Patriotism in America - Who decides? Watch out! The PC Police may haul you away for speaking soon!
Patriotism in America - Is it still allowed? Who decides?
The word of the day, guys and gals, is patriotic.
I can remember being taught as early back as first grade to be patriotic, though I really didn't understand what that entailed at the time. To me, it was kind of boring songs about America at music time which was more fun than math. It meant the teacher talking about how great America was and me thinking how sad it must be to live somewhere else like that scary place Mom always talked about when I wouldn't eat my veggies. You know where that was. It was that place where all the little children were starving.
I really wanted to help them, but learned fast I didn’t know how. You see my suggestion of sending the dreaded broccoli to them in the mail met with less than pleasing results. In fact, the results were reddening to say the least. I had a problem with sarcasm cloaking my pearls of wisdom from the start. I never really mastered the avoidance of it. Now, my sarcasm is in favor less and less. I fear it will get me in trouble more and more for what was once patriotic is now considered to be exactly opposite of what it used to be.
It used to be considered patriotic to fly the American flag. Now, some are upset because it is offensive to people from other countries. Never mind that they are here, in America, now. It used to be that serving America through the armed forces was a noble and patriotic deed. Now, our returning soldiers face one of the highest levels of unemployment upon return of all groups identified. It used to be considered patriotic to show symbolic patriotism through flags and such at school. Now, teens are sent home and suspended for wearing a tee shirt with the American flag on it. It used to be patriotic to say the Pledge in school. Now, some schools forbid it as it might offend someone.
Danger! Someone might be offended.
Someone is offended. I am! I am offended at the lack of respect for patriotism in our nation. I am offended by the nanny state mentality that is turning our youth into helpless, mindless, drones. I am offended that our American leaders are no longer proud of being American!
This Hub will Endeavour to do the following…
- Define patriotic and its familial words.
- Critically examine how these terms have evolved over time.
- Critically examine the current trend in the evolution of said terms specifically through policy and what is being said by our nations leaders at the current time.
- Examine what this is doing to our freedom and our nation.
How did this happen?
When did it happen? It seems like I went to sleep one night and when I woke up word meanings had turned upside down. Things are changing mighty fast these days.
I like to start these Hubs with a definition and this definition hit on one of my pet peeves.
Dictionary.com defines patriotic as…
“1. of, like, suitable for, or characteristic of a patriot.
2. expressing or inspired by patriotism: a patriotic ode.”
You don’t define a word with another variation on the word itself! Even the darn dictionaries are becoming victims of the dumbing down of America! I'm not even an English teacher and this drives me nuts. Jeez.
OK, it appears as if we must side track and examine the root of the word, if we desire a true definition.
Here we go again.
Dictionary.com defines a patriot as the following…
“1. a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.
2. a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.
3. ( initial capital letter ) Military . a U.S. Army antiaircraft missile with a range of 37 miles (60 km) and a 200-pound (90 kg) warhead, launched from a tracked vehicle with radar and computer guidance and fire control.”
From the Greek
Pater - Father
Patrios - Of one's fathers
Patris - Fatherland
Things start to get interesting.
If we really look at definitions one and two above, we see contradiction. In the first the concentration is on country. Yes, technically it’s about a person, but not just any person, but rather one who defends the nation. When we look at the second definition, this one is about defending against the government of the nation. The government runs the nation. Do you not see how these two definitions seem at odds? Now, were we to assume that the government ran the nation in such a way as was best for the people of the nation, according to the Bill of Rights in our Constitution, we would have no need for the second definition at all.
Did the definition start off that way, with contradictions?
I have to think not.
According to Ask.com answers, Wikipedia, and Wiki-answers, the term patriot can be traced back a very long way. The English version of the word goes back to the sixth century in England. Prior to that it has roots in the Greek language. Interestingly, the older definitions only concentrate on the first definition presented above, one of “… supporting a country.” That implies the later second definition shows how the word has evolved or at least how it started evolving.
We all know many left the old world for the new over laws they felt limited freedom. This nation was built on the idea of all people being inherently free. We further all know that at its inception, and for much of our history, America has left out the “all” part and concentrated on white males. Thankfully, that too has evolved and now includes all races, genders, religions and so forth.
But, I digress.
The topic here is the evolution of the word patriotic and its familial words of patriot, patriotism and so forth.
In a free nation, how can any form of speech be considered unpatriotic? How can things that take away freedom not be contrary to the very principles said nation was founded upon? Is that to say that freedom is limitless, or that it comes without responsibility? No. Of course, freedom of speech does and should have limits. For example, we all know it is irresponsible to yell fire in a crowd when there is no fire. So, firstly, we must conclude that freedom of speech comes with the responsibility to tell the truth. By extension, it must be patriotic in a free society to speak truthfully about the government, any policies issued from it, and persons representing it. For that matter, if we are to live in a free society we must be free to speak about anyone or anything or said freedom is only a farce.

Stop for a minute and think how many public figures over the last four years have been in trouble for what is considered politically incorrect speech. I’m sure you can think of at least a few. The most recent to come to my mind is Pat Buchanan. This man has been a major player in American politics for decades. He is a conservative. He has “parted” ways with MSNBC, at their initiation, over a controversy that was deemed so politically incorrect that now groups are clamoring for him to never have access to the public via a microphone again.
"Shouldn't be part of the national dialog."
Note, in the video the president of MSNBC, who last I checked was not an elected leader of our nation, stated publicly that what Mr. Buchanan had to say, "shouldn't be part of the national dialog." Just who is he to say such a thing? Did you elect him to decide what you are allowed to hear and what you are not? Do you trust him to do such? Funny, I always thought you had the right to decide for yourself. If I find something on the TV racist, I turn off the TV. It's pretty simple folks. The nanny nation mentality is now censoring what we hear on top of what we read. We must be truly stupid to not be able to tell for ourselves what is harmful.
All together class...
Thank you, Nanny State.
I can't think for myself.
Thank you, Nanny State for keeping
me safe from thoughts and ideas.
Peek from behind lids squinting in fear...
What exactly did he, Pat Buchanan, do? Oh, my gosh! It must have been something horrible for such sanction. Was it?
He entitled one chapter, “The End of White America” in his book Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025. HM. OK, I see it now. Such a title could lead to the downfall of all civility, everything holy, apple pie and so on. It's not as if any other author in history has used a dramatic title to get someone's attention. I’m sure you detect the dripping sarcasm. Please!
This is a prime example of how politically correct speech is used as a tool to shut down voices of dissension. In this case, the specifically offensive speech was not even designed to offend, not even spoken. In fact, what Mr. Buchanan was referring to was simple numbers and projected racial demographics, not a race war or slur on any race as could be seen plainly by anyone who bothered to read it. When Bill Clinton predicted the same thing using census data to a crowd years ago he got a standing ovation. But then, he's more liberal so it's OK.
Run! It's a lynch mob.
The group that specifically was the lynch mob for Mr. Buchanan is named “The Color of Change”. They stated that his words were…
“Extremist ideas are incredibly harmful to millions of LBGT people around the world.”
How exactly? Since when is having a different opinion dangerous? For that matter, how exactly are his ideas extremist? Is it because they come from a Christian man? Is it because he does not approve? Is his lack of approval really that threatening? If so, then by extension of that logic anything any of us think or say that doesn't match up exactly with this group, or what MSNBC's president thinks will not be allowed. How does that make you feel?
Is differing opinions not part of what makes us each unique? How boring our world would be if everyone thought the same about everything. You see, dear reader, the problem is not that his opinion is different from the mainstream, it’s that it’s different and in opposition to the group in power, at the moment. Further irony includes the not small fact that the title people are acting so enraged about was only the thing the PC police could catch him with. What they are really in arms about is his conservatism.
Is that to say he has never said anything indicating his disapproval of certain behaviors such as those relating to sexual preference? No. It is not. It is to say the man has the right to his opinion. He never tried to hurt them. He never tried to change them. They sure are going after him in a hurtful way.
How long before it's your turn?
Today it’s Mr. Buchanan under the firing squad. Today certain groups are in favor. We all know things change. Tomorrow those groups could just as quickly be out of favor. If we allow this politically correct ideology to be used as a weapon of control, as a means of stopping free speech, it won’t be long before its constant hunger encompasses everyone and can be used at will to target anyone at any time.
It's OK to call the other side demons
VP calls Tea Party terrorist
Hm? Let's see. Buchanan and others get canned but the VP just gets to deny. Never mind that the witnesses were from his own party. People in the in crowd, the left, who have said such just get told it's bad. Funny how only one side gets punished, the other gets a talking too... and not a strong one! Is that equality?
What's good for the goose is NOT good for the gander.
Ironic is it not, that while the title of his chapter was so offensive as to be dangerous to the survival of our nation, the following liberal leader calling republicans “demons” is not offensive under the PC umbrella in any way. Hm?
Maxine Waters has come out publicly and called republicans demons. Mind you this is applied to specific people not data, not projections of what numbers will do, but to conservatives and republicans. She further says Republicans are blocking jobs. Funny, I thought it was the democrats that nixed Keystone.
She states, “Don’t ever again in life let me see those republicans in our halls… talking about anything.” Our halls, as in public government halls, meaning our for her side only. Talk about intolerant. Is not the politically correct ideology that allowed for Pat to be toast applied to everyone equally? She says talking about anything. So now, conservatives are not allowed to speak at all? How long before you say, do, think something that gets you in the group that is no longer allowed to speak? Watch out! The lynch mob is coming for you next!
Following is but a tiny fraction of incidents of a verbiage being deemed as anything but a God given right guaranteed by the Constitution by the ever more powerful PC Police...
Tom Klocek was fired from DePaul University for daring to encourage students to question Muslim/Israeli relations.
Is not education about teaching students to question rather than to blindly follow any fool thing that is said? What the heck is behind the craziness that some topics are too volatile to debate? You see, again the Nanny State deciding what is too dangerous for us. This is a University not a kindergarten class!
Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000.00 for using what was deemed a slur against gay people. Guys and gals, I’m here to tell you I hear teenagers call anything they don’t like gay a hundred times a day everyday. I don’t like it. However, are we going to lock up the vast majority of teens for slang? I don't think the PC Police have enough jails for that. But, then again, maybe that's what all those manned FEMA centers with barbed wire just waiting are for. It's not like they are full...Yet. Hm?
- NBA-fines-Kobe-Bryant-$100,000-for-gay-slur - Chicago Sun-Times
NEW YORK — Kobe Bryant has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for using a derogatory gay term in frustration over a referee’s call. NBA Commissioner David Stern announced the disciplinary action Wednesday, saying the distasteful term used by Bryant shoul
About Roland Martin
Roland Martin got his hand slapped by CNN over two Tweets that were construed as derogatory to gay people. Having seen the Tweets, that can’t be concluded conclusively, but it was enough for the PC police to taser him! Granted, his Tweet is in poor taste, but, let's look at this closer for a minute. Here is a guy who used PC ideology to his own benefit time and time again calling others out for bigotry, for being religious, for many things. Now, the same weapon he used so well is being turned on him. PC can and will be used against anyone at any time! It has to stop. Freedom of speech extends to freedom of opinion regardless of popularity. Or, at least it used to. If we wish to remain free, it has to.
Let's see. It was illegal for the Mexican flag to fly in America without an American flag. But, since someone yelled racism, which this was clearly not, the PC police jumped all over it and his sentence was harsher than it would have been otherwise. Do you think there would have even been a trial had the reverse happened in Mexico? This was never about race. It was about law, about respect, about patriotism.
Patriotic now means quiet.
Constantly, we are seeing images and reports of acts that were at one time considered free speech, or more over acts considered patriotic, as being bad. Said acts are being punished. This repetition cognitively and behaviorally conditions the populace to first shut their mouths and to second not be patriotic, in fact to be down right anti patriotic. What is this training our children to be like? Let us examine just a few incidents of what was just described...
What about the loyal Americans who have been fined or even jailed for taking down Mexican Flags flown over and/or without the American flag which is illegal? Again, we see what is really a patriotic act, done in defense and support of America, slapped down.
What about the incident in the California high school where the America students were sent home for wearing T shirts with American flags. Let's see, American children being patriotic getting punished for it. Talk about a turn around for the BAD!
The list goes on and on.
How long before you are on it?
I suspect some of you are thinking, “Nope. Not me. I know better. I’m going to be quiet.”
Can you really say being patriotic is not being punished?
Being called out in front of the class is humilating for youngsters.
This poor child. After being instructed in art class to draw whatever she wished, her drawing of the American Flag with the words God bless America written in crayon was taken up by the teacher and called offensive. Mind you, the drawing of Obama was lauded for greatness. What kind of impression do you think that left on the young minds of the entire class?
What exactly were the lessons taught through action, deed, and word?
- Don't be patriotic.
- Support Obama.
- Don't mention God.
- America is offensive.
- God is offensive.
- You will be humiliated if the teacher doesn't agree with your choice when you are given one.
The subconscious mind never forgets. These lessons will stay in the minds of these children for the rest of their lives regardless of them being able to call them to conscious memory or not. In my opinion, this teacher should be terminated immediately.
What has happened when being proud of being American in America is the wrong answer? Nothing good!
And that brings us to the conclusion.
In conclusion, this movement of only what is politically correct being allowed not only shuts up the people cited for violating it, it is designed to shut up anyone who might ever question, might have something critical to say, might just have a better idea. In essence, it’s designed to shut you up.
Welcome to the new America!
