In his book, Outwitting the Devil , Napoleon Hill tackles the challenges of personal despair or fulfillment, failure or success, particularly during times of worldly uncertainty and personal fear.

In a dialogue with the devil, Hill gives a provocative and insightful look at how our day to day choices in life can derail or enrich us.

One of the most common and most perilous choices we can decide to make is to do nothing.

Hill develops the concept of drifting, which he defines as our tendency to procrastinate; it is where we lack a definite purpose, and are not utilizing our God-given abilities to direct our thoughts toward that which we desire and find worthy.

By putting off things, by not taking definitive action, by letting external circumstances determine our course, we end up drifting. Hill explains that “Laziness + Indifference = Procrastination = Drifting.”

Everything in our day to day lives seems designed to keep us drifting. We are bombarded with so much external stimuli that we are too busy reacting to ever stop, reflect and take initiative. We are so busy doing, that we have lost the sacred art of being. Personal volition has been utterly usurped by a kind of seductive, perennial chatter which fills our airwaves and is being orchestrated by external forces decidedly outside our best interests.

The key is not to succumb to drifting, and the hypnotic lull of external forces, but rather to determine what we most want and to pursue it, while being wide awake and aware of the dangers, the costs and the benefits.

Hill states, “Life gives no one immunity against adversity, but life gives to everyone the power of positive thought, which is sufficient to master all circumstances of adversity and convert them into benefits.”

We need to carefully assess and seriously consider our personal situation, our mindset, and our “why.” Determine what we most want and what we are willing to do in order to achieve it.

Then, there is the environment in which we live, including the challenges and opportunities of our global economy. The Federal Reserve, which is not a federal institution, and has no reserves, continues to print massive amounts of paper money, or fiat currency, with nothing backing it. This is being done in plain sight, with absolutely no end in sight. You cannot escape the inevitable, damaging consequences, so you better understand them. Don’t think we have averted that what has merely been postponed.

New York Times Bestselling authors David Wiedemer, Robert A. Wiedemer and Cindy Spitzer make the following statement in their book, Aftershock: Protect Yourself and Profit in the Next Global Financial Meltdown, “But here’s the catch. The only thing worse than the recession that would result from purposely deflating our government debt and dollar bubbles now will be the much, much bigger global depression that will eventually result from pumping them up even further. Deflating these bubbles now would pop our multibubble economy, but continuing to inflate them will eventually cause an even more massive and destructive pop in the future. As it stands, we have chosen a whole lot more pain later.”

The age-old battle being waged is now occurring on all fronts. We are spiritual, physical, and social beings. We must address, strengthen and fortify ourselves on each of these three levels. There has never been a more urgent or opportune time to heighten your awareness, strengthen your spirit, open your heart, or prepare and position yourself and your family.

You’re either asleep or awake; you are either reacting to external forces or living from the inside out and being proactive; you are either part of the problem or are mindfully creating solutions; you are either drifting or intentionally working to define and realize your “why,” your definite chief aim, your life purpose, and your heart’s desire. Think bigger, think bolder, think brighter.

In The Traveler’s Gift Andy Andrews writes, “Most people fail at whatever they attempt because of an undecided heart. Should I? Should I not? Go forward? Go back? Success requires the emotional balance of a committed heart. When confronted with a challenge, the committed heart will search for a solution. The undecided heart searches for an escape.”

We have the ability to prevail; but only if we awaken to the imminent perils and the possibilities. Make no mistake, the battle is in full swing and we are engaged whether we enlisted or not. Decide for yourself or it will be decided for you.Take your first, informed step, and then another.
