OBSERVATIONS OF THE OVAL OFFICE SPEECH

INTRODUCTION

Last night President Barrack Obama addressed the nation on the Gulf oil spill disaster. He made it clear that BP was going to pay for all damage inflicted by this spill and offered a way forward for America in his view.

EVALUATION OF THE SPEECH

The evaluations below are a consensus of those voiced last night after the speech.

  1. We cannot afford another massive tax increase.
  2. We cannot afford to pay over $5.00 per gallon for gasoline.
  3. We cannot afford to have electric rates skyrocket.
  4. The President was offensive in using this tragedy to advance his political agenda. It’s Rahm Emanuel’s mantra, ”Never let a crisis go to waste”.
  5. Where are the specifics on the source of alternative energy we are seeking to replace fossil fuels?
  6. We can’t afford the massive loss of jobs imposed by the stopping of drilling for over six months. These drilling rigs will go elsewhere and be unavailable for years. This will only increase our dependence on foreign oil.

These opinions were expressed by Steve Scalese R. Louisiana, Mary Landrieu D. Louisiana, James Carville Democratic strategist, David Vitter R. Louisiana Senator, Haley Barbour, R. Governor of Mississippi, and a host of others on CNN and Fox News.

REACTION TO THE SPEECH

This was a great opportunity for President Obama to finally show leadership. Sadly he missed the mark once again. This speech was purely an attempt to further his political agenda of Cap and Tax. This is the first time in my memory I saw condemnation on Fox News and CNN at the same time over President Obama’s speech. All of Hannity’s guests were unanimous in their condemnation, which was expected, but the condemnation I saw on Larry King Live was like a breath of fresh air. James Carville, Senator Mary Landrieu, and other prominent Democrats were also unanimous in their condemnation. They were outraged at president Obama using the tragedy that befell them in the Gulf to further his political agenda.

It’s not often we see such agreement on a speech both Republicans and Democrats rejecting the President of The United States. Of course when I checked Rachel Maddow she was discussing a completely different subject, the senatorial race in Nevada.

CONCLUSION

We are at a time in the history of The United states of America where we can’t afford to be led by a rank amateur. We need true leadership not political posturing. I was hopeful to hear real solutions last night but instead I got the same demagoguery. Mr. President it’s time to let go of your agenda and lead this country back to that “Shining City on a Hill”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom, Excellent article on that poor excuse for a speech. It was pathetic and you gave a great summary.

Pamela,

I was so disappointed. I had hoped he would forego his agenda and show true leadership for once.

Tom, say it like it is. I've decided to do my part in finding alternative energy, I'm installing a wind turbine on top of my car. I thought I was watching Saturday Nite live instead of a presidential speech.

Tom Whitworth profile image

jib,

The problem with any alternative energy is that there has been no study on the effects. Wind mills will take wind energy out and the downstream effects are unknown. Once the energy is gone it's lost downstream. What will that effect be? Nobody knows.

This president is an empty suit with no clue!!!!!!!

Harvey Stelman 6 years ago

I hope people can see this man is NO genius. He just wants what he wants and won't listen to anything.

Isn't it nice he visited and saw for himself. That had no effect on his thinking.

Good job Tom!

He cares about nothing except his ideology!!!

Thank you for your insightful comment.

Truthfully I don't think the president has a clue. I can't help but wonder though if he has delayed action in order to further his agenda and demonize oil.

dahoglund,

I think you've hit the nail right on the head!!!!!!

It's not about solving the problem it all about his agenda!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting to hear about reactions of CNN talking heads. Personally, I think he could go to live there for a month and still do what he's doing because all that matters to him is his political agenda, not the people, any people.

I doubt that those poor people in the Gulf could stand him for more than one day at a time. It's cruel and unusual punishment!!!!!!!

I think the most sad part of all, based on some callers to Hannity's radio show this afternoon, is that the brainless obumma supporters CONTINUE to support this inept and feeble leader.

Tom Whitworth profile image

Sheri,

I didn't hear that. I know Tingly Leg Matthews was pissed last night.

Some idiots are hopeless.

Tom...right on the money and straight to the heart as you normally are on these subjects. He is in a rush to get as much legislation passed as possible before November when, hopefully, the voters can once again "deadlock" the government in taking further actions. Neither Obama or Congress is pursuing the "will of the people" with this agenda they are following and people are rapidly beginning to see that. The blame for this oil spill starts at home when we, as voters, allow environmental thugs to push drilling outside our waters then write such legislation that prevents effect cleanup and relief when anything does occur. There is a practical approach to everything, it's called "common sense" and we as Americans need a lot more of it right now. Thanks for a very good article! WB

On your conclusion Tom, fat chance. As Dick Morris pointed out a couple of days ago on the O'Reilly Factor, President Obama has never been a manager, and therefore he has no idea how to manage people or things or situations. By the time he figures out what he has to do, it'll be too late.

I fear you are correct in your assessment of this situation. It's looks like we're lost!!!!! Oh woe!!!!!!!!!!!

Guess I am going to have to get one of those Razor scooters to get to work now. Oh by the way Tom MSNBC actually had Maddow and Chris ( I am tinkling in my Pants ) Matthews giving him some criticism too. Maybe but I doubt it , they are discovering what we all know.

THE EMPORER HAS NO CLOTHES !!!

I must have missed Tingy Leg Matthews by the time I tuned to MSNBC. I heard about it later.

To the best of my recollection it was during the Reagan Administration 1981 through 1989. Thank you for your comment.
