Freedom with A Rascal Scooter

Independent and freedom

Freedom

If you lost your mobility Rascal scooters will give you your freedom and independents back. One day in October 2001 it was a clear blue sky and warm day. It was a perfect day. Well, let me take you back.in July 25 2001 My father, a WWII veteran had open heart surgery with two valves replaced on the same date 13 years earlier my mother passed away. The surgery was a success. It was however going to be a long road to recovery. He was sent home and slowly it seem he was getting weaker. By the way that's when I came up with my name ,(Gatorstrong) I'll explain in another Hup. My father was only worried about one thing, if he would be well or strong enough to get his medal from WWII. You see our county we lived in, Gloucester County was honoring our vets from Vietnam, Korea and WWII. 300 veterans and countless friends and family would be at this event. At the time I worked at a company called Electric Mobility ,Later called The Rascal Co. We made electric Scooters and power chairs. My father, I don't believe was proud of me working there. He called it a fly by night company. My two sisters and brother were successful in their companies. Well the day was getting closer to getting his medal , my father didn't think he was strong enough to go to this event . I told him don't worry I'll get a Rascal scooter for that day and you will get that medal. The day came when I pickup my father with the Rascal in the van. We arrived early., but being early didn't matter it was packed with people. It was held at Gloucester County College. What a great event even vintage military planes flying above, remember this was one month after 9/11. Im sure those planes had to get special permission. Well ,we arrived at the gate. My father got a quick lesson on how to use the Rascal. Away he went, with a big smile on his face. The event lasted most of the day. He received his medal and a picture in the newspaper. As my Dad and I were leaving the area after he received his medal , he stop the Rascal .and said ," so this is what you do for a living, you help people get their life back you give them their freedom". I think for the first time he was proud of were I worked. As I looked ahead and saw my brother and two sisters I realize the companies they worked for couldn't do this one thing, get my Dad WWII medal. If you have a family or a friend who has problems walking don't leave them behind. Don't tell them they don't need it or they should exercise. Let them get their symbolic medal.

I was sitting at my desk one day and I got a call from our mobility center in California. Skip, who work there said he just got a call from the executives from the Seinfeld show and they needed a Rascal for their show.I was so excited that I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The little company from New Jersey is going to have one of their products on very popular show. I mention to a few people in the office and they thought I was joking.I was told the show purchase a Rascal and made a light proto type so George on the show could pick it up and carry it. I had over twenty four years at the Rascal Company, Not only I have this personal story but I know of many more. The Rascal scooter help many people. gain their independents. Many were trap in their own homes. The little things matter, even if it's just going out to get the mail. I remember my father in law the first time he tried a Rascal.he had a big smile on his face. in 1986 my father-in-law had a stroke he had problems walking the distance Every year we would go to the Jersey Shore. My father in law wanted to walk the boardwalk but know he just couldn't do it. My mother in law and his son didn't want him to use the Rascal they thought he would get dependent on it. I would explain every year the Rascal will give him Independence. So one year they finally agree to let him try it. I brought the Rascal with us on a trip to Wildwood, New Jersey. My father in law, for the first time in years was able to enjoy himself and was able to come with us on the boards and see his grand children go on rides.
