All Opposition Parties Lose Their Deposits

All Opposition Parties Lose Their Deposits

Sankarankoil by-election results have come. The ruling AIADMK has won by a thumping margin of votes. Except AIADMK candidate, all the other political parties have lost their deposits. This has reinforced the confidence of the Tamil Nadu people on the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The result has also demonstrated that irrelevant issues raked up by the political parties will not be condoned by the people.

Meaningful Issues Were Neglected During Election Campaign

The DMK could have canvassed meaningful issues during the election. For example, the ruling party AIADMK raised the prices of essential items like milk, food, transport and power. There is a widespread power cut everywhere including the Sankarankoil constituency where the election was taking place. The power cut was administered upto fifteen hours every day. This not only affected the students and office goers, it affected industries which were forced to shut down. Had the principal opposition party DMK canvassed these issues during the election, it could have at least ensured that the margin of victory for the ruling party was not very large as is the case now.

DMK Demanded the Right for Other Castes to Wear Sacred Thread

Instead of relevant and powerful issues against Jayalalithaa, the DMK indulged in attacking the Brahmin community and its religious beliefs. The DMK leaders quoted EVR Periyar asking people to beat the Brahmins with chapels. People mistook these remarks as DMK meaning that the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa should be beaten with chapels as she belonged to the Brahmin community. The DMK leaders also ridiculed the religious practices of the Brahmins. The DMK leaders demanded that other castes should also be permitted to wear the sacred thread, which the Brahmins wear. This remark has only created ridicule for the DMK among the people. Even now there is no ban in the other castes wearing the sacred thread. There is no provision in the Indian Constitution or in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that only Brahmins should wear the sacred thread and others should not. By raking up such irrelevant issues, the DMK lost its appeal and let Jayalalithaa win by a handsome margin.

What Does Sankarankoil Election Results Convey?

MDMK Demanded Arrest of Rajapakse

MDMK also raised irrelevant demands. MDMK leaders wanted the Sri Lanka President Rajapakse to be arrested. They promised that if the MDMK was elected in the by-election in Sankarankoil, they will immediately arrest Rajapakse and hang him to death for his ‘crimes’ against the innocent Tamil people like Prabakaran in Sri Lanka. Prabakaran was running a terrorist organization LTTE in Sri Lanka and killing thousands of people. He was responsible for the brutal assassination of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumpudur in Tamil Nadu in 1991. But the MDMK leaders were calling Prabakaran as innocent. In any case, is it possible to arrest the head of a foreign country even if he has committed crimes in his country? MDMK leaders were not bothered about this aspect and kept on demanding arrest and hanging of Rajapakse. They thought perhaps that the people of Sankarankoil were idiots and did not know that it is impossible to arrest a foreign head of a State.

PMK Demands Rajya Sabha Seat for Anbumani

The PMK was not contesting in the election but one or two leaders were demanding Rajya Sabha member post to their leader Anbumani Ramadass. They were telling that milk and honey will flow in the streets of Tamil Nadu if Anbumani Ramadass was elected to Rajya Sabha. Sankarankoil by-election has nothing to do with Rajya Sabha election. But the PMK was raising such irrelevant demands during their election speech. The DMDK of Vijaykant was personally attacking Jayalalithaa. Their leaders stated that DMDK would emerge victorious over the AIADMK in the election. But they were proved wrong. DMDK emerged only as the fourth in the line up.

Congress Praises Rahul Gandhi and Karunanidhi.

The Congress leaders praised Karunanidhi sky high. Congress leaders stated that the Muslims and Christians lived in Tamil Nadu happily only because of Karunanidhi. The Congress leaders stated that it was Rahul Gandhi who spoke about reservations to the Muslim community in the recent UP assembly elections. The Congress leaders stated that in the next assembly elections in Gujarat due at the end of the year, Rahul Gandhi will come up with a suitable plan to attract the votes of Muslims in Gujarat and defeat Narendra Modi.

Communists Praise USA, Criticise China

The communists also indulged in irrelevant speeches. Communist leaders were praising USA and criticising China bitterly. They said that Narendra Modi was a communal man and praised USA for banning Modi from visiting USA. They however criticised China for inviting Modi to visit their country. By criticising China in Sankarankoil and appreciating USA sky high there, what the communists were gaining? The communists were also criticising the BJP for pulling down the Babri Masjid in 1992 and demanded justice. Communists praised the Congress party in the centre for its secularism and criticised the BJP for its communalism. In Sankarankoil by-election, issues like China, USA, Narendra Modi, secularism, communalism and Babri Masjid did not matter at all. Such irrelevant issues contributed to these parties losing their deposits in the Sankarankoil election. Jayalalithaa won by a huge margin because of the irrelevant issues raised by her opponents instead of attacking her government on valid reasons.
