People Just Cant Afford It!!!!

Do you think that we should stop donating until we get the countries back to some normality?

We are in the worst financial crisis ever here in Britain and in America yet we are still getting bombarded with the donate to charities adverts, when most people are out of work and struggling to make ends meet financially. We have businesses collapsing and going into administration, we have jobs becoming fewer and fewer, we have millions on benefits, we have no certain future of what will happen and yet we have to listen to the problems of other countries when our countries are going through the worst time ever.

Take Christmas for example on Christmas day I put the television on to watch a film with my family, and every time there was a break, the first advert to come on was a one about donating to charity and the suffering in other countries. I know they are having a hard time over there but so are we here in Britain and its not fair bombarding people like this, when there is not enough money to support our own country.

Dont get me wrong I am not a monster, I do give to charities such as the help the heroes, victim support but only when I can afford to like everyone else, but right now people can not afford to give money away at the minute so I think these adverts should rethink their strategies until we can get the countries back to some normality, because the money being sent over to them could be used to help the homeless and jobless here in the UK and America and also re-fluctuate the economies.

It makes you believe that if you don't donate money then people will judge you as if your some kind of monster, when in fact charity begins in the home, and right now our people need the money more than anything else, why dont some of the other richer countries deal with the problems abroad just until we can sort ourselves out?

You even get celebrities promoting the charities, well good for them, why don't they donate all their money to those charities seen as they can afford it, but stop guilt tripping people because pretty soon people will get sick and tired of this and slowly the donations will stop altogether.

I know that there will be mixed responses to this but at the same time some things just have to be said, even if they are controversial its still needs to be said.

I agree. The first bit of charity that needs to stop in all the foreign aid we give out around the world. We can't afford it! Plus, they take the money with one hand and give us the finger with the other.

I agree to my_girl_sara they do give us the finger well and truly. This foreign aid has to cease as soon as because otherwise we will become the third world countries.

Good article I agree with your points. As for the British, one simple way to start pulling out of the financial issue would be to stop spending like a Hollywood star with a limitless credit card. For example if they donated the money wasted on this years olympics to charity we would not need to see another donation advert in our lifetime!

The United Kingdom as a whole is heading into a dark hole from which it will not be coming out of any time soon, the country is run by those who like many other nations have never had to "live" in it like the vast majority of its citizens.

Give it a few years and other nations will have adverts "for just 3 euro's a month you can give a British person a hot meal"

To calpol25: I totally agree. Charity starts at home. My motto is always give to and pay yourself first. If you don't, who will.

Charity does start at home. How can you give to someone else when you do not have it to give for yourself and families. Great point.

Thank you Dexter & RJ68 for commenting, I just get so mad at this whole charity business, when we cant even keep ourselves they still bombard us with the suffering of other countries. :(

I made a donation about a year ago to a non profit children's fund and every since then I have been receiving mail regarding different charities. However, I understand that these organisations do not know our income situation.

True they dont know our situation but they sell off your information to other charities so that they can hound you, I get emails all the time too with the please donate, or give two pounds a month to. I have banned them now.

To me I see these adverts as little more than corporate begging. If I want to donate I will I don't need to be nagged by an advert every time I turn the tv on or check my e-mails. Walk in town there will be someone playing a broken guitar asking for money, obviously homeless. That is a good cause. But I find it hard to donate to all these mass campaigns simply because of one reason. Those campaigns cost a lot of money, the televised adverts and mail ones are worth thousands if not hundreds of thousands of pounds to reach us. Why not just donate that to their cause instead of spending it on the charity itself. Don't get me wrong, 40% of all my applications revenue go straight to cancer research UK and Help the Heroes. So I am all for charity, I just resent it being forced on people.

I agree R9139 it is dreadful the way they nag us and the thousands of pounds they use for advertising, I am for charity too, but again only where there is evidence that it works and goes to a good cause such as cancer research UK and Help the Heroes because there we can see that it does make a difference.

Oh you poor little things getting asked for a small donation, don't worry about the people starving to death that are asking for the donations, they are fine. Man up and either tell them to get stuffed if you /really/ cant afford it or do the right thing and donate to worthy causes.

It never is small donation because its a continous one all the time, I do tell them to get stuffed all the time because we have too many people homeless and starving to death in our own country.

This was a great hub Calpol25, but what would really be fantastic if a politician gave to charity. Most of them have millions upon millions. Why don't they give to charity? They only spend it on themselve. Politicians only take, if they gave maybe then, things would start to get better. Really good hub! Gave you a thumbs up!!

I am from Manchester but live in Ireland, where man things are bad financially. A young girl knocked on my door yesterday and asked for money each month to come out of my bank, to train up Irish people to go over to 3rd world countries, to help.

I told her i had no bank account, as i was not working, she thought that was funny. I was polite to her, as you know as a J.W. I experience rudeness, so did not want to be rude to her. When i asked her was she asking for money out of my bank, she said well i am not going to call for it every week. I am a teacher, and have just got a little work, but i cant understand why people just do not realise, that we would help if we could, but if we cannot then we cannot...... I am also with you on this one..... keep writing.

Thanks Joy, I know they keep coming at you with please donate but they forget that Ireland has it very bad financially, Britain is not far behind at the minute with Financial worries, and all this foreign they keep sending when it could be used here to help the public...

Aaarghh grrr makes me mad :)

Same here Joy, but you would think that they would some how give people a break at the current time with all the problems we have at our door steps at the minute :)

Very strange, you know I have noticed that alot of people are saying that lately but there are a few cleaning jobs going and other jobs in that sector. I am quite happy doing those jobs even though I am trained in other things, we have to do things in this life that we dont want to but we need to in order to survive, strange maybe she will find something better lets hope anyways lol :)

Amen! there are tasks on a job that we do like that is less pleasing. People will take whatever legitimate job they can as long as it pays the bills and keeps them afloat until something better comes along.

Absolutely agree RJ68 :)

Oh Joy56 I hope she finds something better :)

You're correct, Callum - we should donate to whom we want, when we want and NOT be bombarded with advertisements and guilt trips (remind you of something else?). How much money would be saved for good use if there were no adverts? Most people are aware of the areas they would like to donate to (if they wish to) so when they want they can just google and go to the appropriate site.

Ian.

I agree Ian its so damn frustrating because all the money wasted on the television for adverts could be used to create new jobs for people in the UK and helping the two million or so we have unemployed. Makes my blood boil :)
