BRICS and SCO

BRICS and SCO

As the BRICS meeting is going on in New Delhi with heads of government from India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa debating about various aspects including starting of a BRICS bank in future, Russia and China are determined to deny India a seat in the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization). The Prime Ministers of Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan debated during the previous SCO meeting about the expansion of SCO but no fruitful decision was taken to admit India into the organization. India and Pakistan are interested in gaining full membership into the SCO. Afghanistan is interested in making entry into SCO as an observer.

China Does Not Want India’s Membership in SCO

It is rumoured that China has serious objections to admitting India into the SCO but does not object to Pakistan’s entry. Russia on the other hand does not mind both India and Pakistan entering SCO. India has nothing to gain by entering into the SCO. Russia and China are coming closer now than ever before with the sole idea of challenging the US’ might in the world. They also want to change the unipolar world where USA is the undisputed superpower. Russia and China have settled their border differences and are cooperating with each other in many vital areas including defence. Russia and China take the same stand in many international issues which is diametrically opposite to the stand taken by USA.

China’s Strength Will Not Benefit India

India stands to benefit nothing if China and Russia gain strength militarily and economically. China has already attacked India in 1962 and captured 32000 square km of Indian Territory. It is staking claim to more Indian Territory like Arunachal Pradesh. China wants to attack India at an opportune time and capture Arunachal Pradesh and its adjacent areas. In case of such an attack materialising, it is the USA that could come to India’ support and not Russia. In 1962 Indo Chinese war, Russia took the stand that India was its friend but China its brother. It was the USA that came to the support of India and saved India from falling into the hands of China.

India Stands To Gain Nothing by Joining SCO

USA May Find It Useful To Operate In Afghanistan through NDN

Therefore there is little point in joining an organization like SCO dominated by China and Russia. Of course Pakistan stands benefitted by gaining entry into SCO as its all-weather friend China is ready to help it with more nuclear bombs and weapons which will be used against India. The SCO was founded in Shanghai in 2001. India joined the regional organization as an observer in the year 2005. SCO is useful to USA in one important matter. NATO supplies to Afghanistan are disrupted by the Talibans in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many American and NATO soldiers are getting killed everyday in the theatre of operation. Under the circumstances, the USA and NATO may find it more secure to supply equipments, ammunition and food to the troops stationed in Afghanistan through the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) which starts from Germany and passes through ten countries into Afghanistan via its northern borders. As most of these countries are members of the SCO, USA may find it easier to coordinate the supply with the help of SCO.

China May Make Afghanistan Its Satellite like North Korea

The NDN may even expand to include China at some future date. NATO and China are already discussing about opening a supply route to Afghanistan through Xingjian province in China. But all these things are no use for India. Whatever is India’s Afghanistan policy, the Muslim countries will not respect India’s opinion. In fact the Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai himself has stated unequivocally that in case of an India Pakistan war, Afghanistan will stand by the side of Pakistan. All the Islamic countries have stood by Pakistan in the previous India-Pakistan wars. Whether peace prevails in Afghanistan or it is destroyed by war, India cannot benefit either way. In fact even USA will lose in the long term if it supplies materials in Afghanistan through Xingjian. This is because China may gain a foothold in Afghanistan and at an opportune time can colonize it like North Korea.

India Should Deal With the Central Asian Countries Bilaterally

Some strategists are arguing that Central Asia has rich minerals and energy resources and that it will be profitable for India to engage these countries through SCO. I agree that the Central Asian countries are important strategically for India but I do not agree that these countries should be engaged only through SCO. India can bilaterally deal with these nations. In fact, bilateral approach may pay richer dividends than a multilateral approach through a regional grouping like the SCO.

Russia and China Totally Dominate the SCO

China is calling for bigger Indian role in the SCO. India should not deceive itself to believing that China is welcoming its entry into the SCO. China had earlier stated that it was welcoming bigger role for India in the UN but it opposed granting India a permanent membership in the UN Security Council. China is adept in playing with words. China’s intentions towards India are quite opposite to what its words convey. China has ill feelings towards India. China cannot digest India’s prosperity. China wants to attack and swallow India. China is unable to even tolerate an independent country India. Therefore India should not fall into the trap and deceive itself. I repeat that India stands to gain nothing by joining the SCO. SCO is different from BRICS in the sense that Russia and China cannot totally dominate the BRICS. But in SCO, what Russia and China say is the law.

Really interesting hub. I was not aware that India was looking in to joining the SCO, and you make a great argument for India not doing so.

Indian-American relations need to improve to counter the growing threat that China poses to the world.
