It is our Earth… we would like to keep it!

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (or commonly known as MIT) Centre for collective intelligence has developed an online forum where citizens create, analyse and select detailed proposals for what to do about climate change.

But like any forum, if it is to work, it needs the input of the people.

It is a place where anyone, anywhere in the world can make a proposal, comment on existing proposals or even suggest a new topic for proposals. It is a place where your voice can be heard.

The site currently has around 4,300 members, a small number in comparison to the population of the world, but each member is at least trying to get involved with the environmental, social and political issues of the world.

After decades of environmental doom and gloom, the ever increasing cost of World leader discussions and the continual rise of CO2 production, the Kyoto protocol has managed to shift whole industries, complete with their CO2 production from the West to East. As a result, the growing commercial shipping industry, currently unregulated and excluded from the Kyoto protocol was estimated to have produced 1,040,000 thousand tonnes of CO2 in 2011.

It has been well documented over the years that a country’s manufacturing capabilities are the biggest and best financial stabiliser. This is even more evident in today’s world as we see China, the biggest manufacture is also the most financially stable and is not suffering in this global economic crisis.

By shipping its manufacturing capabilities overseas the western world enjoys the benefit of cheap products while their governments enjoy reduced CO2 emissions. This shift in manufacturing has only increases the global CO2 emissions while putting a huge strain on the global economy.

Climate change, global warming, rising sea levels, extreme weather; whatever is happening, it is happening on a global scale. It is something the whole world needs to be involved in, and unlike the Kyoto protocol, there can be no exclusions. We all live on the same Earth; we all contribute to the good, bad and indifferent aspects that affect our climate; we all need to take responsibility for our actions.

It is time we all got involved. It is time we all created a global community that will make a difference, not another problem we need to solve in years to come.

Most of us have enjoyed the advancement in technology, the enhancement of our lifestyles. Most of us enjoy the basics of life, clean water, clean air, good food; and the luxuries: transport, homes, TV, telephones, computers etc. Now we have a duty to our children, and our children’s children to ensure that they can enjoy what we have enjoyed.

Join the climate CoLab, voice your opinion, submit your comments, like a proposal even create one.

The more people involved, the stronger the voice, the sooner we find a solution and longer we all can enjoy our world.
