Love: Running With The Baton

Love

Our comprehension of the word ‘love’ is only relevant to our experience of emotions and feelings we have assigned to the category LOVE in our pattern of thoughts. Therefore we are not always able to understand why others are able to love a specific person or animal, and therefore we are always amazed when we come to the realization that the feelings of love we are experiencing in a new relationship are different from the feelings we already know.

I remember when I met my first granddaughter minutes after she was born I stood enthralled, astonished by the vastness and majesty of the feelings in me. I had no idea that I had the ability to fall head over heels in love with a new baby just because she happens to carry some of my genes. Today, 4 grandchildren later, I am still amazed, for all four of them arouse and sustain feelings in me that cannot be aroused and sustained by any other creature on earth. I know that only grandmothers will understand what I am trying to explain.

This phenomenon called love is unique in all relationships, whether between human and human or human and animal.

Love is a NOUN – a name we have for an emotion, a person, an animal, a place (called home), or a course of events, such as a happy marriage.

Love is also a VERB – we can give it, receive it, make it, ignore or reject it.

Are people born with an instinctive tendency to love?

When we analyse a baby’s love for their bottle, dummy, favourite blanket, toy, and for their momma, daddy and siblings, we have no choice but to believe that humans – and some animals as well – are born with the instinctive tendency to love. The ability to hate develops later, triggered by unpleasant feelings and emotions caused by external factors.

Stuart Miles @ freedigitalphotos.net
Stuart Miles @ freedigitalphotos.net | Source

Why do we use a heart to symbolize love?

The biological basis of love is the brain, the only organ that instigates the release of chemicals that have the ability to rouse emotions and feelings. (If you are puzzled because I distinguish emotions from feelings, watch the attached video by Dr. Alan Watkins - Being Brilliant Every Single Day (Part 1)

Chemicals such us dopamine, testosterone, estrogen, norepinephrine, serotonin, vasopressin and oxytocin, are being released by the brain when our senses – sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch – are being delighted by an external object. We FEEL the effect of these released chemicals in/with our heart. The warm feeling in our heart forces us to THINK. What is this? What am I feeling?

Besides physical differences, the fact that humans are able to think distinguish them from animals. So, we can honestly not know how intense are the feelings of love animals are experiencing in their life.

Love is still a magical phenomenon to be explored in full by neuroscience.

Before I run with the LOVE baton, I need to confess my utmost admiration for the Greeks and their many words for love -

The Project "Good Words"

Jo_Goldsmith11 launched the Project Good Words a couple of months ago after and unethical attack by the media against former Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney and his family. For the year 2014 Jo has taken a pledge to use good words and publish articles that will empower, encourage, support and defend those who need to be shown love. Her first "Good Word" in this series was Love. Ref: Light2Love

Source: Shyron E Shenko
Source: Shyron E Shenko | Source

Then Shyron E Shenko decided to make a poetic contribution to Jo’s weekly “Good Word”.

The first good word in the “Good Word Project , LOVE, inspired her to write When-a-Seed-of-Love-is-Sown.

Source: Maria Jordan
Source: Maria Jordan | Source

Always ready for a challenge, my SFAM (sista from another mother), Maria Jordan aka marcoujor, decided to make a musical contribution.

The Good Word LOVE inspired her to draw our attention to the love in music and the lyrics of songs. In her hub, Good-Words-Musical-Challenge, she has passed the Baton of Love on to me.

My love for Maria

is a mixture of Philia and Philautia with sufficient pinches of Agápe, Ludus, and Pragma.

  • Although I cannot touch or smell her physically, I can see her via pictures, hear her via written and audio messages and touch her with my mind and heart. I perceive her in a spiritual manner. Our spirits are roaming the Internet and we have more fun than Time and Circumstances will allow us in real life. According to my comprehension of love, our friendship is perfectly Philia.
  • Sometimes I believe Maria is a part of me – the ‘myself’ I used to talk to when I had a need to express my thoughts, the imaginary friend I have sensed in my presence before I met Maria, the journal I used to keep since the age of 12, but no longer need since I've met Maria. So, my love for her is indeed very much Philautia.
  • And, of course, with the right amount of Agápe, Ludus, and Pragma the Bond of Love between us is an indisputable reality. If this invisible bond between us dissolve, and we lose contact, I will most certainly be devastated and lost for a very long time.

Thank you, my Maria, for being there for me 24/7 :)

Martie, you took such a unique, creative approach to the subject of love. Of course, I have to agree with you about Maria. She's loyal, supportive, loving, caring, funny, and always there for her friends. I love her dearly and I do you as well.

This was pure joy to read. I can't seem to get the smile off my face. But then, why would I want to?

I am feeling the love within this hub! I could totally relate the love you feel for your grandchildren. I also, never imagined that type of love...it's different than the love we feel for our own children. It's a love that's eternal...nothing could ever extinguish this type of love.

Love is an elusive word and an elusive concept. There are so many forms of love, but they are all gratifying. I have learned that if love hurts, it's probably not love at all.

Beautiful work, Martie!

Dear Martie,

You certainly ran with the baton of LOVE!!! Just reading this beautiful outpouring of words straight from your loving heart fills my heart with love for all here and beyond.

These are all such inspiring projects here beginning with Jo's Good Words Project, then sweet Shyron's poetic responses to the Good Words Project and now our precious and dear Maria's Good Words Musical Challenge! This world sure can use all the LOVE we can spread around. Speaking of musical inspiration ... "What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love" ... and LOVE is truly sweet.

I knew of four of the words for love, and learned four news ones here.

The love letter using love song titles is so clever and made me smile.

Maria has a heart of love for all, even when she may be hurting herself, she never stops loving. I love her dearly, too. When you wrote that she is there 24/7, I am reminded of ... "A friend loves at all times." Please know that you too, Martie, are loved beyond measure.

I am so excited and cannot wait to see how far and wide the beautiful Good Words Muscial Challenge will take us around the world spreading good words, coupled with Jo's and Shyron's contributions in continuing the spreading of good words.

LOVE to all ...

Voted up ++++ tweeting, pinning, G+ and sharing ... the LOVE

Dear Martie,

I am back to say HI and to report on the magnificent two hour play of 1980s LOVE music you have provided for us. I spent a good part of last evening and am finishing up the last song by U2 as I write this -- a masterpiece collection, each and every song. I intend to come back to this "Time After Time" - perfect background music for when I'm writing / working, oh, I guess most anything...LOL!

The comment stream is beautiful, filled with the love of our community and some people that I can say I love, even though I have never met them. And thanks for your comprehensive essay on this wonderful, and many-faceted, subject of love...

I think your letter is brilliant, clever and well done.

Once again, dear Sista, you have risen to this challenge and then some...will be back to check out the other video. Love you, mar

I love the title you chose, ' Running with the baton. ' We here in Hubville have so much love to share, what a great community. @ marcoujor – I am so glad you enjoyed the video. It is most certainly one of those a romantic soul will never get tired of. One actually needs a specific mindset, or talent, to grasp a letter or poem written with the titles of songs. Some people read the titles without linking one to the other. Thanks, Mar, for the opportunity you have given me to send my thoughts galloping on love. Love you lots!

@ always exploring – my dearest twin, I am thinking of The Sounds Of Music, and I can see all of us in those children, skipping and hopping up and down those green hills. Ruby, I now pass this love baton on to you. Please run with it :)

Hi Martie…

I immediately related to the analogy of the love we feel we first see and “meet” our new grandchild…the love is overpowering and unlike any other love we have felt for anyone else. This is the love I felt and feel for my granddaughter. Every coo she made, every word she know says seizes my heart. Each love is unique. I also agree that love is innate, and hatred is learned. You ran with the baton with a unique creativity that is just inspiring. The description of your loving friendship with Maria and what she means to you brought tears. So beautifully done, Martie! Voted up and way beyond, and sharing. :-)

Beautiful Heart illustration; wonderful people pictures; great music ... the message of service, of giving. You portray this so well.

@ Faith Reaper – Now you have given me a lot to think about. I have read an article about trees communicating with each other; in order to ensure their survival, some trees are able to make their leaves bitter in times of draught – to repel hungry herbivores. We will never know all there is to know in this universe :)

@ PegCole17 – I am forever grateful for the opportunity I have to be a member of HubPages. We learn so much from each other.... and about love.

@ manatita44 – Stories told via dancing are absolutely amazing, but lost on those who don’t understand the language of dancing. Yes, Love is the most powerful human characteristic. Even more powerful than Hope and Faith. (1 Corinthians 13)

Martie -- dear CD (Cyber Daughter) - this is beyond beautiful. I've just come from Genna's hub where I pretty much spent the limitations of my hand on my response there, but I had to trace its origins and here you are! A wonderful tribute to LOVE!

You know, your point that love 'feels' difference toward different people is so true. I find myself, when nightly praying for almost everyone I know and love, each by name, pausing over some and saying out loud, "I really love. . . . (that person)" because even to think of the person's name sends a wave of like-first-love through my being. One realizes what a gift it is to feel love. It's not something one can order up, ever; - it descends on one's heart and soul so unmistakably, it just can't be ignored or denied. It's a divine gift, is what it feels like. Ah!!

One can feel good feelings toward people and know it as love, but that specific, intense feeling of . . . what? Just raw, real emotion toward someone . . . is beyond description. We may wish it were 'there' for everyone we love, but it has to just BE, in order to - be.

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser 2 years ago from South Africa Author

@ Nell, love is an amazing topic to ponder and discuss, as if it has no beginning or end. My love for my online friends, including you, is precious, and I absolutely detest people who try to make a mockery of it. I can but only feel sorry for those who have no idea how real and precious are bonds established between online friends - even more real and precious than many bonds in real life... Take care, dear Nell :)

MartieCoetser profile image

Oh, my dear Nellieanna, that feeling of love when we think of a specific person, so totally unique, spiced with all kinds of Good memories and sometimes even with less pleasant memories - that feeling is so warm it simply melts the ice that keep our tears inside.

When I think of you I want to cry, feeling sorry for myself because I only have the privilege to know you online while I would have loved to have you right by my side.

I hope with all my heart your hand will heal completely rather sooner than later, although I do believe the merest stress will trigger that carpal thing again. You are such an example to all of us with your responsible ways of tackling all adversaries.

Love you lots, my dearest CM :) And thank you so much for taking the time to read our hubs, and especially Genna's, and to leave such delightful and precious comments.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 2 years ago from TEXAS

Again, I've just now explained my most recent progress with the CTS on Genna's comments, so won't repeat that here. But I am encouraged, both by her experience with having it and having it go away and some new techniques I'm into.

Sometimes I remember my loved ones who're no longer here and wish I'd always appreciated and treated them better when they were near! That's less pleasant of course, but then I think of how it simply WAS, in spite of human frailties, and I can scarsely believe how wonderful it was. Tears of joy come freely then.

You're so kind. I don't see myself as a shining example for others but, while (as you may know) I'm not much on trying to 'fix' others, I confess to being doggedly determined when it comes to adversities within my scope to face and conquer, which nearly always lead me back to facing stuff I need to improve and my own careless choices which led up to or contributed to whatever it is. So I have to get to work!

Yes, I find myself wishing for more actual interaction with my beloved online favorites, too. But I suppose we are so lucky to have the ability to hop across thousands of miles and lots of red-tape to visit together, we shouldn't be too greedy. Maybe one of these days we can plan a get-together at which several of us can actually meet. Wouldn't that be a treat?

I love you too, my dear. Hugs!

My dearest, Nellieanna, I have no idea how I almost missed this comment of yours. So sorry you had to wait 7 days for my reply. Just by being you, you are a role model par excellence. I consider myself blessed, having the opportunity to mingle with you and so many other people of quality. Of course, in real life I work and socialise with the most awesome people - I just don't allow low quality people in my personal zone - but Time and Obligations prevent us most of the time to become involved with each other - sharing our deepest thoughts and convictions - like we become involved with our online friends, mostly in the wee hours of the evenings/nights. Life is a rat race!

I hope you feel way better than 7 days ago, my sweet CM :)
