SHIP'S CARGO OPERATION GEARS - GANTRY CRANES AND CRANES WITH RADIAL HEAD

SHIP'S GANTRY CRANE

CARGO OPERATION GEAR :-

There are many ships in the world , which have been designed with a view to facilitate the cargo loading and discharging with that ship's own cargo operation gear , similarly there are many ships which have been designed "GEARLESS " and these GEARLESS type ship's use the port's cargo operation gear for which they pay very heavy charges to the port authorities.

Some of these cargo operation gears are as under :

  • SHIP'S CARGO GEAR :-
  • RADIAL CRANE WITH JIB
  • GANTRY CRANE
  • DERRICK

PORT CONTROLS ALSO USE THE SAME TYPE OF THE CARGO OPERATION GEARS FOR LOADING AND DISCHARGIN CARGO FROM THE SHIPS.

SHIP'S GANTRY CRANES :-

Following figures will show the Gantry crane fitted in a ship. These cranes are very flexible from the operation point of view. These cranes very easily travel from the forward to after part of a ship, on the laid down track ways.

Following are some general parts of a gantry crane :

  • Gantry arms
  • gantry legs
  • gantry sproket teeth head
  • wheels
  • spreaders
  • traversing trolley
  • hoisting and lowering head
  • hatch cover lifting base
  • hydrulic ramps
  • curtains

WHY TWO GANTRY CRANES ARE FITTED ONBOARD A SHIP ?

The above shown ship is fitted with two sets of gantry cranes. The main purpose of these dual cranes is to achieve the highest out turn rates in the minimum time. These two sets of the cranes can work simultaneously but on the two different cargo holds depending upon the size criteria of the crane and cargo holds. Best out turn is achieved when both the cranes are working well apart with ample clearance between them. Normally a ship owner would never like to keep any of gantry cranes idle during the port stay of the ship , reason being  the port charges increase unnecessarily because of the longer port stay.

GANTRY CRANE TRACKS

The above figures show the gantry crane tracks i.e. the platform on which the gantry crane runs.

These include the sproket teeth head tracks and the track way for the wheels of the gantry.

Above pictures show the people engaged in maintenance of the gantry tracks. Usually these tracks are greased up properly before and after the operation of the gantry crane. This routine maintenance keeps the tracks in good condition and gives them good life.

RADIAL HEAD CRANES :-

Above figure represents the radial head cranes with jib. This kind of the cargo operation gear is quite easy to operate because they are fixed in one place and only their head moves all round for the  cargo operation on the concerned cargo holds.
