Seal Team Six Strikes Somali Pirates

If you happened to be watching the State of the Union Address last night, you may have overheard the President praising his Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta; “Good job tonight, good job.” At the time we had no way of knowing the Commander in Chief was referring to the rescue of two hostages held captive by the Somali Pirates.

According to U.S. Officials, the raid took place under the cover of darkness, as most often do. The team assigned to the rescue mission parachuted from fixed winged aircraft. They then proceeded by foot to engage the target encampment.

The rescue team met strong resistance from heavy weapons fire as well as explosives. Upon removing the threat, the Seal Team secured the Hostages, leaving their 9 captors dead. The rescuers reported no injuries in the fray as they departed aboard U.S. Military Helicopters.

Ohio resident, Jessica Buchanan and a Danish Refugee Council member were kidnapped and held captive by the Pirates months ago.

"Jessica Buchanan was selflessly serving her fellow human beings when she was taken hostage by criminals and pirates who showed no regard for her health and well-being," he said. "As commander in chief, I could not be prouder of the troops who carried out this mission, and the dedicated professionals who supported their efforts."

The Somali Pirates are holding numerous hostages including an American Journalist captured this week.

Best wishes to you Joey. My advice is to start running if you haven't already. Keep your head up and your mouth closed. Beware of the garbage can alarm clock. Keep in touch, I was 17 when I joined up; USAF. Trust your instincts.

Honestly I agree with you and with me about to ship otu to bootcamp and starting to realize the opportuinities out there for me while im in. Without what the SEALs have done or what they do everything would be different around the world today.

This story has sparked a wide range of responses. All of which are welcomed. Indeed a hostage is a hostage. I would agree to do whatever it takes to resolve and prevent the conditions from reoccurring capebretonflynn.

i believe this talk, of piracy overseas, or far from us in an exotic way, is to bamboozle us from piracy at home. i live in owen sound, see my hub about canadian pirates. i all hailed pirate political group, because i thought they were more than thugs. proves not. seals for one hostage is appropriate?! can't believe u would say otherwise. yeah. yeah. my da was navy. he's gone. his friends did not pretend one hostage was not one hostage. and cape breton was blowing up! the island my ma was from. like i said he died. and he were not from the island. one hostage is a navy mission.

The War for Oil Monologues...Hmmm. Good Hub, good information. Definitely too much government secrecy, still I admire and am deeply grateful to the men (maybe women) who serve on Seal Team Six and other similar teams. Thanks for the article.

I keep hearing this war for oil monologue and I want to know where it all is and how it helped us at the gas pumps.

In California we are paying well over four dollars a gallon of gas.

Hard to tell what this is, since our government keeps so much information classified. Who to rescue and who not to rescue? Who influences the president to makes the decision to intervene and risk losing highly trained special ops forces?

Anything to divert attention away from the takeover of Ontario, the Ontario hostages, the Ontario pirates, the nuclear mass poisoning of 2009, and the ongoing electronic attacks. SEALS are awesome, none better to engage pirates and rescue hostages. Great article. Thanks.

I'll reluctantly weigh in, State of the Union address night,microphone picked up the comment,its just that;

I know there was a time when these operations were not made public...especially when successful. But times have changed. no on a multitude of levels it is not logical.

Watch the details change if your skeptical, like the Bin Laden details changed.

To answer your question, it is not irrational for your thoughts and doubt, then again...stay tuned Max41

What do you think? Could this be a possibility or is it irrational? I just don't see the logic of such action!

Why would the government deploy the seals for two hostages? How do they pick who to save, if it really happened? Most countries, included the U.S. will never risk such intervention! It is also said that few Americans are involved in those acts of piracy!

America is already militarily involved in a war against Somalia for their oil, nothing better than a rescue to justify their intervention there!
