Patriotism in America - Is it still allowed? Who decides?

The word of the day, guys and gals, is patriotic.

I can remember being taught as early back as first grade to be patriotic, though I really didn't understand what that entailed at the time. To me, it was kind of boring songs about America at music time which was more fun than math. It meant the teacher talking about how great America was and me thinking how sad it must be to live somewhere else like that scary place Mom always talked about when I wouldn't eat my veggies. You know where that was. It was that place where all the little children were starving.

I really wanted to help them, but learned fast I didn’t know how. You see my suggestion of sending the dreaded broccoli to them in the mail met with less than pleasing results. In fact, the results were reddening to say the least. I had a problem with sarcasm cloaking my pearls of wisdom from the start. I never really mastered the avoidance of it. Now, my sarcasm is in favor less and less. I fear it will get me in trouble more and more for what was once patriotic is now considered to be exactly opposite of what it used to be.

It used to be considered patriotic to fly the American flag. Now, some are upset because it is offensive to people from other countries. Never mind that they are here, in America, now. It used to be that serving America through the armed forces was a noble and patriotic deed. Now, our returning soldiers face one of the highest levels of unemployment upon return of all groups identified. It used to be considered patriotic to show symbolic patriotism through flags and such at school. Now, teens are sent home and suspended for wearing a tee shirt with the American flag on it. It used to be patriotic to say the Pledge in school. Now, some schools forbid it as it might offend someone.

Danger! Someone might be offended.

Someone is offended. I am! I am offended at the lack of respect for patriotism in our nation. I am offended by the nanny state mentality that is turning our youth into helpless, mindless, drones. I am offended that our American leaders are no longer proud of being American!

This Hub will Endeavour to do the following…

  • Define patriotic and its familial words.
  • Critically examine how these terms have evolved over time.
  • Critically examine the current trend in the evolution of said terms specifically through policy and what is being said by our nations leaders at the current time.
  • Examine what this is doing to our freedom and our nation.

How did this happen?

When did it happen? It seems like I went to sleep one night and when I woke up word meanings had turned upside down. Things are changing mighty fast these days.

I like to start these Hubs with a definition and this definition hit on one of my pet peeves.

Dictionary.com defines patriotic as…

“1. of, like, suitable for, or characteristic of a patriot.
2. expressing or inspired by patriotism: a patriotic ode.”

Duh!

You don’t define a word with another variation on the word itself! Even the darn dictionaries are becoming victims of the dumbing down of America! I'm not even an English teacher and this drives me nuts. Jeez.

Moving on…

OK, it appears as if we must side track and examine the root of the word, if we desire a true definition.

Here we go again.

Dictionary.com defines a patriot as the following…

“1. a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.
2. a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.
3. ( initial capital letter ) Military . a U.S. Army antiaircraft missile with a range of 37 miles (60 km) and a 200-pound (90 kg) warhead, launched from a tracked vehicle with radar and computer guidance and fire control.”

Pater - Father

Patrios - Of one's fathers

Patris - Fatherland

The online etymology dictionary

Things start to get interesting.

If we really look at definitions one and two above, we see contradiction. In the first the concentration is on country. Yes, technically it’s about a person, but not just any person, but rather one who defends the nation. When we look at the second definition, this one is about defending against the government of the nation. The government runs the nation. Do you not see how these two definitions seem at odds? Now, were we to assume that the government ran the nation in such a way as was best for the people of the nation, according to the Bill of Rights in our Constitution, we would have no need for the second definition at all.

Did the definition start off that way, with contradictions?

I have to think not.

According to Ask.com answers, Wikipedia, and Wiki-answers, the term patriot can be traced back a very long way. The English version of the word goes back to the sixth century in England. Prior to that it has roots in the Greek language. Interestingly, the older definitions only concentrate on the first definition presented above, one of “… supporting a country.” That implies the later second definition shows how the word has evolved or at least how it started evolving.

We all know many left the old world for the new over laws they felt limited freedom. This nation was built on the idea of all people being inherently free. We further all know that at its inception, and for much of our history, America has left out the “all” part and concentrated on white males. Thankfully, that too has evolved and now includes all races, genders, religions and so forth.

But, I digress.

The topic here is the evolution of the word patriotic and its familial words of patriot, patriotism and so forth.

In a free nation, how can any form of speech be considered unpatriotic? How can things that take away freedom not be contrary to the very principles said nation was founded upon? Is that to say that freedom is limitless, or that it comes without responsibility? No. Of course, freedom of speech does and should have limits. For example, we all know it is irresponsible to yell fire in a crowd when there is no fire. So, firstly, we must conclude that freedom of speech comes with the responsibility to tell the truth. By extension, it must be patriotic in a free society to speak truthfully about the government, any policies issued from it, and persons representing it. For that matter, if we are to live in a free society we must be free to speak about anyone or anything or said freedom is only a farce.

Policy - Both official and unofficial.

Stop for a minute and think how many public figures over the last four years have been in trouble for what is considered politically incorrect speech. I’m sure you can think of at least a few. The most recent to come to my mind is Pat Buchanan. This man has been a major player in American politics for decades. He is a conservative. He has “parted” ways with MSNBC, at their initiation, over a controversy that was deemed so politically incorrect that now groups are clamoring for him to never have access to the public via a microphone again.

"Shouldn't be part of the national dialog."

Note, in the video the president of MSNBC, who last I checked was not an elected leader of our nation, stated publicly that what Mr. Buchanan had to say, "shouldn't be part of the national dialog." Just who is he to say such a thing? Did you elect him to decide what you are allowed to hear and what you are not? Do you trust him to do such? Funny, I always thought you had the right to decide for yourself. If I find something on the TV racist, I turn off the TV. It's pretty simple folks. The nanny nation mentality is now censoring what we hear on top of what we read. We must be truly stupid to not be able to tell for ourselves what is harmful.

All together class...

Thank you, Nanny State.

I can't think for myself.

Thank you, Nanny State for keeping

me safe from thoughts and ideas.

Oh no! The horror. He questioned if the nation will survive. RUN! | Source

Peek from behind lids squinting in fear...

What exactly did he, Pat Buchanan, do? Oh, my gosh! It must have been something horrible for such sanction. Was it?

He entitled one chapter, “The End of White America” in his book Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025. HM. OK, I see it now. Such a title could lead to the downfall of all civility, everything holy, apple pie and so on. It's not as if any other author in history has used a dramatic title to get someone's attention. I’m sure you detect the dripping sarcasm. Please!

This is a prime example of how politically correct speech is used as a tool to shut down voices of dissension. In this case, the specifically offensive speech was not even designed to offend, not even spoken. In fact, what Mr. Buchanan was referring to was simple numbers and projected racial demographics, not a race war or slur on any race as could be seen plainly by anyone who bothered to read it. When Bill Clinton predicted the same thing using census data to a crowd years ago he got a standing ovation. But then, he's more liberal so it's OK.

Source

Run! It's a lynch mob.

The group that specifically was the lynch mob for Mr. Buchanan is named “The Color of Change”. They stated that his words were…

“Extremist ideas are incredibly harmful to millions of LBGT people around the world.”

How exactly? Since when is having a different opinion dangerous? For that matter, how exactly are his ideas extremist? Is it because they come from a Christian man? Is it because he does not approve? Is his lack of approval really that threatening? If so, then by extension of that logic anything any of us think or say that doesn't match up exactly with this group, or what MSNBC's president thinks will not be allowed. How does that make you feel?

Is differing opinions not part of what makes us each unique? How boring our world would be if everyone thought the same about everything. You see, dear reader, the problem is not that his opinion is different from the mainstream, it’s that it’s different and in opposition to the group in power, at the moment. Further irony includes the not small fact that the title people are acting so enraged about was only the thing the PC police could catch him with. What they are really in arms about is his conservatism.

Is that to say he has never said anything indicating his disapproval of certain behaviors such as those relating to sexual preference? No. It is not. It is to say the man has the right to his opinion. He never tried to hurt them. He never tried to change them. They sure are going after him in a hurtful way.

How long before it's your turn?

Today it’s Mr. Buchanan under the firing squad. Today certain groups are in favor. We all know things change. Tomorrow those groups could just as quickly be out of favor. If we allow this politically correct ideology to be used as a weapon of control, as a means of stopping free speech, it won’t be long before its constant hunger encompasses everyone and can be used at will to target anyone at any time.

It's OK to call the other side demons

VP calls Tea Party terrorist

Hm? Let's see. Buchanan and others get canned but the VP just gets to deny. Never mind that the witnesses were from his own party. People in the in crowd, the left, who have said such just get told it's bad. Funny how only one side gets punished, the other gets a talking too... and not a strong one! Is that equality?

What's good for the goose is NOT good for the gander.

Ironic is it not, that while the title of his chapter was so offensive as to be dangerous to the survival of our nation, the following liberal leader calling republicans “demons” is not offensive under the PC umbrella in any way. Hm?

Maxine Waters has come out publicly and called republicans demons. Mind you this is applied to specific people not data, not projections of what numbers will do, but to conservatives and republicans. She further says Republicans are blocking jobs. Funny, I thought it was the democrats that nixed Keystone.

She states, “Don’t ever again in life let me see those republicans in our halls… talking about anything.” Our halls, as in public government halls, meaning our for her side only. Talk about intolerant. Is not the politically correct ideology that allowed for Pat to be toast applied to everyone equally? She says talking about anything. So now, conservatives are not allowed to speak at all? How long before you say, do, think something that gets you in the group that is no longer allowed to speak? Watch out! The lynch mob is coming for you next!

Other examples

Following is but a tiny fraction of incidents of a verbiage being deemed as anything but a God given right guaranteed by the Constitution by the ever more powerful PC Police...

Tom Klocek

Tom Klocek

Tom Klocek was fired from DePaul University for daring to encourage students to question Muslim/Israeli relations.

Is not education about teaching students to question rather than to blindly follow any fool thing that is said? What the heck is behind the craziness that some topics are too volatile to debate? You see, again the Nanny State deciding what is too dangerous for us. This is a University not a kindergarten class!

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000.00 for using what was deemed a slur against gay people. Guys and gals, I’m here to tell you I hear teenagers call anything they don’t like gay a hundred times a day everyday. I don’t like it. However, are we going to lock up the vast majority of teens for slang? I don't think the PC Police have enough jails for that. But, then again, maybe that's what all those manned FEMA centers with barbed wire just waiting are for. It's not like they are full...Yet. Hm?

About Roland Martin

Roland Martin

Roland Martin got his hand slapped by CNN over two Tweets that were construed as derogatory to gay people. Having seen the Tweets, that can’t be concluded conclusively, but it was enough for the PC police to taser him! Granted, his Tweet is in poor taste, but, let's look at this closer for a minute. Here is a guy who used PC ideology to his own benefit time and time again calling others out for bigotry, for being religious, for many things. Now, the same weapon he used so well is being turned on him. PC can and will be used against anyone at any time! It has to stop. Freedom of speech extends to freedom of opinion regardless of popularity. Or, at least it used to. If we wish to remain free, it has to.

Let's see. It was illegal for the Mexican flag to fly in America without an American flag. But, since someone yelled racism, which this was clearly not, the PC police jumped all over it and his sentence was harsher than it would have been otherwise. Do you think there would have even been a trial had the reverse happened in Mexico? This was never about race. It was about law, about respect, about patriotism.

Source

Patriotic now means quiet.

Constantly, we are seeing images and reports of acts that were at one time considered free speech, or more over acts considered patriotic, as being bad. Said acts are being punished. This repetition cognitively and behaviorally conditions the populace to first shut their mouths and to second not be patriotic, in fact to be down right anti patriotic. What is this training our children to be like? Let us examine just a few incidents of what was just described...

What about the loyal Americans who have been fined or even jailed for taking down Mexican Flags flown over and/or without the American flag which is illegal? Again, we see what is really a patriotic act, done in defense and support of America, slapped down.

What about the incident in the California high school where the America students were sent home for wearing T shirts with American flags. Let's see, American children being patriotic getting punished for it. Talk about a turn around for the BAD!

The list goes on and on.
How long before you are on it?
I suspect some of you are thinking, “Nope. Not me. I know better. I’m going to be quiet.”

Can you really say being patriotic is not being punished?

Being called out in front of the class is humilating for youngsters.

This poor child. After being instructed in art class to draw whatever she wished, her drawing of the American Flag with the words God bless America written in crayon was taken up by the teacher and called offensive. Mind you, the drawing of Obama was lauded for greatness. What kind of impression do you think that left on the young minds of the entire class?

What exactly were the lessons taught through action, deed, and word?

  1. Don't be patriotic.
  2. Support Obama.
  3. Don't mention God.
  4. America is offensive.
  5. God is offensive.
  6. You will be humiliated if the teacher doesn't agree with your choice when you are given one.

The subconscious mind never forgets. These lessons will stay in the minds of these children for the rest of their lives regardless of them being able to call them to conscious memory or not. In my opinion, this teacher should be terminated immediately.

What has happened when being proud of being American in America is the wrong answer? Nothing good!

And that brings us to the conclusion.

In conclusion, this movement of only what is politically correct being allowed not only shuts up the people cited for violating it, it is designed to shut up anyone who might ever question, might have something critical to say, might just have a better idea. In essence, it’s designed to shut you up.

Welcome to the new America!

Great hub Poetvix.

What is so disturbing about the Pat Buchannon case is that there exists a non profit organisation who's sole intention is to shut down any voices that do not fit with thier political and moral ideology. This is facism plain and simple and it needs to be called out for what it is.

I struggle to understand the mentality of people who want to shut down debate because they dont like what the other side has to say. All this does is build resentment.

Another story that stinks is the removal of Judge Napolitano's freedom watch from Fox Business.

Anyway great hub, and great message!

Theeyeballkid - Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. I would be really interested in seeing where their funding comes from. No group should have the power to shut down any voice. I think it goes a little further than building resentment. If they are successful, how will the young ever know of any way other than their own. Thankfully, Americans will not allow this to stand. I'm going to have to read up on Judge Napolitano's case and I thank you for the tip. God bless!

Rhonda,

You know, I want to say something original, so that you know that I'm not just falling in line and blowing smoke up your boo-boo. But you honestly do impress me. Why don't you throw any freaking dud every once in a while so that I can know for sure that your human. Of course your subject matter is nothing short of delicious, and your style is awesome, but you lay your workout in such a professional presentation that it makes everything else looks small to me. Okay, that's enough ass smooching, but Rhonda, I mean every word of it.

You know you can always soften something, but softening it doesn't change what it is. You can change retarded to mentally challenged, but someone who is mentally challenged is still retarded. You can change ugly to "hottie challenged", but the chick's still ugly, and when she slaps you, she won't pull back because you changed it to "hottie challenged". The only people that you make happy with this politically correct crap is a small group of intellectual wannabes. Screw em. I notice that people who place so much importance on political correctness are the very people that throw manners and respect out the window. I have nothing to back that up, it's just my opinion.

Webster did a little dancing on that definition of patriotic I think. Let me take a shot at it. Being patriotic, I think, is an act or an expression that demonstrates love, and loyalty towards your country. If you love something or someone, there is nothing to be ashamed of, and in fact, with real love comes the responsibility of openly proclaiming that love.

We are entitled to reasonable freedoms. Let me see if I can think of a few reasonable freedoms. Okay ... I've got three! Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Some really smart dudes from long time ago, said that our Creator gave us these rights, and Barack Obama or Nancy Pelosi can't take them away.

Jim,

Thank you for taking time out of your Sunday afternoon and frontier conquering to come here. You say the sweetest things! They mean all the more for I know you don't blow smoke. You have more important things to do.

Hottie challenged? Now that's something I will have to remember!

I like your definition. It's short and to the point. Sadly, while I agree that the most PC among us are also the rudest, they are amassing power at an alarming rate. The very idea a special interest group can shut down someone as powerful as Pat Buchanan speaks loudly to the fact that normal Americans are insignificant in their path to say the least. Alone that is. We had best start working together and I mean right this second! I kid you not, I see more similarities with Germany during it's most dark days and America now than I see differences. Greg just sent an email with a short commentary by a professor saying pretty much the same thing, much more eloquently.

Truly, I think collectively America is in much more trouble than most of us are willing to even consider. If we don't start not just snapping to that fact, but acting to counter it in much more assertive ways, right now, well God help us all.

Thanks again for the read, the comment, and the juice! You're the man with the plan and I stand behind you 100%.

God bless!

Hello young lady: Very thoughtful intelligent piece and a sad reality in America today. We are so far down the road to serfdom today and yet people are concerned with Whitney Houston or Survivor. We are Greece, the former Weimar Republic and Rome all wrapped into one neat little politically correct bankrupt package.

Rome is burning and it is people like you, putting forth a rational honest opinion that will help prevent the fire from spreading and eventually extinguish the raging inferno. The political correctness czars have broken out of the zoo and are running around scaring the children and it is time to start rounding up PC police.

We are losing our ideals and values that are unique in the world. Patriotism isn't about defending a country it is rather defending the ideals on which the country is founded. It is important that we instill back into our government a healthy fear of the People, as George Washington said: 'a people that fear their government leads to tyranny, but a government that fears its people results in Liberty. My point is that you young lady, are important to protecting and promoting those old tired ideals that once made America the "shining city on the hill" as Ronald Reagan use to say.

So stay strong, continue protecting and defending the dimly lit city on the hill and soon we will be shining brightly once again.

Thank you, God bless and keep up the good work!

Lions Den Media - Thank you for taking the time to read and leave such a kind and insightful comment. I think the distraction of America through TV, Internet, and other such media is not accidental. Not only does it distract so many from what is happening, in my mind it becomes almost a drug. Granny used to call television the idiot box. More and more I think she was more right than she knew.

We have become like all of the great fallen societies, corrupted from within. It can be found in all levels of government and while I hate to admit it, it's on both sides. Further, as a nation we are loosing our moral compass. The family unit is assaulted and religion has been labeled as the last refuge of the weak minded. Ironic is it not that the family and religion are the two things people tend to be most loyal to before nationalism?

I so hope and pray you are right and we can return America to greatness. We have a long way to go. Our youth are lost and have not had the ideals of this nation instilled within them. We have not given them the tools they need to survive, to learn for themselves or even to critically examine the world around them. If we don't fix this before we die out, they don't stand a chance at a free existence.

Thanks again for your time and your kindness, not to mention your stellar points.

Billybuc - It's good to see you return. Me, run for office? Now, that's a laugh. I wouldn't even know where to begin. The office I would want doesn't exist, guardian of the Constitution. That's the beauty of the document. If we were to just follow it as it was written without all the constant assaults on the principles of freedom it was written to ensure we would be great.

Thanks so much for your kind and supportive comments. You sure know how to give a girl a boost. God bless and the happiest of hubbing for you!

Love that song by Charlie Daniels, Vix, and I commend you for continuing keeping this "can-of-worms" open and flowing. But to be honest, my friend, it really angers me that I have to choose sides and go far, far, far, to the right, much farther than I have ever gone, just to try to help balancing the far left, because that seems to be where i's going: Far left or far right. I used to be on the left (where the environment was/is concerned) but for other issues I was on the right. I guess that kind of makes me moderate, although I wonder if I really need a title, or label. For another comment, I used to think Nansy Pelosi was scary (still do) but having heard and seen that short video of Maxine Waters, OMG! have I changed my mind. God help us if that woman ever gets any real power, and being in charge of finance seems to me to be "real" power. (In my latest novel I gave my heroine the last name of "Waters") Unfortunately I didn't make the connection.

Anyway, Poetvix, thank you for these continuing hubs. Just recently I chanced to read about those huge (empty) prison camps being built. Wonder what they are for...?

All I can say now is "Stay tuned, folks."

SubRon7 - Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave such a kind comment. I'm right there in the same boat with you. I care about the environment, people who need help, and many things typically associate with the democratic party historically. But, what I have seen them become over the last five or so years, and maybe I'm just snapping to the facts late, is anything but democratic. They use all the right phrases, they say they want to make things better, but their actions are doing anything but that. The legislation they are passing is hurting all people.

The video freaks me out. This woman already has too much power and obviously not a shred of caring about what anyone thinks but herself. You know what they say about power and corruption. Scary!

Oh yes! Those supposed FEMA camps are all over the country, staffed and just waiting for...? THAT IS THE QUESTION!

God bless!

The political correct police are here in force, the last Hub I wrote included my opinion on the Gay agenda. I deleted this portion of my Hub because I remember that my esteemed colleague James Watkins got his hub removed for sharing his opinion on the gay agenda- How chilling and sickeningly hypocritical.

Wikipedia is an extreme example of historical revisionism. They've totally rewritten history, even changing the definition of words to fit thier leftist views.

wba108 ~ Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Is it not scary in America where one is not allowed to speak an opinion? If such a trend is allowed to stand, it will directly be applied to all groups eventually. That is one of the greatest dangers in my mind that is just starting to emerge from the division such ideology has wrought. Today, some groups use it to their advantage without stopping to think that it will be used against any and all who question in the long run. What started under the guise of respect for diversity which is a good thing has mutated into a tool of social control that is just in it's test stages. It's going to get so much worse if people don't wake up, all people.

Thanks again for the read. God bless and happy hubbing!

Hi Poetvix

What are the political police so afraid of? I think they just want to cause further hate and discord.

If I chose to live in another country such as the United States, I would certainly not be offended by the American flag. I also think that most other immigrants are not offended either. Maybe a few would be but to them I would say go back home. A country should look after it's land and people and not cater to a few whiners. It is impossible to please everybody.

Sueswan - I don't think they are afraid. They are, in my opinion, anything but. They are using this twisted idea of limiting speech to create a programed generation of Americans that will not question, be critical, dare even suggest they are wrong through cognitive and behavioral conditioning. Sadly, they are making progress. It's a dark day for freedom.

I love the Twisted Sister video! I'm going to have to make this song choice of the day! Thank you. God bless and happy hubbing for you!

Hello, poetvix,

I am very grateful to you for writing and publishing this article. In my opinion, you have provided a valuable public service.

Personally, I am an American patriot who always makes a whole lot of noise and always carries a great-big stick. Furthermore, I am always ready, willing and able to take on anybody who tries to dictate what I do and what I say, and the way I do it and the way say it.

In fact, I declared war on the "PC crowd" many years ago, and I have busted up a considerable number of its members -- and I will continue to bust them up.

Voted up & awesome, Poetvix. As usual you put it where it should be. Up front & in their face. I plan on going to one of these political rallies and see what happens when I start quoting the Declaration of Independence. I'll probably be arrested for treason.

Feenix ~ Hello to you, sir. Thank you very much for taking the time to read and leave such a kind comment.

I hope you go on to "bust up" many, many more for God knows this country needs it. I don't know what's up but around here just three years or so ago, I didn't encounter many people who thought along extreme left lines. I'm seeing more and more now. I find it very hard to even have a discussion with them for typically they get insulting if they hear anything they don't like. I'm sick of it. I believe in being polite and respectful of all people. They surely make it hard!

To me, the more I look into the whole ideology of PC, the more I explore it, the more I am convinced it is purely evil. It's deceptive and it's divisive. It is being used as an extremely powerful weapon and America is bleeding as a result. It must stop.

God bless you always and happy hubbing!

Geordmc ~ Thanks bunches for dropping by and leaving such a nice comment. I hope you do go but be careful. You won't be welcome. Someone needs to be quoting our founding documents to these people! If it goes bad, I will personally protest for your release from jail as an American hero. God bless you and happy hubbing!

Dearest Epi - Thank you so much for your read, your kind words, your ongoing support, and most of all for being your one of a kind, unique, self. You are the sweetest man.

As I have watched world events unfold for the last few months it illustrates clearly that this threat to freedom is not just in America. It's growing. I can imagine a world without freedom. It's not a world that I want to leave for our children.

God bless and keep you always, Colin. You are the best of us.
