Some Things Take Time

With over fifty campaign promises kept President Obama continues to try to get all of them met. Of course, this is not entirely up to him. As president he cannot make law; he can only enforce it. But President Obama continues to pressure congress to work toward his stated goals.

A Long List Indeed.

Unlike the President Obama Successes hub, I will only list the titles of the promises that are still in the works. After all there are one hundred thirty three of them.

  • Increase the capital gains and dividends taxes for higher-income taxpayers

  • Eliminate all oil and gas tax loopholes

  • Extend child tax credits and marriage-penalty fixes

  • Require economic justification for tax changes

  • Make permanent the Research & Development tax credit

  • Require automatic enrollment in 401(k) plans

  • Require automatic enrollment in IRA plans

  • Create a retirement savings tax credit for low incomes

  • Change standards for determining broadband access

  • Create a consumer-friendly credit card rating system

  • Create a $60 billion bank to fund roads and bridges

  • Extend the Bush tax cuts for lower incomes

  • Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher incomes

  • Phase out exemptions and deductions for higher earners

  • Freeze the 2009 estate tax law

  • Tax carried interest as ordinary income

  • Sign the Employee Free Choice Act, making it easier for workers to unionize

  • Provide easy-to-understand comparisons of the Medicare prescription drug plans

  • Require large employers to contribute to a national health plan

  • Require children to have health insurance coverage

  • Expand eligibility for Medicaid

  • Invest in electronic health information systems

  • Phase in requirements for health information technology

  • Establish an independent health institute to provide accurate and objective information

  • Prevent drug companies from blocking generic drugs

  • Work with schools to create more healthful environments for children

  • Improve recruitment of public health workers

  • Double federal funding for cancer research

  • Fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

  • Reduce the threshold for the Family and Medical Leave Act from companies with 50 employees to companies with 25 employees

  • Provide a $1.5 billion fund to help states launch programs for paid family and medical leave

  • Require employers to provide seven paid sick days per year

  • Expand Veterans Centers in rural areas

  • Fully fund the Veterans Administration

  • Expand the Veterans Administration's number of "centers of excellence" in specialty care

  • Reduce the Veterans Benefits Administration claims backlog

  • Institute electronic record-keeping for the Veterans Benefits Administration

  • Launch a supportive services-housing program for veterans to prevent homelessness

  • Expand the Family Medical Leave Act to include leave for domestic violence or sexual assault

  • Begin removing combat brigades from Iraq

  • Launch robust diplomatic effort with Iraq and its neighbors

  • Increase the size of the Army and Marine Corps

  • End the "Stop-Loss" program of forcing troops to stay in service beyond their expected commitments

  • Review weapons programs

  • Set standards for when the government should hire defense contractors

  • End the abuse of supplemental budgets for war

  • Work to end NATO restrictions on forces in Afghanistan

  • Train and equip the Afghan army

  • Double U.S. spending on foreign aid to $50 Billion a year by 2012

  • Establish a Global Education Fund

  • End the use of torture

  • End the use of extreme rendition

  • Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center

  • Strengthen the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) aimed at stopping spread of weapons of mass destruction

  • Seek verifiable reductions in nuclear stockpiles

  • Extend monitoring and verification provisions of the START I Treaty

  • Create a national cyber adviser to coordinate security of electronic infrastructure

  • Develop a comprehensive cyber security and response strategy

  • Increase the size of the foreign service

  • Require Cabinet officials to host Internet town hall meetings

  • Expand the Nurse-Family Partnership to all low-income, first-time mothers

  • Expand Early Head Start and Head Start

  • Simplify the application process for financial aid

  • Reduce subsidies to private student lenders and protect student borrowers

  • Create incentives for tree planting and promote carbon sequestration

  • Improve water quality

  • Restore the Great Lakes

  • Increase funding for organic and sustainable agriculture

  • Expand Pell grants for low-income students

  • Secure the borders

  • Expand the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity

  • Sign the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act into law

  • Eliminate disparity in sentencing for crack and cocaine

  • Push for a college football playoff system

  • Fully fund the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

  • Fully fund the COPS program

  • Sign the Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act

  • Speed up development of the next-generation space vehicle

  • Work with international allies on space station

  • Support human mission to moon by 2020

  • Improve climate change data records

  • Support commercial access to space

  • Revise regulations for export of aerospace technology

  • Encourage contests and programs to interest students in science

  • Strengthen the levees in New Orleans

  • Shake loose federal money for rebuilding the Gulf Coast

  • Rebuild hospitals in New Orleans

  • Improve transportation in New Orleans

  • Encourage community service through online outreach and social networking

  • Expand the YouthBuild program, a youth education and housing program.

  • Expand broadband's reach

  • Double federal funding for basic science research over 10 years

  • Attract more students to science and math

  • Create White House performance team and chief performance officer

  • Create a national declassification center

  • Create new financial regulations

  • Increase protections for whistleblowers

  • Pressure Sudan to end violence in Darfur

  • Sign a "universal" health care bill

  • Create 5 million "green" jobs

  • Reduce dependence on foreign oil

  • Reduce oil consumption by 35 percent by 2030

  • Establish a low carbon fuel standard

  • Require 10 percent renewable energy by 2012

  • Require 25 percent renewable energy by 2025

  • Raise fuel economy standards

  • Create clean coal partnerships

  • Work with UN on climate change

  • Create cap and trade system with interim goals to reduce global warming

  • Require utilities to reduce electricity demand

  • Make buildings more energy efficient

  • Support airline service in small towns

  • Consider "smart growth" in transportation funding

  • Will seek more accommodations of bicycles and pedestrians

  • Help states and localities address sprawl

  • Support network neutrality on the Internet

  • Ensure that stem cell research is conducted ethically and with vigorous oversight

  • Create a public option health plan for a new National Health Insurance Exchange
