Racism, Sexism, How Many Other 'Isms' Are There?

Racism is defined as the belief that different racial groups are have different characteristics and abilities and that some groups are naturally superior to others. In history racism has been a major part of the political and ideological underpinning of genocides, such as the holocaust. It was also a driving force behind the slave trade, as well as the racial problems the United States is having today.

However, racism is not the only problem that exists in the world today. The idea that ' We are better then them' has been on the earth for longer then we know and racism is not alone.

This hub is going to focus on Sexism. Sexism is defined as ' A devaluation towards women, and sexism causes problems for women'. This is an understatement in terms of a definition, because women have been have serious problems for as long as history has been written.

There is more violence against women then there is against men. In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered my an intimate partner. That is about 3 women per day, killed by someone who loved them. Or someone who said they loved them. However, women are experiencing much more harm then just being killed. Women are also experiencing dehumanization.

Most of the women in advertisements are thin, beautiful, and dressed sexually revealing. Women can be shown lying down, reclining in a chair and many other things.

Then there is a problem of pornography. The problem of pornography in the United States is generating about 14 billion dollars per year, and that is due to the legal pornography. Women have also been told, that their body is the most important thing they have.

So women have been spending money for breast implants, liposuction, and many other surgeries to make themselves beautiful. There are also a large number of beauty pageants in the United States, not on Miss America, Miss U.S. A, but also Prom Time, and even Toddlers in Tiaras. There is an actual beauty contest in China called Miss Plastic Surgery, which started in 2004. This contest is open to women from all nations, but only if they have had plastic surgery.

Not only do women have plastic surgery, they have health problems which include Anorexia, as well as bulimia, both of which can be long term illnesses. When women have Anorexia the basically starve themselves today. No matter how much weight they lose, they still think they are 'too fat'. Karen Carpenter , the leader singer of The Carpenter's s a famous musical group died of Anorexia, at the age of 32

Another problem against women is prostitution. Prostitution, pornography and sex trafficking aren't separable in the real world. There are young women from other countries who are promised jobs in the United States, but when the arrive they are forced into prostitution. They are held hostage and are beaten, starved and forced into submission. When they are finally afraid to do anything but obey their 'Master', then they become prostitutes. Sometimes prostitutes are young girls who have run away from homes where they have been abused, some are women who are addicted to drugs and are not receiving any help except from the man, or pimp who had promised to help them. Once this man starts to 'help' her, he starts to abuse her. The abuse is so severe the prostitute would rather sell her body then receive the abuse for not selling her body.

There are many other problems women are facing in the world to day, this hub has only focused on a few. There are also many other problems millions of people face just because of the color of the skin, the place where they were born, their sexual orientation. I am just wondering, how many more 'isms' are there in the world today and why?

Well done! It is everywhere. Devaluing women, despite what many people wish to believe, is stronger now than it was decades ago.

Thank you Skarlet, you are so right. I don't know why it is happening, but it is happening. Not just in this country but all around the world. In countries like Iran, I can't even imagine how bad it is.

This hub is so powerful.

I hate to see when women are abused like in music videos when women are dancing and then some men throw them money.

There are really more problems in this world that are need to be faced.

Jhudah There are a lot of problems and evil things in the world today. But, no one can write enough hubs to cover even a fraction of them. This is just a fraction of the problems women face, even in this country.

Mhatter99 You and I are having the same 'ism' then. After the surgery, I have problems with words. Not writing them, but saying them. Sometimes speech is a problem. I really do understand what you are writing about.

Jhudah: Those women are Paid. Those women line up for city blocks for the opportunity to be in one of those videos...

What is that video pointing too? A Subculture that does every thing you see in those videos... and allot of other stuff that is too illegal to even show in the videos.

Isms? Those Videos, like it or not... they point to a certain amount of reality... (or the fantasies about that reality) of the people making them.

I've spent part of my morning working on a Hub to answer a question about whether people have experienced prejudice, bigotry and/or stereotyping. I think it was your question; and although I'm not finished with what is turning out to be be a very long Hub yet, it attempts to answer your remark about "how many other isms there may be".

Your Hub about women is an excellent one; and as a woman (and once a girl) who has never been willing to accept what "the world" has in mind for/about girls and women, I've spent pretty much all my life fighting off more than one kind of "ism", but most often, sexism in one form or another.

One problem is that while some types of sexism is out there and easily seen by a whole lot of people, there's other types of it that are hidden and/or insidious; and if women, themselves, even mention it (much less try to fight it or refuse to allow themselves to be "Class B" people when it comes to equality and equal respect) they're likely to meet with hostility, contempt and/or at least scorn. So they learn to shut up and just find a way to live with whatever "treatment" they live with, because being seen and treated as "less" and keeping it to oneself is still better than trying to stand up for one's rights and equality and paying the price of bringing on the wrath and attempts to control that are brought on when someone who is seen as "less" dares to expect to be seen, and treated, as "equal".

Lisa HW thank you for your comment. Yes it is every where. some times it is even in the work place. It is supposed to be illegal there, but it is not. How many presidents CEOs of the company are women? There is still a glass window. Women can only go up so high. Men can always go higher. A hub even on this comment can be written, and so much more. Thank you again for your wonderful comment.

Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Here we find several things of interest:

1) God used a rib from Adams Side.. not a bone from his foot or his head that he should Lord over her or be under her... 2) That one was not complete without the other. 3) They were Help Mates... Made to compliment one another... Lets face it.. some people are not good at some things while others are natural at it. And it would also be rather difficult for a man to have children without the woman's help in that area as well... Or the reverse for that matter... and apart from the pain and responsibilities.. Maternity is a great desire for most women... And some women just want to keep giving birth... you might think them crazy.. but they love it... and love being the mommy of the house...

Michele, powerful article. These stats blow my mind. A very interesting article and topic. Awesome job on explaining it all and your great writing. I believe many women choose to speak up or leave such violent partners. Always seems like women like bad guys. It is just sad. If 1,181 call that love, they have issues. But sometimes, we hurt the ones we love the most. Great writing Michele.

It is a real shame with pornography in this country and I believe that in a way helps cause sex crimes on a larger scale and on a smaller one makes women think in the wrong terms of their body and their whole life is about sex or pleasing the opposite sex for their approval. It is a real shame. We do all want to be desirable but if our husband/ partner cannot accept us as we are then we need to think twice about that relationship. Sex is only a part of our life, it is not who we are. Your last statement shows how much the efforts women go to mean! We might want to get our priorities straight.

Human trafficking is extremely reduced in the western press. Truth is, every Ukrainian family knows someone who was abducted off the street, or who took a job in Turkey, Israel, S.Korea, or even the United States, and was forced into prostitution.

One of the 3 stipulations given by the E.U. to Turkey was that they combat the HUGE illegal human trafficking that goes on there. Even prisoners can be prostituted by guards.

Here in Modesto, the church has organized a 5K July 5th to raise awareness.

Michele Travis profile image

Michele Travis 4 years ago from U.S.A. Ohio Author

Man from Modesto I am very glad that has happened in Modesto, but how many other countries are following the same law? Not our country. I have no proof, but guards in prisons in this country are probably doing the same. Thank you very much for the information you wrote. I recommend people should read your hubs. They contain a lot of interesting information.

I agree with you on that and one mother I saw didn't have a daughter so she turned her boy into a drag queen, under ten years old competing along with the little girls and of course it has nothing to do with her. Guess she don't know about the milestone around the neck, and too bad because what the mothers are doing with their little girls is no better.

Michele... whether we like it or not, Sexism will exist as long as there is sex.

For better or worse we are as humans created in two types.. Male and Female. Reproduction, whether we like it or not is a driving force of our existence and the need to be sexually appealing and desirable is part of the woman's programming.

Commercialization of Sex while wrong... is as old as mankind...

Advertisements and media in general have almost no restrictions regarding Sexism because the lines between right and wrong are so vague... Where can the line be drawn... when you are talking about humanity itself? How to do you place limits on media when the stories told and drama that unfolds is merely the stories of real life people and some fantasies about things that could be?

Yet for all of that... we do have problems in society... certainly the merchandising trends have crossed the lines of decency.. Good hubs... Make People think!!!

Thanks for a Great Hub Michele...

I love re-visiting your hubs just to see what comments they generate, you have the knack for generating intelligent dialogues through your writing Michele this is a great asset. I would like to also thank Mr Maranatha for his use of the word "programming," in his comment this indicates an outside influence...women are not born believing that sexuality is as tool -the environment (s) they are exposed to have an effect this effect/environment (s) can be changed Adult responsibility lies in raising an awareness in women as well as men to perceive our worth (females) from our inside out not the reverse. I just love this hub Michele it got my brain-engine firing lol.

LauraD093 Thanks for re-visiting that is so nice. I agree with Mr Maranatha and programming because that makes a lot of sense. It is too bad that is happening so often in the entire world.

Hi M: You have created a hub-ism that should be roaring to the world the wrong you have sited …..but just like Libya there are ruthless men who have too much power. A great sight of what is wrong and men need to acknowledge their malignant involvement. Freedom and equality is a human right beyond gender. Power to equality and civil rights, where the colour of you skin has nothing to do with it but gender , that’s something else. Great Hubism now let’s get Libertiesm…..go equality!!

Just remember that sexism goes both ways, boys are raised with very strict and masculine "Boy Code." There are great feminist movements however there have not been that many masculine movements. Keep the young boys in your mind as well.

Michele truly an awesome hub! (all favoritism aside) There's another "ism" for your file. It saddens me to see the domestic violence not dropping in our country as it should. Numerous people I associate with have made this a major cause. Unfortunately each generation that comes along seems to bear more bitter fruit. My only suggestion would be adding a Domestic Abuse site for your future readers. Keep them coming I as always love your work.

I don't understand why I'm told things like this everyday. Yes, girls on tv are skinny and hot. That's what brings in sells. It brings in sells because a LOT of people like it. If your one that's not in the majority, tough. Same with porn. Oh no! people spending so much on porn these days! Again, cause people like it, obviously, and who is anyone to tell anyone else that that's sick, wrong, or whatever. I guess I just don't understand why people keep Pointing this out. No one tries to think of ideas to remedy this or anything, just notices human behavior and criticizes it. If a woman is doing the same job as a man and gets paid less then don't take that job. If all women did that then they'd find more jobs that are equal or jobs that weren't equal will realize this with loss of female emplyees that were good at their job. Not saying it would work but it's something at least, an idea.
