Princess Diana, Harrods & Fayed's Unbreakable Bond

First Memorial

The whole world knows Princess Diana - The Princess of Hearts.

Harrods is the worlds most famous luxury department Store, owned by Egyptian Billionaire, Al Fayed Mohamed.

Dodi Fayed (the son of Mohamed Al Fayed) was romantically linked to Princess Diana and sadly passed away in that fatal car crash in Paris, on 31 August 1997. Mohamed Al Fayed believes till this day, that the death of his son and the Princess was a conspiracy. An official UK police inquiry into the Paris car crash found no evidence the couple were murdered. (Dec. 14, 2006). The Lord Stevens report on the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al Fayed came nearly a decade after the fatal Paris car crash. It's a wonder why it took so long.

Anyway, Mohamed Al Fayed set up two memorials for Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed in the Harrods London Store. The first memorial is above. Four candles burn steadily around the portraits and they are supported by a Fountain with endless flow of water - symbolising eternal life.

A large, leather bound book also lies open and is signed by people from all over the world, who are united in this loss. It is reported that messages fill one book, every fortnight.

The second Memorial is a bronze statue of the couple dancing, called “Innocent Victims” also in the Harrods London shop.

Interesting Facts about Mohamed Al Fayed:

  • Mohamed Al Fayed has been in Britain since 1974 and has still not been given British citizenship. The government repeatedly reject his applications and yet, this is a man who employs hundreds of Europeans, which in my opinion is good for the economy.
  • He has other massive businesses which include: Harrods Bank - One of the most exclusive bank accounts around. Harrods Aviation/Air harrods - Private aircraft and helicopter services. Also, not forgetting - The famous Ritz Hotel in Paris.

These are just a few.

  • Jade Goody, the famous reality Big Brother (UK) star, who died of cervical cancer in March 09, got married a few weeks before she passed away. Mohamed Al Fayed, donated a wedding dress to her.  It was a Manuel Mota, Ivory gown from Harrods - £3,500.

  • He is extremely generous. He has Charities and also contributes largely to other Charities:

Gt Ormond Street Childrens Hospital

Mr Al Fayed's support to date, makes him the biggest single donor to the Hospital.

The Al Fayed Charitable Foundation

Set up to help children suffering from life-threatening illnesses or living in poverty.

Ratburana Orphanage

Mr Al Fayed visited Thailand on a mission of mercy to help the children of Bangkok improve their quality of life and prospects for the future.

Again these are just a few. You can find out more at www.alfayed.com

I admire the way you infused the pictures and links. I wish i could do the same. And i never knew Mohamed Al Fayed owns the Paris Ritz Hotel.

I'm with bingskee. I makes so much sense that Princess Diana's death was a conspiracy so to prevent the union and consummation of marriage between her and Mohamed Al Fayed's son, as they were a bi-racial couple. Thank you for writing this. I wasn't aware of Mohamed's benevolence to others.

We are going to London in December and that is definitely going to be one of our first stops. I loved Princess Diana and always will. Her and Dodi's lives were cut short to soon and she is and always will be the "Queen Of Hearts."

Thanks for the all of the research. I was in London for three days, and I missed seeing Harrods. I only saw it in passing on my way to the airport. How I wished that I had seen it up close and personal, especially now that I've learned so much about it. Thanks again for sharing this with us.

One thing I don't really understand why British govt. not giving citizenship to Mr. Mohamed Al Fayed. The rumor about car crash plot might be true, maybe in the upcoming decade we will come to know the truth behind the car crash.Your presentation of this hub is just fabulous and equally well your picture placements.thanks.

Thanks Andromida. I agree with you. There are so many foreign people in London who don't even speak English and the Home Office are just issuing British Passports to them. (They now try to get people to sit a citizenship test though)..... and yes, the Truth about that crash will come out evenutally. The Truth can not be hidden. :)

London is such a beautiful place we thoroughly enjoyed it. So much to see... We had a wonderful time stayed way out in the beautiful countryside of New Forest visited many of the surrounding areas...then stayed in Trafalgar Square.

What a contrast!

You have done an excellent job here. So much so at some point we hope to visit again. Thank you for sharing!

Blessings

Hello Fishtiger,

It is a shame but look at how fast Harry and William have grown up. She'll always live on, through them.

Best wishes. :)

Truly a wonderful hub! Thank you! Now I have another spot to visit on my long list for visiting London. London has been on my radar for some time.

Loved your honesty about the citzenship request. Chaplin was exiled here in the US. So sad that we are not accepting. We need these facts.

Totally agree with you Missi Darnell. I think the truth will come out eventually but the Queen might have passed away by then...

Thanks for stopping.

After living in London for three years I was a regular shopper at Harrods which is awesome! I've been a big fan of princess Di all my life and I was devastated when she died. I do believe the princess and Dodi were murdered. I mean there is no way in hell the royals would accept an Arab Muslim in-law into their family should they have been married, and if Diana was pregnant it would mean a threat to the royal throne since her child would be in line to the throne and there is no way they would let that happen. I think Al fayed did have a point, too bad more people were not willing to cooperate with him to unravel the real truth. Nice hub hun xx

Lady_E profile image

Lady_E 6 years ago from London, UK Author

Hi Mamelody

You must miss London. I agree with your comments. I'm positive she was pregnant and cried when the news broke that she had died. Its just a matter of time before the truth comes out. I feel so much for Al-Fayed, it must be eating away at his heart. Its lovely that Diana had 2 sons. Sad she left them behind, but they have such a strong bond. (It would have been difficult if it was just one son).

Thanks for stopping. :)

I visited Harrods last Oct. 2008. It is sad to know how the story ended between Princess Diana and Dodi..such a tragedy. I am proud and saw their memorials at Harrods. I hope I can visit it again..forgot to buy a Teddy bear there..lol..thanks for sharing this post! very inspiring!

You have a good hub here.

I am surprised to hear that Mohamed Al Fayed, with such huge investments in Britain, is actually not a citizen of Britain for all those years. That is politics and it seems it started far before the death of Princess Diana.

Within the next one hundred years or so, we the people of this world shall stop being trivial and learn to accept that the king of England, who is also the supreme Governor of Church of England, can actually have a step brother or a step sister who has Arabic blood.

We all loved Princess Diana.

Lady_E profile image

Lady_E 6 years ago from London, UK Author

** Thanks EuroAngel - Glad you got to visit.

** Hi Ngureco - you are right. It's politics. He didn't deserve that treatment. All down to the "powers that be!"

I liked your last paragraph. Thanks for stopping.

The fact that he was never given citizenship gives some suspicion as to his son's death. I don't know how William and Harry can even live around their dad. Not saying he did it, but then again...

Lady_E profile image

Lady_E 5 years ago from London, UK Author

Very True Bgamall.

Maybe his sons are just being respectful and tolerant of him and Camilla.(who still has a price to pay for being the 3rd person in Diana's Marriage.)

The World is watching patiently...

Leaving aside the deaths and possible murders, it would be nice to write a story about the paperazi because Diana was indeed hounded by photographers and journalists when she became princess

Lady_E profile image

Lady_E 4 years ago from London, UK Author

Excellent Idea and timely. (If I do, I will also give credit to you on the article)

In the UK now - we have a "Levenson Inquiry" where Celebs and famous people are giving evidence as to how Press hound them and the horrible things they do, to get stories or photo's. As I watched it, I thought back to Princess Di and how gruesome it must have been for her.

The Inquiry was due to a revelation of phones being Hacked for stories.

Glad you stopped by. Thanks.
