Mirror Mirror On The Wall...

As I shaved this morning I saw the reflection of a man I no longer know. I saw a man that has grown old and weak. I saw the shell of a man once proud and strong. A beaten old man willing to "go along to get along". And I thought to myself; mirror mirror on the wall...

I watched in utter amazement as President Bush pretended to chastise the people of China for human rights abuse. Does the President of the United States ever look in the mirror? Does he daily practice his chant: mirror mirror on the wall...

When and if he does look in the mirror does the Vice President really answer him: you are Mr. President, you are ...

When was the last time that we as a nation looked into that magical mirror? What did we see? Was the reflection of a proud nation following the guiding light of our forefathers?

OR, was the refection corrupt? Did we see the great leaders of this nation mislead the public and the world? Did we see the great leaders of this nation, time and time again, fall short of the moral ethics we as a nation expect of our leaders; mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most corrupt of them all? You are Mr. President, you are.

I now recall that not so long ago we as a nation did look into the mirror and decided to change the image reflected in that mirror of reality. The citizens spoke with a thunderous roar and handed the mirror to Ms. Pelosi. Once elected Ms. Pelosi looked into the mirror and asked; mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful and corrupt of them all? And the mirror spoke thus: President Bush is the most powerful and corrupt!

So Ms. Pelosi and all those that would follow her decided to change the reflection. But the reflection refused to change. Once more the citizens looked into the mirror and what they saw they decided to accept.

They saw a nation that is tired and worn thin from corruption. A nation that is no longer willing to accept the role of world moral leadership. A nation that is old and weak because its leaders are old and weak. A nation that is unwilling to put forth the effort it takes to create and grow a free and moral nation.

As the nation looked into the mirror, it asked: mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful and corrupt of them all? And the mirror answered: You are Mr. Citizen, you are.

It is said that one must either lead, follow or get out of the way. If we no longer lead, and we refuse to follow, the someone will come along soon enough to shove us off the track.

While we may arguanly still be one of the most militarily powerful nations on Earth, we are weak internally, and specifically for the reasons you state in this hub.

We have seen the enemy and he is us.

Spoken like a true American Chef Jeff.

Yes, we need a huge change in leadership although I am not sure either one of the present candidates is willing to bring about that change. I have come to see the United States as a one party system. The candidates speak different words but after all is said and done the meaning is the same. It is just another beauty contest.

There appears to be a group of elite wealthy that live in the shadows, never showing their faces, while making the decisions that affect our daily lives. On the one hand I cannot believe that the republican grass roots movement would pick someone like McCain to represent them. On the other hand I fail to see how a first term Senator single handedly built a nationwide grass roots organization in such a short time.

I also believe that the powers that be are toying with us and using the presidential election to deflect attention from the real issue. Real change can only be had by getting rid of all the incumbents in congress. Real change can only be had by rendering what the lobbyists have purchased useless.

I am an accountant, it is my job to effect change as a means of protecting large companies from internal losses. Chain stores move store managers from location to location quite often. This minimizes the possibility of any two employees working in concert to defraud the company. The same should be true for our congress. Term limits limit the usefulness of any favors purchased by lobbyists from our congressmen.

The job of representing the people was not ever supposed to be a “career”. Once a person serves six to ten years in congress they become self-righteous and begin to think they own the district they are supposed to represent.

Term limits is not something that has to be passed into a law. It is something that is in the hands of the people. We as voters have the power to limit terms.

Enough said. I gotta go and look in the mirror

When I was a kid I used to have to go to Sunday School.  As an adult I am seeing the value of learning about all those old prophets warning about this and that.  The people back then also shouted them down and made fun of them.

Sounds a bit like us as a nation, doesn't it?  Anyone says anything against the image we hold of ourselves and we scream they must be traitors and un-American!

Thanks for the hub and I hope you'll take time from examining the mirror from time to time to let me know what you see in there!  I see my cat staring at me and wondering what I am looking at!
