Our Personal Independence Day

Updated on July 4, 2014

Have we become a nation of whiners?

It sure seems as though more people complain than rally behind ideas. But maybe that is just what they want me to hear.

You can declare your independence

Our mass media and political machines like to set up this divide. Well there is not one. We are not black and white but we are gray. We can declare our independence every day. Independence from the status quo has always been the American way. Independence from how they tell us to think has always been the American way. Today independence is no different.

We are told we are either "hawks" or "doves". I call bull on that as I am both a hawk and a dove and do not need to choose. I have the independence to either coo in the brier or soar with eagles. I am not a pidgin to be holed.

I tear with pride over our fighting soldiers and I raise a hand in protest over false conflict. I say "take the battle to them" and I say "it is not our fight". I am not divided, I am free to think what I will. Are you independent?

Funny they have a political party called Independent. Nope not really it is just a way to register to vote meaning that you do not align with any party totally. But it is cool just to think of an "Independent" as something different than the rest of us. Really? Well maybe so.

I can support this sentiment and still support military action to save lives in Somalia or to attack our enemies in some "stan".

I have every right to hate war and ask us to slow down, and yet still support our need to have these great soldiers.

Climate Change

I have a car and drive less than most. I have not driven in 3 days. My cars are re-used. My footprint requires not heating and no air conditioning. It is hot today and cold tomorrow. I do not have a lawn to water my land is drought resistant. I recycle and re-use. And I use less. All my appliances are minimally used and are certified "green" with rebates and all. I grow vegetables that my family eats without fertilizer or pesticides. I buy local for most stuff.

Man caused global warming has merit but not nearly as much as nature. Two massive volcanoes in the world at one time can literally change all climates, man cannot do that. And man cannot stop that. So I do my part but I do not buy into catastrophe theories blamed on man.

I am independent on how I run my home and I choose the best of both worlds and vote accordingly and not against one. I recognize that we are only really saving the planet for ourselves. Get over it. The planet has Ice Ages and Tectonic plate shifting, I am insignificant except for myself and the next generation.

Does having two views make me a bad person? I do not think so. I am independent.

Faith

Believe it or not I am more than capable of having my faith and believing it fully and respecting yours and supporting it and learning from it. I am not so feeble as to fall for anything or to lose faith because something else makes a lot of sense.

I incorporate Eastern and Western and ancient and new and I am just fine thank you. Atheistic and Theistic are both good viewpoints and it is a personal choice. Love to debate things because we learn so much. Whether or not one group goes to heaven of the other does not is not my call so it is fun to discuss as my opinion means only as much as it does to you.

Life is really cool and two people from two totally separate walks of life can join together and help a third from a different walk of life. And guess what? This happens all the time and it is great.

Independence at last

I can look at each and decide for myself.

We really do not need to align ourselves with right or left or blah blah blah. Out West where I was raised we really did not join groups much. We had plenty to do getting by and we would not agree with everything a group would decide so we would not stick with a group. Plain and simple. Even churches would band together because no one was against the other and it just made sense to worship together -- why not?

I am not a round peg or a square hole. I am a human being and I can change my mind, make up my mind and do whatever is that I choose.

So I declare independence from views dictated by our warring factions. I choose to choose what I want and when I want to choose it --- or not! My Independence day really is one and my family will celebrate our right to decide.
