Who Is Jodi Arias

It was after a interview with local Fox TV affiliate station that Arias was placed on suicide watch. She told the local TV station that she would much rather have the death penalty than life in prison. She said that death was much preferable to life in prison. In the next few days the jury will be making a decision as to whether Arias will get the death penalty or life in prison.

She had told other people and friends over the last year or so that she had no desire to set out the rest of her life in prison. But even if she was to receive the death penalty from the jury death will not come quickly. Many people set on death row for 15 to 20 years or longer after being sentenced to death.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said that the guilty verdict closes the case on the state versus Arias but that the search for justice for Travis Alexander will go on. The jury will be the one that has to decide the fate of Arias. They will be weighing out the factors of the case and deciding if the crime was cruel enough to be eligible for the death penalty. The jury can if it so chooses sentence Arias to life in prison. We will have to wait and see what happens.

Arias really over killed Alexander but at her trial her and her attorney tried to claim self defense but the jury didn't buy it. During her trial Arias told the packed courtroom and the jury that Alexander was a cruel and controlling person and she was in fear for her life. She claimed that on the day of the murder that they had been photographing each other and that at one point when Alexander had the camera that he dropped the camera and attacked her. She claimed she had no other choice but to defend herself.

Martinez Claimed Arias Was Manipulative

Martinez over and over again asked the jury not to allow Arias to manipulate them into believing her lies. He told them that the woman had scammed Alexander and please don't let her scam you the members of the jury. Arias had earlier that day testified on the stand that Alexander had cursed her and told her he was going to kill her and then lunged at her. She cried tearfully as she told the jury that she did not remember stabbing Alexander. She made the claim again and again that she had blacked out that day.

The Crime

Travis Alexander was killed on June 4th 2008 at his home in Mesa Arizona. His murder and the resulting trial of Jodi Arias has created wide spread media attention. Alexander's ex girlfriend Jodi Arias was charged and tried for his murder and she was found guilty on May 8th, 2013. During her trial Arias made the claim again and again that she killed Alexander in self defense. He had received multiple stab wounds and he was shot in the head.

Back Ground On Jodi Arias

Jodi Arias was born on July 9th 1980. She was born in Salinas California. She met Alexander in September of 2006 at a pre paid legal conference in Las Vegas Nevada. She later converted to the Mormon faith which was the religion of Alexander and she was baptized into the Mormon Faith on November 26th 2006. Its interesting at how fast she converted to the Mormon Faith. Almost everyone they knew said they were a couple by February of 2007 and often talked in front of family and friends that they were going to get married soon. But it wasn't to be. The couple officially broke up on June 29th 2007. Arias moved to Mesa Arizona until sometime in April of 2008 when she moved to her Grandparents home in Yreka California. People who knew her said that as time went by she seemed to become obsessed with Alexander and what he was doing. They said that she did not threaten him but seemed like a infatuated school girl.

Back Ground On Travis Alexander

Travis Victor Alexander was born on July 28th 1977 in Riverside California. At the time of his fathers death he and his siblings were taken in by their paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Preston Alexander Sarvey and it was the grandmother that introduced Travis and his siblings to the Mormon Faith. His Grandmother Sarvey passed away in 2012.

Alexander was a motivational speaker and he was a salesman for the Internet Marketing Company, Pre Paid Legal Services.

it was at his home where the deceased body of Alexander was found in the shower. His throat had been cut, he had been stabbed multiple times and he had been shot in the head. The local sheriff at the time said that it was clearly over kill and possibly a crime of passion.

The Police Investigation And What They Discovered

At the time of his murder Alexander had planned a trip to Cancun Mexico. People also involved with Pre Paid Legal were not able to get in touch with Alexander and Alexander had missed an important conference call on the night of June 4th , 2008. People who worked at Pre Paid Legal with Alexander went to his home but were told by his room mates that he was out of town. They knew better and the room mates found a key that was to Alexanders Master Bedroom Suite. They entered the suite and Alexanders body was discovered in the shower.
They called 911 and also told the authorities that a former girl friend who was Arias had been stalking him and had in fact slashed the tires a few days before on Alexanders car. When authorities arrived they discovered huge pools of blood in the hallway inside the suite and Alexander was indeed dead in the shower in his bathroom.

It was later discovered by police detectives that even after Alexander was dead that Arias had continued to call the cell phone of Alexander and left several messages. Possibly attempting to build an alibi. She told police that the couple had made up over the phone and that Alexander had planned to visit her in May of 2008 but that because of his busy work schedule that his plans had changed.

There was a reported break in at the home of Arias' grandparents in early May 2008 and one of the items taken was a 25 caliber pistol. A spent 25 caliber round was discovered near one of the sinks in the master bedroom suite. Alexander's badly damaged digital camera was located inside a washing machine downstairs in the house. Although the images had been deleted Mesa Arizona police were able to restore the photos and they were of Arias and Alexander in compromising intimate positions. There was a last picture taken of Alexander alive and well in the shower at 5.29 P.M. on June 4th 2008.

A series of bloody hand prints were found in the shower and the DNA test done on the samples said it was a mixture of blood from Arias and Alexander. However Arias continued to make the claim that the last time she had seen Alexander was in April of 2008. Even when detective Esteban Flores confronted her with what the police knew she stuck to her story.

More Information About Jodi Arias

People who saw Jodi Arias in Utah shortly after the murder happened said that her hands were bandaged. She also wore long sleeves even though the weather at the time was very hot. Arias told friends she had been injured while working at her waitress job at Margaritaville. It is interesting to note that after she was arrested it was discovered by investigators that no such restaurant existed in the area and that Arias had never worked there. It is now known that at the time of the murder she worked at a restaurant in Yreka California called Casa Ramos.

Arias would tell police one story after another only to have to go back and change her story again. And the media didn't help. There was almost a circus atmosphere in the courtroom and in the area. One jury member was dismissed early in the case for misconduct and another was later dismissed after he was stopped and charged with drunk driving. Several times the police asked the judge for a mistrial but the judge refused and the trial continued. It is now believed that the Arias trial was one of the most expensive murder trials ever in the state of Arizona.

On July 8th 2008 a grand jury indicted Arias for first degree murder. On July 15th 2008 she was arrested at the home of her grandparents in Yreka California. It was not until September 5th 2008 that she was extradited to Arizona where she entered a plea of, Not Guilty.

Initially Arias gave three different stories about her whereabouts at the time of the murder. Originally she told police that she had not been at the home of Alexander at the time of the murder. Then she said that yes she had been at the home of Alexander and that two intruders broke in demanding money from Alexander and that they killed Alexander and attacked her. Then she changed her story yet again and claimed that what happened at the home of Alexander had been the result of domestic violence and that she had killed Alexander in self defense.

This was the story that she continued to tell during the trial and at times while she told the story she broke down and cried several times on the witness stand. The trial against Arias began on January 2, 2013 in Maricopa County Courthouse in front of judge Sherry K Stevens. From the start district attorney Juan Martinez sought the death penalty.

Arias was appointed two defense attorneys. They were Jennifer Wilmott and L. Kirk Nurmi. They presented the theory that domestic violence had indeed been the problem and that Arias had killed Alexander in self defense. 1.4 million dollars was spent on the defense for Arias.

It was not until May 3 2013 that closing arguments took place and the trial was sent to the jury. On May 8th , 2013 the jury returned a verdict of guilty of first degree murder. In the next few days, quite possibly the next few weeks the jury will decide if Arias gets life in prison or the death penalty. If she receives the death penalty she will join other women on Arizona's death row at Arizona State Prison Complex Perryville at Goodyear Arizona. Since the death penalty was resumed in 1976 34 individuals in Arizona have been executed. The method of execution is lethal injection.

Arias Guilty Of First Degree Murder. Will She Get The Death Penalty?

Jodi Arias was found guilty of first degree murder. The jury must decide either for life in prison or the death penalty. Arias wants death and is now on suicide watch.

More Information About Jodi Arias

In January 2013 artwork by Jodi Arias began to appear on E Bay. It has been reported that the art work was put on sale by the brother of Arias and that the art work was being sold to help pay the travel expenses of the family of Jodi Arias. Some of the money was also used to purchase better food for Arias to eat while she was in jail.

Arias made the claim many times in media interviews that no jury is going to ever convict me. I am innocent she said and claimed she believed in the justice system and said that she was not guilty. No jury will ever convict me she said. But the jury did convict her and may well sentence her to death. Many people were surprised that the jury took as long as it did. Just before it brought back the verdict guilty of first degree murder some people had speculated that the jury might be hung and there would be a mistrial. But it was not to be.

Domestic Violence is a real problem in America. But it is known that Arias lied about many details of her story and that she changed her story many times. But does she deserve the death penalty. What do you think? Post your comments below and let us all know what you think.

Thomas....Based upon the sheer hundreds of hours I spent, watching this trial, day after day, taking copious notes, reading anything and everything I could get my hands on, as well as doing in-depth research into both Travis & Jodi, their backgrounds, education, family and friends......I could easily refer to myself as an "expert" on this trial. But I don't and I wouldn't.

The individual hasn't been born yet who could possibly determine the truth...separate the fiction from the blatant lies, or delve deeply enough into the complex psyches of these 2 unfortunate people.

We know that Jodi is and had been for many years, mentally and emotionally unstable, a pathological liar and clearly displayed characteristics of Borderline Personality disorder. We know she obsessed over and stalked Travis, used her body to her benefit and was an accomplished manipulator.

She killed him....OVER kill....fully and not-so-carefully pre-meditated, left him in a pool of his own blood and went on her merry way to see another man with seduction on her mind, once again......we know she lied repeatedly, changed her story, attempted to portray Travis as someone he was not, never was and could never have been....an abuser. Positive LIES and nonsense, even a moron could see right through.

We know she was tried before a jury of her peers.....both the defense and Prosecution presented their best case and the trial was fair and complete.

She was found guilty...as well she should have been, if there is even an ounce of sanity left in this world.

Not only because I am anti-Capital Punishment.....but more because I firmly believe that Life w/o the possibility of Parole is the most horrendous sentence she could suffer.....This is what I sincerely hope her sentence will be.

For someone as narcissistic as Jodi Arias, solitary confinement, lack of socialization, a life void of attention and her beauty products, and all that might feed her ego......is FAR worse than simply allowing her to go peacefully to sleep.

She has earned a LIFE behind bars. She deserves nothing less for the egregious, evil and vicious , pre-meditated slaughter of a young and vibrant life.

I would implore anyone who even considers believing her filthy lies and feeble attempt to dehumanize Travis.....please take the time to research all the details and use the intelligence and common sense you were born with. This case truly IS so very very cut and dry....UP+++

Thank you Thomas for your hub.

Jodi Arias was not abused. She was not abused by her parents and she was not abused by Travis Alexander. She told 3 different stories about how Travis was murdered.

Domestic violence involves control over another. Usually people who are in a relationship and isolated from their family and friends. Typically the person being abused has no financial means to leave the abuser and there are children involved. The abused is completely dependent upon the abuser.

Jodi was not dependent upon Travis. Jodi frequently stalked Travis, she hacked into his emails and Facebook accounts. She would sneak his cell phone to check for text messages and incoming/outgoing calls to see who he was talking to.

If anyone was abused, it was Travis. The last straw was when she did something so unforgivable(what that was, we will never know since she will not tell us and Travis is dead) that he cut her off completely. She then set about, methodically and premediated to kill Travis.

The abuse/domestic violence/self defense excuse was just made up by Jodi's defense attorneys. They have now switched to Jodi is mental and are asking for her to be sent to a mental institution.

Jodi's domestic violence defense made a joke out of real victims of abuse!

Very good point Shyron. I work with this very issue almost daily and it would really surprise some people at who the men abusing women are. Preachers, Police Chiefs, etc. All men who people would have never thought of doing something like this.

If a man is abusing a woman, do you think he is going to advertise it. I think not. I know someone who was abusive and none of his family or friends knew, and probably still do not know.

It is amazing people claim to have watched this trial and think "maybe" Jodi killed Travis. Um....yea she admitted to killing him but claimed it was self defense. The misinformation out there and the claiming as truth things that were never, ever proven in court is just sad. Travis is murdered all over again by those stating fiction as fact.

I watched the entire trial, read everything I could get my hands on and belong to several FB pages who discuss and support the Alexander family. There was not one shred of evidence by the defense to prove domestic abuse. Real domestic abuse is about control and power over another. Typically in marriages or long term live in situations where one side of the relationship is dependent on the other for financial support. Usually there are children involved and ability to leave is blocked or very difficult. Jodi was neither. In fact she many times placed herself at Travis' without his consent.

No other girlfriends of Travis claimed he was abusive.

Jodi has severe personality disorder and psychopathy. Her own parents claimed when interviewed by Det. Flores that she has "problems" many of Jodi's friends reached out to her parents asking them to get her help. They did nothing.

Jodi premeditated this murder based on the evidence:

-rented a car 90 miles away from her home in Yreka. Insisted on a white car as it is less attention getting. Removed the license plates once she entered Arizona to avoid any security cameras on the freeway capturing her car.

-Bought the gas cans so she could have gas and not be tracked as buying gas in the State of Arizona. Who does that??? Very dangerous.

-Her route to Arizona was way off. She took a complicated round about way to avoid detection.

-Changed her hair color along the way to Travis'

-Gun stolen 1 week before Travis' murder from her grandparents. Same caliber of gun used on Travis

-Lies, lies and more lies. Jodi told 3 different stories. IF Travis abused her and attacked her why wasn't self-defense her first story instead of ninjias??

Who records telephone conversations and why? Usually for ulterior motives. Jodi's own brother recently responded to a tweet as to why Jodi recorded this alleged "phone sex" . He said it was so Jodi could play it for any potential new love interests of Travis.

I have the police report. Very telling information in there.

Jodi was guilty. She was not a domestic violence victim. She coldly and brutally murdered Travis.

Life in prison would be agonizing for her. I hope she gets it. 23 hours in isolation, 3 hours a week outside in a wire cage, shower 3 times a week and a lot of long, lonely hours to reflect.

Shyron I think that Jodi may have been telling the truth. I don't find it far fetched at all that Alexander may have indeed attacked her. The over kill is what makes me think this. What if he was beating and abusing this woman on a regular basis. If so it's a sad situation indeed.

I have watched the trial from the beginning to the verdict and even recorded some of it. I think Jodi was telling the truth, when she said she was taking pictures and dropped the camera and that when Travis came out of the shower and lunged at her, he grabbed the knife from the sink, where he laid it after cutting the rope. Travis as he knocked Jodi to the floor he dropped the knife and Jodi grabbed it as he had her around the waist (her mid section) and to get him off her, in her panic she was stabbing him over his shoulder and he let go long enough for her to get free.

Had they found the gun and found out that it was her grandfather's, it would have been over long ago.

even so I think she should have gotten 2nd degree or manslaughter.

Interesting hub.

John I agree with you 100 percent. I know a case in Florida where a preacher was killed by his wife and everyone in the community made the man out to be a saint. In the end it was finally revealed that the man who had been the preacher was one of the cruelest men alive. He beat the wife who killed him almost every day in places where the beatings wouldn't show. Maybe just maybe domestic violence was involved in the Arias case. Some prosecutors even hide evidence. I have a real problem with what went on with the jury in this case. There should have been a mistrial. Thanks John for your comment.

CHG you wrote about a tough one here. I've been following this case and something about it just doesn't seem right. While I think she probably did commit the murder I don't think it was first degree murder. If domestic violence was involved then it should have been manslaughter at the most. I also have a real problem with the judge and the dismissed jurors in this case. I don't see it holding up on appeal if Jodi can get a good lawyer.
