was not common to them, unless they thought the wrath of God came down to test them. A week or so, we felt a 5.9 tremor which was considered a strong quake, that also comes with no warnings every now and then(100, 200, 500 yrs). If you see the shape of the Appalachian mountain ridges, you will see like an slanted shape of rugged and crumpled group of mountains. This alternating ridges and valleys, were the highest mountains millions of years ago. Lucky us that nature spares us from stronger Earthquakes like the 'Big One'.

NEW JERSEY

SATURDAY AUGUST 27TH

10AM

Irene has landed on North Carolina's Moorehead area with a category 2 intensity. The news are warning New Yorkers and New Jerseyans avoid taking massive transportation and move away from the Oceanic areas. Myself went to get some spring water and food and people were worried. I see drivers in self induced calm, so far. Mayor Bloomberg has given his regular speech around 9am, warning again to Long Islanders, leave or prepare for the worst. Starting to get very cloudy in here. Little rain and drizzles and wind start to show up. We were told to leave to Pittsburgh, where my Kids are...but decided to face the storm, like others who actually are out of work. My Company told us to come to close the plant at 10 pm and that really sucks! About to take my last nap, after writing a poem on Angels and Wings.

NORTH JERSEY

4PM

Winds still calm, but the drizzle is turning into some kind of freezing rain? The effect is shocking. Every now and then some crazy driver passes you by with no remorse or regret feelings. The sky is deeply darken by the effect of this Storm. Is funny but, one or three young girls take out their dogs for a walk. Seems that Long Island is going to get "hit head on".

An important point to notice here is that people will be people afterwards. The nasty driver will go nowhere and those girls will get home to get cover. It's really sad how society will never change, even with all these technologies at your own fingertips.

4.30 PM

Now... winds are getting a little stronger. So far this is becoming a heavy rain storm. Not that we don't trust our Forecasters, but Places like Home Depot, Walmart and Lowe's had made some money in the last 36 hours.

WOW! 7.26 PM

A sudden change...

Our company closed early and we were sent home before 7pm. At this very second the intensity has change to a higher level. Winds are joining this unstoppable rain. Felt like someone sprinkled water on my second floor bedroom. Traffic on the turnpike was closed for good. According to the news, 5 lives were taken as Irene landed on North Carolina. Humans live shouldn't be taken so easily. Mayor Chris Christie offered shelters to some old residents from the Coastal area around Atlantic city... but most of them refused. FEMA is briefing the President and 7,500 national guards are on call for any mayor event...

7.33 PM

CATEGORY 1, SPEED 85 MPH, MOVING AT 12 MPH NNE

LOCATION: 35 MILES S.E. FROM NORKFOLK VIRGINIA

9.51 PM SATURDAY

seems that the ravaging winds stopped their action against my second floor bedroom windows...on an off raining, but not as bad as two hours ago. We are 40 miles south From Manhattan.

11.05 PM

SATURDAY....

Don't want to look scared but....the wind started to increase..like a whipping sound on the window....this is getting a little creepy... feels know like someone is making that sound..like trying to scare the S### out of you.....definitely is getting like... these forecasters did announce.

By Now Irene is nearing Baltimore, Maryland, that is 49 miles south east from our location.... My mind is trying to cope with this experience....for the first time the light flickered like it was gonna give up...

I look outside...in the dark I see the trees, exactly like in 'YouTube'....feeling the inclemency from Irene external's tail. There is a self imposed curfew...No car is allowed to move around since 7PM. This is like that scene from the 10 commandments..where the 'plague' comes for their victims, besides the Pharaoh's son...

IRENE IS CAUSING DESTRUCTION, DEATH. NEW YORK CITY IS A GHOST TOWN

SO FAR WILL BECOME A TROPICAL TORMENT WHEN IT REACHES HALIFAX

AND NOVA SCOTIA TOMORROW AFTERNOON, BUT FLOODING WILL OCCUR

12.32 A.M.

For the grace of God, so far it was just a strong storm, but wondering how people going east really made it through Holding steady, winds and rain on and off as 5 hours ago. The Electric power wanted to go off for three times but held strong as myself.... time to rest....or no?

SUNDAY

AUGUST 28

1.56 AM

Woke up to see how things were going..! Just read a comment from HAPPYNURSEBOOMER and was flattered by her comments: The storm is almost gone...! Just average winds and drizzles. Seems that Irene kept her course NNE( NORTH TO NORTH EAST). Back to rest and finally sleep trusting back 'mother nature'. Amen!

MY PRAYERS FOR ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AND MY LIFE IS CHANGING WITH TESTS!

HOLD IT!!

GUSTY WINDS SHOWING UP...TREES ABOUT TO FALL. MY...

My second floor window is about to be sucked out for the vacuuming sensation created by the strong semi-tornado that was pretty close to this corner of our house. A distant lightning from northeast...probably Staten Island, got me out of bed and keep on writing more. Is 3.26 am. Nature definitely don't know colors and financial distress. Where in the world is Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman!( the 2011 version please!)

SUNDAY 4PM

Finishing a hub about a dish, I look outside and see the sun and all back to normalcy. According to the News, certain areas in New York got flooded, but in a few hours New England will receive a weakened Irene. Was a nice ride of a lifetime!!

SUNDAY 11.45PM

FEMA STOOD UP IN BETTER SHAPE THAN IN 2005, LESSON LEARNED!

PEOPLE GOT MORE INTERESTED IN THIS PHENOMENON

GLOBLALIZATION IS HERE TO STAY, THANKS TO TWITTER, FACEBOOK AND NOW, US!

ONE THING IS FOR SURE, NATURE HAS ITS OWN RULES AND WE DID TRY TO

HURT HER FOR SO LONG.

SENDING SPACECRAFTS TO ACTUALLY IMPROVE PREVENTION WILL SAVE LOTS OF MONEY TO THE U.S.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT OR STOP THESE HURRICANES FROM GETTING STRONGER?

I live in Southern DE but chose to leave rather than ride out the storm. Am praying for every state affected by Irene. This hub is fascinating to read. Hope you can and do stay indoors until the brunt of the storm passes.

Lord - Happy to see Irene didn't rear her ugly head and cause too much damage at all. My family lives in MD, so I need to check up with them. Voted up and awesome.

Kitty thanks!,

Was MY POEM about this little angel related to your dream as a flying angel?

Baltimore and shoreline areas are fine. God BLESS!

What a fantastic hub! You have to be tired from staying up for so long, but I would be exhausted too! Tornado winds scare me to death! Thank God it wasn't worse. The person in the youtube video was brave, I would have stayed inside and prayed. Music is upbeat thought but probably because his heart was racing. lolololo :) Rated it up and shared. :)

Amazing hub. And to think I was scared a few nights ago because we had an intense thunderstorm in Ontario...1,000s of strikes an hour... and wind. I don't know how I'd make it through a hurricane...

Uninvited writer,

I really feel sorry for the kids...so far 600,000 families don't have electricity. And at this very minute 2000 flights were cancelled, that means lots of families are stranded either in DC. NEWARK or NEW YORK. Thanks for stopping by

LORD.

I can't believe you had electricity through all this! Our power company goes out first thing! I remember good ole Irene....

We just had a close call with Issac as you know. Oh, the joys of living in S. Fl. but New York???? Unbelievable.

Great Hub, Lord. I voted it UP, etc.
