Mothers and Society

All mothers dream of nothing but the best for their children. But dreams come in different sizes and shapes depending on the circumstances of one’s life. Hard work is a great factor for one to reach the peak of what one thinks is possible but there are contexts that kill dreams before they are born.

There is a larger picture that calls for attention. All mothers respond to the call the best way they can in the context of their different circumstances.

Two contexts of motherhood

While we celebrate motherhood

and the beauty and power

attached to it, let us remember

the mothers who usually

do not receive flowers and greetings

on Mothers' Day!

Poverty is systemic violence and the poor are painfully trapped in it. Yet there are still people who blame those who are trapped and not the ones who are setting and maintaining the trap....http://www.flickr.com/photos/omsel/2673906253/

Poverty tends to kill children's dreams

There are mothers whose dreams have been killed before they were born

When we see a child we think of the mother. There are mothers who, like Sisyphus, try very hard to roll the rock uphill only to see the rock fall to the ground again and again and again.

Thanks for your generous comments, laringo. We, women, mothers or not, have a mothering role. And as mothers, it pains the heart to see children who are loved by mothers who are so in pain because they can't get out of the systemic trap of poverty and powerlessness.

This is very impacting message, and unfortunately it is true. Thanks for reminding us that not all mothers are remembered on Mother's Day. Some are left forgotten.
