Boehner Bails on Debt Ceiling Talks

Barack Obama called all Congressional Leaders up to the White House to provide a plan for lifting the debt ceiling. John Boehner a republican from Ohio defiantly flexed his political muscles and refused to show up today. This is an extraordinary measure as the majority of the Congress has flagrantly disregarded the president’s orders. As colorful as Ohio politicians have been in the past, many have gone to jail specifically Trafficka; Boehner is taking a significant chance with both his re-election bid and his party by failing to minimally attend a meeting at the request of the POTUS.

We all know that the debt Ceiling will be raised. This is not a real argument but posturing for the next election cycle. I can't blame Boehner arguing against taxes for Ohio. Ohio has one of the highest tax rates in the USA. But he is a US Senator and as such he is required to deal with national priorities on behalf of his constituents. What is more apparent is this inevitable scare tactic placed upon the citizens of this country. Why would Congress be so irresponsible?

Republicans, especially the Tea Party Movement, have been screaming at the top of their lungs for debt reduction. This bill specifically addresses those concerns so why are they fighting a bill which they have lobbied for? Is this just more political theater in what is becomes an incredulous government already?

I would like Boehner to justify the 325 million dollars in raises Congress has received this past year and then talk about being a fiscal conservative? Boehner took his raise as well. And it is at the cost of taxpayers and social programs including education (No Child Left Behind was written by Boehner's camp). Before any social program are cut in the United States the Congress needs to take a pay cut especially when the majority leader can't be troubled to show up to a meeting called by the President.

You or I don't show up when the boss asks us to and we get fired. John Boehner doesn't think he is compelled to fulfill the duties of his office. Perhaps it is time John Boehner resigns.

For all of you on the extreme left or right of this argument, I know you will not approve. It always amazes me how the Tea Party Movement and the extreme liberal Democrats always attack me. It would seem the liberal Democrats and the Tea Party Movement are the same people. Save your attacks you have bigger problems to worry about. The majority leader of Congress just failed to do his job when he was getting exactly what he had requested which was debt reduction.

If I were Obama I would raise taxes specifically on Congress because Boehner wasn't compliant. It is scary to think that the guy third highest up in DC will not show up to a meeting called by the President. It speaks to the dysfunction of DC and specifically to the critical need to replace John Boehner in Ohio. If he can't work with Democrats then perhaps it is time he retires. Again, I don't blame Boehner for his concerns about tax increases in his state but I do blame him for not working with the President especially since he holds a key leadership position. Today Boehner failed the people of Ohio and the People of the United States as well as his commander and chief.

Boehner's Failure

Do you think John Boehner has failed his constituents and his country by not attending the debt ceiling talks with Obama?

Time to Throw the Bums Out!!

After this stunt today I can think of no better time then now to throw all of these bums out. No matter Republican or Democrat they need thier pink slips. Anyone who received a raise in the last year during this so called fiscal crisis and didn't get the debt ceiling raised needs to be retired from politics. Keep track and number all of their days. That includes but this not limited to Michelle Bachmann.

It is cruel and unusual for government to act so irresponsible in handling the affairs of the country they are sworen to serve.

Do you think ALL of Congress should be thrown out because they took a 5% raise without raising the debt ceiling?

Do you think Congress should be thrown out because they took a 5% rasie while failing to deal with the debt ceiling crisis?

JT, you are so right. Their only sticking point is to not allow the wealthiest corporations and individuals nto pay taxes! What? Obama agreed to cut even more than they asked for but they refused because of the fact that he also wanted to raise the share of the wealthiest to pay taxes. Their euphamism for rich people is "job makers", what a crock. Boehner is a curse on Ohio just like their Governor and needs to be vored out immediately. His arrogance and posturing needs to be addressed as well as the rest of the folks in DC who are doing this to the country. Good HUB and keep up the pressure.

Hi Peter always great to hear from you.

He could also be expelled or atleast censured. I bet he didn't consider that when he decided not to show up today. He not only places himself in danger but he gives people like me the opportunity to ask him and the rest of Congress why they have consumed an approximate 325 million dollar raise without being able to care for the people they represent or minimally met the requirements of their job. Who gets a raise tht can't do their job besides Congress?

Can we get the 325 million dollar rasie back from Congress?

Thanks JT

The three branches of government are suppose to be equal and the president has no right or authority to be ordering other branches around. He has publically scolded the Supreme Court and individuals of Congress as well as the body itself. He played hardball with the healthcare. It is time someone stood up to him. He is not a dictator he is president. He nor his party has submitted a budget in over 2 years. They are shirking their duty and blaming the other party. He (the president), his administration and their party are the height of hyprocisy.

JT, The debt seems to be an important issue to Republicans, and it is all they say that matters. The truth is defunding the POTUS's ideas and administration is a big part of their plan to make sure the POTUS fails. Their only hope to win in 2012 is, the failure of this President. They have no other ideas or plan and they are leaderless.

Jt Walters 5 years ago

First Thank you for submitting your opinion. And, no, not during a war. The government doesn't have three eqaul powers during war at all. The President retains all the powers while we are still at war and we are in both Afgnistan and Iraq. Now until those troops come home and peace is declared then the President retains all his war time powers just like Bush did.

It isn't a partisan issue. It is all of government failing. No isn't a platform for electing anyone. Boehner has a responsibility as majority leader and third in line to work with whomever is put infront of him.

What president from either party doesn't play hard ball. And my Mother received telephone calls from those republican Death panels while she was terminal with Cancer so please don't lecture me about any politican playing hard ball. That is the only game they know and they play it against you and I.

War has to end to end war time powers and I doubt either party is interested in that because the nature of being in power is to be an absolutionist and they all are.

Thanks for your comment. I appreciate and value your opinion. BTW, don't you think Congress hsould refund their 325 million dollar raise while we are in n economic crisis?

Hi Junko,

Always good to hear from you. Cngress can't defund POTUS as he retains war time powers. He will just pass a supplemental like George Bush did throughout the war. The Budgets during the Bush administration were nothing compared to the supplementals that were passed. They were hum dingers. Now the republicans might out Obama for passng war funding through supplementals btu if they do they risk have George Bush's supplementals coming to light and that would inhibit JEB's ability to run. Saddly, for the time being, especially those Republicans in office now, need to shut up and wear beige. They are getting their fair share of medicine back from the Democrats. Everything George pulled is fair game for Obama to pull. George lowered the bar so low in American polituics that Obama may be successful just by trying to work with Republicans. Because the vast majority of Americans know he can get funding through supplemental bills in war time through war time powers.

You know how much George Bush spent on his presidential library? 100 million dollars at Southern Methodist University and he didn't make that much during his administration so you have to wonder where that money came from?

Thanks for commenting. The majority of the country want and expect DC to work.

Hi JT, First of all, one of the first places that should be addressed is the fact that there should be NO raises for any politicians until the economy is back in order. As for the tax issue for the rich, the rich already get all sorts of tax breaks and write off's. The middle class and poor don't have tose benefits. My two cents worth. Greg

Hi Greg,

I love your two cents!! Actually the rich pay what is known as tax penalties. That is if they spend more of thier money than that is alotted such as more than their interest on their money, then they pay what is known as tax penalties. The rich don't pay taxes but penalties.

I agreed no more raises until the economy is back in order. I am just wondering why Congress couldn't figure out that a shared ordeal has to be really shared by all and they took the raise this year of 5%. It is about 325 million dollars!!!

Thanks for reading, commenting and posting.

All My Best,

Hi JT, The reason congress hasn't seen that that would help is it is their pockets they are talking about. But they don't seem to mind trying to take the money away from the people, like myself, that are on Social Security. And the sad part to that is, that money is ours to begin with with. They want to take the money that we were FORCED to put into savings for our retirement, and now that is the money that is SUPPOSED to save this country? Two more pennies. Greg

JT Walters profile image

JT Walters 5 years ago from Florida Author

Two more great pennies. I remind sme of that story about Nazi Germany and how everyone was okay with the death camps until they came for them. It is so true Congress wabts every bit of money for themselves and they don't want to pay for anything or share the burden of suffering with the rest of the country.

Too bad Congress doesn't have to worry about paying the rent or putting food on the table. Until they have to worry about making ends meat they will never be able to represent anyone but their own interets.

Boehner is back in talks but I am not confident that taxes will be raised and they absolutely need to be raised now. Our country needs the revenues. Corporate America is sitting on such a flush of cash reserves and not hiring anyone that is legally capable of working. It is time for the ultimate communism of this country, if one of us suffers we all should share that burden.

You should run for Congress you have lots of sense!!

JT,

I think you're missing the dynamic here. Both sides are submitting proposals they know the opposite side won't accept, because neither side wants anything to happen. Neither spending cuts or tax increases are popular, so both sides are like deer staring into headlights. They have to make proposals for appearances sake, so each side can say they made an offer, and the other side refused it.

The core problem is that no side can mutually agree on any step, even a first step, that materially cuts spending AND broadens the tax base. And we can't solve the debt crisis unless we do both. So the GOP proposes spending cuts, knowing the Democrats will reject them. And the Democrats propose tax increases, knowing the GOP's will reject them. It's a game, and in the end, we all lose, because no solution is forthcoming.

And that is why all the Bums and I mean all of the current members of Congress should lose their seats. They have no right playing games on the tax payers dime. It is their job, not to play partisan poltics, but to find solutions to problems for this nation. Anything short of that is complete failure of their jobs and they should be terminated as in fired and I mean every last one of them.

Hi JT, My whole point in this thing is, why are they even threatening Social Security payouts? That isn't Obama's money, or any other branch of the government's for that matter,to use for anything but Social Security payouts. We the people have paid our money into SS, and we were actually forced to do it,so that we would have some money when we retire. Now they want to stop paying us OUR OWN money to fix THEIR screwups. Sorry, but that's BS. That's my input, worth much more than 2 cents this time. They need to get their heads out of their butts and dig into their own pockets, not the people that really need the money. Greg

Hi Greg,

I couldn't agree more with you that Congress should not take away our Social Security money that we paid into because we were forced and we were guaranteed to have social security benefits. I can't believe Congress did this especially while they are giving themselves a raise. Where is the shared sacrifice in that?

The United States of America will be inbreach of contract with every last person that has paid into Social Security if they take those funds away. They are already in breech of contract for all the Medicaid services and Medicaire services.

And again I will submit the entire cocngress needs to be shipped home. Washinigton needs to desperately be cleaned out and new fresh blood with fresh ideas need to be put into place.

I have been known to hang out in Cleveland and it is amazing how small Cleveland really is. Boehner and Obama know each other and substantively agree on many issues. If anything Obama is more Republican than he is Demcrat. I think this is political posturing but I realize the fear it strikes into the hearts of people who rely on their social security which isn't enough to begin with. It is really cruel to do to the weak and improverished of this country and for this sin I reccomend Congress be fired!!!

I think your Social Security will be safe for this year and atleast for next month. It is an election year after all. I have paid into my social security for over 20 years as I started work when I was 13. I will never see a dime fo my social security and the government doesn't want to retrain or higher me for another job so I am burned as well.

This was like the stem cell debate that Congress had openly when people were dying of Cancer and rare diseases. People who desperately needed stem cell therapy and Congress just dropped the debate and it was politically disasterous.

This is the same politically disasterous self destructive move Congress made but with the Debt Ceiling now. Personally, after it is over, I am going to write to my friends in China and see if they can float me a loan since I felt a responsibility towards making certain the debt ceiling matter was resolved while Congress couldn't get a grip.

What is for certain is that JEB is running probably with Romney and that this has turned into a full blown election year in which nothing will get down.

Two points...

1) Boehner and his team spoke specifically to doing the minimal on the Debt Ceiling in order to fulfill his and his parties obligation to their offices which sounded very much like he wanted to keep his jobs.

2) They blamed the president for not putting a bill forward. Now is it me or does Congress write the bills? I mean if Obama hd made it an executive order which he offered to do in negoitations wouldn't they have attacked him for that? It is Congresses responsibility to write the bills not the executive branches? Why doesn't John Boehner know that and why does he think he can blame the presidency for his own laziness?

A good comment, and one I agree with. I think there are a little under ten people currently in Congress who genuinely are willing to do the right thing, but they have so few votes at present they have no real power.

Have you heard about the Debt Reduction Committees that are going to be appointted because the issue has become to politically toxic to deal with during this election cycle. The government in its infinte wisdon has decided to appoint a debt reduction committee to reduce debt. Apparently in America you have to spend more money in order to save money. I have already stated I want this job especially since Congress can't do it when they are paid to do it.

And I want to work for a % of debt reduction. I wrote a hub about it. You didn't comment Stu. I was a little surprised normally I hear from you. This is just the kind of DC excess that is maddening to you.

JT

Stu From VT 5 years ago

JT,

No "debt reduction committee" will ever solve anything. What is sadly going to happen is that Congress will be too scared to implement fiscal reform, and will monetize. Say goodbye to the value of the dollar, our ability to import anything, and the worth of any long term fixed income debt securities you own.

Stu,

If I am on the committee it will.

A little history lesson. In 1999 military intelligence was encourage if not plain out told to get out of the military and go into provate security firms the as such the birth of CACI and Blackwater were formed. These private security guards are pulling in 150 k per year and that was at the beginning they are making far more than that now. Who do you think they are guarding. Well they have been foudn guilty of war crimes in the middle east but their primary function is to guard government officials like Michelle Bachmann. Actually they have been guarding all of Congress for the last decade and have made billions of dollars doing so and you know who is going to get stuck with the check for guarding Congress? You Stu and anyone who has any money.

See I believe this was a huge mistake. I have always thought Congress should live with the consequences of their behavior so they were less likely to committ crimes like they have in the last decade. But they have had a private security team which has cost billions of dollars. Now if military intelligence had stayed in the military it would have only cost us a fraction of what has been spent to protect Congress and so I believ all those yellow bellied Congressmen and women should pay their owbn private security detail bills. That is one of the perks I have been referring to when I have mentioned Congress has given itself a raise and it has perks.

The first cost saving item I would cut would be the budget for the private security firms that have been protecting Congress from thier karma. And I would require all of Congress, because God knows they have the money, to pay thier entire security detail bill plus interest.

Yes, they will monetize with Junk Bonds as they have been doing for quite a while now. I just wouldn't own junk bonds. Gold is looking better all the time.

It is time Congress pay the bills for their big spending ways. It is not like the people would have ever agreed to pay for private security details for Congress. It is a well kept secret. I would pull Blackwater and Caci as well as other mecrenary security frims out of the State Department and out of DOD. That is how they are paid is through DOD so I would cut them as well. There are no better soldiers than US military soldiers and the USA has had no business hiring mercenaries and sticking The People with the bills.

The Frog Prince block this response froom his post so I will not post anymore comments on his site any longer. But you asked the question and I thought you deserved the answer. First thing to get cut is Congresses fay bonuses and their priavte security and then I would charge then for all back security services that have been paid by DOD which utilized mercenary firms like Blackwater and CACI. I would also fine the heck out of Haliburton for bad services in IRAQ.

Michelle Bachmann appreciated private security during her term in the Congress and so she is not immune from this gluttonous guilt and lack of fiscal conservation.

The perks in DC and the raises would be gone. Yes, I would be formidible on a debt reduction committee.

I apreciate your enthusiams for this country and I agree with you on many things I just don't think you understand how crooked politicans are. And that is a compliment.

Stu From VT 5 years ago

JT,

I completely agree that Congress overspends on itself, and this should be corrected. It's just that we have bigger fish to fry first. Capping federal operating spending as a percentage of GNP (at about 15%, down from the current 25%), bolstering the tax base (replacing the FIT with a 20% VAT), vacating federal violations of enumerated powers (defunding illegal agencies like BATFE, the DOE, HHS, the Education Dept., the FCC, the Commerce Dept., etc.), reducing federal compensation to private sector equivalents, and phasing out all federal entitlements (no enumerated power, and too costly to pay for long term), are the "big hitters."

To be honest, if Congress does all of the above, they'll have earned their largesse. The steps above would REALLY solve the crisis - we could pay off the official national debt (over a few decades), and abrogate (rip up) most of the off balance sheet debt.

We need to attack the fat, low hanging fruit first. We don't have the time to waste debating for years about Congressional pay and fringes. We can deal with that later. We are not looking for billions, we are looking for trillions. We need to focus on the big picture, and nail the "heavy hitters" with tough laws that FORCE the feds to run operating surpluses and pay down the official debt, and FORCE the feds to eliminate most of the entitlement liabilities (so the associated treasury "assets" backing them can be burned).

Stu,

VAT taxes would make it impossible for the majority of the country to eat...INFLATIONARY DEPRESSION!!! You want to Department fo education to go? Who do you think makes our soldeirs battle ready? Do you actually believe that militray training occurs in boot camp or wel before that in schools? HHS is out? What about infectous disease control? And you are suggesting getting rid of the inteligence agencies all 18 of them?

Billion is a place to start and Congress is the fattest lowest hanging fruit there is in this country. And it is trillions of dollars whe you consider Congress hs a priavte security firm guarding them. We could not guard Congress which is my favorite or we could regular military which is alos an option for pennies on the dollar.

The most money spent in this country is on DC and on tax breaks for the wealthy. Take those two things away and the balance sheet will be cleared up.

As for FOIA it has never exsted anyhow. There are all kind f injustice that occur each and everyday in this country and the only shocking thing is that anyoe still believes there is any justice at all in this world.

The biggest liability to this country and its wealth is the Congress that psent all of tbhis money to begin with. If you don't throw Congress out and get all new people in office then you will just have them lying, cheating and pulling the same stuff all over again. Congress is the problem and to continue to feed them is a mistake. They are a cancer to this country.
