Obamacare rollout - The tip of the iceberg.

What is yet to come.

WARNING: If you are one of the 20 plus year old's still living with mommy and daddy, this hub is not for you. You would not understand what is about to be discussed so don't waste your time reading or my time by commenting.

By now, many have suffered through the sticker shock regarding what their new health care plan will cost them. And many former supporters of this failing program now realize they were lied to repeatedly by our President and many of our elected representatives. I am not going to waste your time, or my time, telling you about all the things you already know. So I am going to spend a little time telling you what you don't know or perhaps have forgotten.

Keep in mind that Federal Officials now decide what kind of coverage you will have, and be forced to pay for.

President Obama, Vice President Biden, cabinet members, senior members of Congress, and all of the leadership staff are currently exempt from this law.

A conservative estimate regarding cost is $2.4 trillion in the first decade of this law.

Hidden Taxes:

Remember Pelosi saying we had to vote for this bill before we could find out what was in it? Well, they did vote for this bill and now we are learning what else was hidden in the 2000 plus pages nobody bothered to read.

The Obamacare law includes 19 new taxes we are aware of at this time. The healthcare coverages doesn't begin until 2014, but some of the taxes went into effect in 2013.

Penalties on Individuals: Any individual who cannot prove they have a government approved healthcare plan will pay a fine of $695 or 2.5% of their annual income every year.

Penalties on families: All families who can't prove they have purchased a government approved healthcare plan will pay an annual penalty of $347 per child up to $2,250 per family.

Penalties on employers: Every employer with more than 50 employees are required to purchase government approved health coverage or pay an annual penalty of $2,000 per employee if even one employee receives a tax credit. There was a clause in the bill leaving employers an out if their employees work less than 30 hours per week. Many large employers took this easy-out and immediately made every employee a part-time employee.

Needless to say this loophole in the Obamacare law has financially devastated some families. They were barely making ends meet with husband and wife working a combined 80 hours per week, and now they are working a combined 60 hours per week or less.

I shouldn't have to ask, but what idiot could not see this coming when they wrote it into the bill? Even a child would not have fallen for this trap.

Tax on investment income: The ObamaCare bill now imposes a 3.8% annual tax on investment income for individuals making $200,000 and families making $250,000 or more. They didn't factor inflation into these limits, so each and every year more citizens will fall victim to this new tax.

Tax on "Cadillac" health plans: In 2018, a 40% annual tax will be imposed on health care plans exceeding $10,200 for individuals and $27,500 for families.

Medicare tax increase: Those individuals earning over $200,000 and couples earning over $250,000 will pay an additional 0.9% in Medicare taxes.

Tax on Home Sales: This is a new tax on home sales and real estate transactions that will cost us 3.8% of the selling price. This tax applies even if you sell your existing home one day and buy a new home the next day.

This new tax ought to really get the real estate market moving again. (Sarcasm intended)

Tax on medical aid devices: Another new 2.9 percent tax on medical aid devices. Certain items intended for personal use are exempt, but I have yet to see a list of what is exempt and what is included.

So now when you finally have to buy that wheelchair for grandma, factor in another 2.9% on top of the state and local taxes.

Tax on Tanning: This new tax is 10% and covers services at tanning salons. The business owner will collect this tax from customers and pay it to the feds. This is apparently the first federal sales tax in this country.

Summary:

It would seem this bill was more about raising taxes than a concern over health care. I have no idea how taxing the sale of your home is related to health care. Of course those who don't own a home and never will could care less about this. That also applies to the tax on investments. All of those living paycheck to paycheck have never even thought about investing. For some buying a lottery ticket is their idea of a sound investment.

As you can see from above, these are just some of the surprises that were hidden deeply in the 2,700 page bill that nobody read prior to voting. We don't really know what exactly was in this bill when the voting took place, and what was added under the cover of darkness after the bill was approved. Had any of this been public knowledge prior to this bill being passed I doubt it would have made the cut.

It is estimated that 8 to 9 million citizens will lose their employer-provided health coverage due to these new laws.

ObamaCare will be enforced by the IRS who has the power to confiscate tax refunds, place a lien on your property, and seek jail time if health-related penalties are not paid. To do this required the government to hire 16,500 new employees. We can most likely make the assumption that none of these 16,500 will work for free, so there goes more money being spent on the monster bill.

As one can readily see, the cost of your healthcare going up is only part of the money that will be removed from your pocket or purse.

Perhaps the scariest thing is not knowing what else is hidden in the pages of this bill we still don't know about? My guess is that we have not seen anything but the tip of this iceberg called ObamaCare.

Your comments are welcome and appreciated. Please stay on topic, and that topic is the hidden taxes included in ObamaCare. It has nothing to do with race or color or like or dislike of our President. Low-information types save your time and don't bother to comment.

Do we know what is really in the bill?

I often wonder if anyone has kept track of this bill from the day it was passed until now. Because none of our politicians took the time to read the bill before they voted, I kind of doubt it.

How much new stuff such as taxes has been slipped between the pages of this monster since that vote took place?

I lost my warm fuzzy feeling about ObamaCare a long time ago.

Are you aware of the hidden costs of ObamaCare?

How many are fully aware of the new taxes imposed by ObamaCare?

See results without voting

What about ObamaCare?

By now, even the low-information types must have heard something about the costs of ObamaCare.

I thought the IRS only has the power to confiscate tax refunds. You mean they can also place a lien on your property, and seek jail time if health-related penalties are not paid?

I was laughing so hard at the warning at the beginning of the article that I found it hard to read for a few minutes....then it was hard to read because of the facts portrayed....this whole thing is a mess, a political football that was fumbled from the opening whistle...and now we pay for it. What a shock there, right? NOT!

I have followed this Tax bill and was aware of most of the new taxes you mentioned. I just want to know how a Tax for selling your house has anything whatsoever to do with healthcare? But then you have to consider who is running the government and I won't say another word about THAT.

Voted this up and will share it.

To think that Obama and all those dummycrats schemed and paid off whomever in order to pass this unaffordable health care act, it should be their last hurrah. However, it's even worse that republicans enable them by their weak resistance.

LM - I have no idea how selling your house has anything to do with health care, other than bringing in more revenue to pay for those who really will get free insurance. This is truly about redistribution of wealth and nothing else.

Cassie, great to see you on one of my hubs. This whole thing has been corrupt from the very start to where we are today. Nobody will ever convince me there were no financial kick-backs for awarding the website no-bid contract to the Canadian company. Is it any wonder the cost was this high when so many lined their pockets with gold from this one contract?

Just wanted to add that for the price of the website that didn't work, the advertising Obamacare to rebrand it, everyone in this country should have good health insurance and a new car. And a new car for everyone would have created a lot of jobs with insurance. Truthfully, this administration is the most corrupt I have ever seen.

L.M. - I guess you didn't get the word either. All of these trillions of dollars are to help the small minority who did not have insurance, and is an investment in our future. Why we didn't just give those few million uninsured free insurance and forget it is beyond me.

The answer is that it never was about health care. It is all about government control and it is working.

Hey Mike - you hear about this? December 17, 2013—The Wall Street Journal reported today [pay site] that the Department of Health and Human Services is urging hospitals and pharmaceutical companies not to buy Obamacare benefits (aka “health insurance”) for poor individuals. Why? Because the internal contradictions of Obamacare have created a conflict of interest.

Now that is an interesting development. Sebillius also warned insurance companies that those not willing to sign up customers without being paid immediately may not be able to do business with the exchanges. Talk about a power play. This whole ObamaCare situation just gets worse as the day wears on. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The low information types won't understand a thing until they get an insurance premium they can't afford. Until then, they could care less. This plan is unworkable. About 1.6 million people have registered for Obamacare, but more than 9 out of 10 of them actually signed up for Medicaid. Premiums and additional taxes are going to soar. There will be no other way to pay for this disaster. Thanks for this important and informative hub. Voted up!

Just 15 percent of insured Americans think the health care law will help them personally, but that number rises to 33 percent among the uninsured. Still, more uninsured Americans think the health care law will hurt them (37 percent). Thirty-two percent of insured Americans say it'll hurt them. Overall, 46 percent feel it will have no effect (49 percent of insured Americans, 27 percent of uninsured). http://www.cbsnews.com/news/poll-both-uninsured-in...

Thanks Patti. Like any poorly designed building project it just keeps getting worse as the building gets taller. They forgot that a solid foundation is the most important part and this building may topple very soon.

I can't recall ever seeing a more amateurish effort on such a major undertaking. It is obvious those in charge of this disaster had no idea what they were doing.

But then, perhaps it was intended to fail from the very beginning?

I didn't know about the tax on home sales! That infamous statement by Pelosi has come to haunt us all. Sadly, Americans got to this point by being uniformed, unconcerned or stupid, and it's taken us a long time to get here. Finally here we are and many Americans are still in the dark.

The thing is whenever you point that out to the "uniformed, unconcerned or stupid" they ridicule you as if you are being condescending or elitist when all you are doing is pointing out the the plain and obvious truth which they totally refuse to see...I guess that behavior in and of itself confirms who they are.

One would think our elected representatives would have a handle on this, but I'm not sure it even crossed their minds.

Ever hear what Charles Kesler said about Obamacare?

"... In short, these bills are not so much laws as administrative to-do lists. They are contrivances fit only for the modern liberal state, ambitious to regulate all local and state affairs from the center, which means through a bureaucracy of experts or so-called experts. The result is not a government of laws but of men, ... In fact, it's not so much the length of the Act as its vagueness, incompleteness, and amorphousness that mark it as a new-fangled administrative statute, granting power to a few to rule according to their wisdom and with very little reference to the many's consent. Which is to say, the law's meaning is deliberately indeterminate, left vague so as to give maximum discretion to the unholy trinity of bureaucrats, congressional staffers, and private sector "stakeholders" who will flesh out the Act with hundreds, probably thousands, of pages of regulations, and then amend those as needed later on. When favored interests and constituencies want to appeal a regulatory decision, they will always find a helpful congressman ready to intervene on their behalf with the very bureaucracy he helped create.

This new kind of statute—one hates to call it law—is not meant to be "a settled, standing rule," as John Locke defined law. On the contrary, it is meant permanently to be in flux, always developing and subject to renegotiation. It is law constantly suffused with wisdom, albeit constantly changing wisdom. It is what passes for law under a 'living Constitution.'"

If you want to be informed just read him. http://www.claremont.org/publications/crb/id.1752/...

tsadjatko - Outstanding and informative comment. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

ObamaCare is definitely in flux, but the questions is will they really negotiate changes to the original bill or just do whatever they want? How in the world did all of these new taxes get hidden in this bill and approved? Can you even imagine what this new tax on selling you home will do to the real estate market? Many who had been considering selling their home and upgrading, or down sizing, will just not do it now. If real estate developers are bound by this new tax you can bet it will be factored into the sales price. And then the buyer will pay interest on this tax for the next 20 or 30 years.

A 10% federal tax on tanning salon customers. They got by with this one with little or no protest, what will they tax next? Probably pizza because supposedly it is not good for us.

We have discussed federal sales tax many times, but the intent was to replace the income tax system we have now, not to add it to all the other taxes we pay.

Just wait, this is only the beginning of new taxes that have nothing to do with health care.

Hi OP. Stay away from federal health care. We have the much vaunted National Health Service in Britain. It has become top-heavy and an unworkable mess.

My opinion is the best health care is private care that is affordable! Such as you find in Mexico, etc. Any countries which pay their doctors as much as the president is in trouble as there will never be enough money for them. Be a doctor - it's a calling - but expect a normal, decent wage, like a plumber or any other skilled professional.

Of course it's a pipe dream, but a national system in the USA has no chance of succeeding.

Old Poolman profile image

Bob, I and many others completely agree with you. Unfortunately, to my knowledge no research was done regarding the health care systems in other countries before this plan was written. Our President wanted this to go down in history as his legacy, and by golly it will.

FitnezzJim profile image

To get the answer to the question 'why are house taxes in a health bill?' you need only ask the simple question, "how does having a roof over your head affect your health?" If it helps to keep you healthy, then it needs to be taxed. Remember, even our Supreme Court said the affordable healthcare act is a tax law, not a mandate to buy health insurance.

To understand stupid, you need to put on your stupid hat, think up the stupidest thing possbile, then go with it.

tsadjatko profile image

tsadjatko 2 years ago from maybe (the guy or girl) next door

Bob, it's goal isn't to succeed here in providing affordable health care, never was - like Kesler says it's goal is to be a "living constitution" meant permanently to be in flux, always developing and subject to renegotiation. The left has been trying to sell the idea of a "living constitution" forever so now they have created their own.

The healthcare bureaucrats have been give so much flexibility that it really doesn't even matter what was written in the law because they make it up as they go. The same is true for Obama, he's altered the law with so many executive orders that what's written in it is just a meaningless formality.

In other words Obamacare is really just a writ of arbitrary government power with general suggestions written in the law.

Old Poolman profile image

Now that we are three months into the year, we already see all the problems Obamacare a created. First of all, I lost my good insurance I had for 30 years. They canceled me because of Obamacare. So I was forced to go on the affordable care act website and choose another.

I went through January without an insurance card even though I was supposed to be covered. They couldn't get their act together to complete the registration even though I signed up well in advance.

Then in February I found out that three of my doctors have opted out of Obama care.

Now in March I had selected another insurance through Obamacare which seems to have a few doctors willing to accept. But I have yet to see how well this works.

I'm glad you wrote this hub, Mike. Because some people argue with me that there is no problem with Obamacare. Those are the ones who have insurance through their employer and they haven't discovered the reality yet. But I think it will eventually catch up to them too.

Old Poolman profile image

Old Poolman 2 years ago from Rural Arizona Author

Glenn - Thanks for the comment. As most of us are now aware, this bill is about everything but health care. Many new non-heathcare related taxes were levied as a result of this bill.

It seems now that more people lost their healthcare than uninsured people obtained healthcare. Your also correct that many doctors refuse to accept Obamacare patients. Those who have not felt the sting yet will feel it real soon.

Many are thinking it was designed to fail. This administration would much prefer a single payer system where the government controls everything. When Obamacare goes up in flames the government will be able to bring in the single payer system to save the day.

To get to the single payer system, they had to first destroy the existing system, and they have accomplished that task.

dragonflyfla profile image

Exactly! He is on video saying he wants a single payer and it is believed he only changed it to get it passed. But, people are aware!

Old Poolman profile image

Old Poolman 2 years ago from Rural Arizona Author

I actually believe it will happen and not that long in the future. Think about Insurance Companies having the guarantee the government will pay back any losses they incur with Obamacare. As this plan moves forward, the insurance companies will just be cut out of the picture and the government will control medical care completely.

Obamacare was never about medical care, it has always been about more power by the government and more taxes for we citizens.

dragonflyfla profile image

dragonflyfla 2 years ago from South Florida

I fear you could be right. There is also the possibility that the insurance company have awaken and realize nothing is for free along with the deep poo they have gotten their selves into! Unless he has another empty promise to them.

Old Poolman profile image

Old Poolman 2 years ago from Rural Arizona Author

Actually the insurance companies thought they had a really sweet deal with Obamacare. All they had to do was sell policies at a loss, and the goverment will pay them back any money they lose. That money of course will come from we taxpayers.

They of course will pay this under the table so to speak so that it will not be counted against the huge cost of Obamacare we already know about. The next step will be to just eliminate the insurance companies all together because they will never agree to operate at a loss.

AND THEN THE SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM WILL BE BORN!

dragonflyfla profile image

dragonflyfla 2 years ago from South Florida

Right. Understood. My point is that they will not want to be eliminated. Lots of lobbyist out there.

Old Poolman profile image

No, the insurance companies will not wish to quit mining gold without a big fight. However, I think it is a battle they will lose in the long run. Our government wants a Single Payer System and they will get it sooner or later. Another giant step toward socialism.

It just gets worse every time I turn around. So many people I associate with are realizing that they will be paying more with Obamacare. My neighbor went from paying approximately $700 per month with Aetna to paying just over $1400 per month under Obamacare. They are so devastated right now.

The reason they are paying so much is because the wife needs some expensive medicine that surprise, surprise- Obamacare won't cover. So, they are paying about $700 for the Obamacare and then another $700 for all the things that Obamacare won't cover.

Old Poolman profile image

Old Poolman 2 years ago from Rural Arizona Author

GlendaGoodWitch - Thanks for the great comment. I fear we have only begun to see the negative side of Obamacare for real. And all of this for what? It would have been so much better to just give the uninsured free insurance and leave everyone else alone.

But Harry Reid says none of that is true Glenda. You are just spewing lies. And he is the majority leader of the Senate, he of all people should have the facts, right? Old Poolman profile image

Old Poolman 2 years ago from Rural Arizona Author

tsadjatko - I still hold my original belief in regards to Obamacare. It was designed to fail as a giant leap forward to a single-payer system that is what they wanted in the first place.

We now have millions of uninsured because they just can't afford the new insurance policies. The only ones who really gained are those who now are covered by medicaid, another entitlement paid for by we taxpayers.

Have you seen any numbers reported on how many of those who have signed up are medicaid recipients? I haven't.

I have definitely felt the sticker shock because my health care payments have doubled since the roll out. I know a few Obama supporters who have quietly slipped away from worshipping at his altar since this thing was introduced.

Old Poolman profile image

Mel - First off, it is great to meet you and thanks for stopping by.

I have heard some similar stories from many of my friends. One in particular thought she was covered because she had signed up, and mailed in a check. She needed emergency surgery and was told she had no insurance. She called the insurance carrier and explained that she had signed up on-line and mailed them a check. They asked if they had cashed her check. She didn't know and was in no position to check her bank records. The insurance carrier explained that even if they had her check in their possession, she was not covered until they cashed the check and it cleared the bank.

She is now stuck with a few thousand in medical expenses even though she had followed the rules to the letter.

I suspect a few more worshippers will leave his alter when reality sets in.

I really appreciate your comment.

Old poolman,

Nice hub. I am also disappointed with obamacare. It may have one or two advantages for people under 26 or someone who has cancer who just lost their job. But I think affordable healthcare is a lie. But beleive me health insurance sucked before Obamacare. I am just upset because Obama gave us hope.

I am concerned about Americas future as well. I would never put any kids in this world. The world is too much dog eat dog. If you are not smart and have connections you are screwed in America.

Big Daddy - There is a great deal of this Bill that has nothing at all to do with healthcare, it was more about raising taxes using healthcare as the umbrella.

yecall - I wrote this a long time ago, and to my knowledge everything in it has come true. Your correct, this had little or nothing to do with healthcare but was just a stepping stone to get us to Socialized Medicine they now call the Single Payer System.

I know that in my own case I pay a heck of a lot more for less these days when it comes to healthcare.
