Chandy’s trap for Jayalalithaa

Kerala Chief Minister Chandy has set a trap for the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to fall. Chandy has offered a ‘joint control’ of the new dam to be built in place of the existing Mullaperiyar dam. Even before the ink dried, Chandy changed his stand and stated that what he was referring to as ‘joint control’ was in fact a ‘joint control’ of water release only and not the dam. After some more days, Chandy may say that what he meant by ‘joint control’ of water release was water to be released to Kerala and not to Tamil Nadu. It is all word jugglery. If one is skilful in it, one can play it for any number of times on any occasion at any point of time and at any place. Chandy is very adept in it.

Twisting the meaning

Chandy may even twist the meaning of ‘joint control’ later. Chandy may say that a ten members committee will be in charge of release of water from the new dam and out of the ten members, nine will be from Kerala and one will be from Tamil Nadu. The word ‘joint control’ does not mean fifty fifty ratio. Chandy can appoint a hundred members committee and have ninety nine of them from Kerala and gracefully offer the remaining one to Tamil Nadu.

Karunanidhi would have pleased Chandy

But Chandy should know that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is not a fool. She has enough intelligence to understand this word jugglery of Chandy and reject it at the outright. Had Karunanidhi been the Chief Minister, it would have been different. Karunanidhi sees everything from the caste and religious angle. If Chandy says something, Karunanidhi might have either accepted it or at least not opposed it vigorously because Karunanidhi will see Chandy as a Christian first and not as a Kerala Chief Minister. In order not to antagonise the religious minorities, Karunanidhi would not rub Chandy on the wrong side as Christians will get angry otherwise. But to Chandy’s misfortune, Karunanidhi is not the Chief Minister and Jayalalithaa is unlikely to fall into this ‘joint control’ trap.
