Sexual Ideas Or Sex Between Ideas

OH BOY!

Kind of makes sense to me...

Did you know that ideas have sex? Many may never have heard of journalist Matt Ridley but you're about to. You see there was once this drop dead gorgeous idea who is sitting at the bar looking around at the prospects. Lo and behold, this glorious hunk of an idea man strides in, sits down next to her and introduces himself. They hook up and I'll be if 9 months later (give or take a few seconds, months or years you understand) out pops this brand new, shiny idea squalling its head off for attention. The birth of a new idea so to speak. As with all babies, this one has the best genes from its parents.

Now I didn't realize the magnitude of ideas having sex, much less giving a thought before to the concept. The outcome should result in people seeing something they've never seen before and maybe making the world a better place to live. But you see, the ideas have to have sex in order for them to create that offspring. That's how the world works.

Matt Ridley, a noted British journalist, had this to say about it, "Ideas spread through trade. And when they meet, they can mate, and you can produce combinations of different ideas. I think a good example is a camera pill, which takes a picture of your insides on the way through. It came about (during) a conversation between a gastroenterologist and a guided missile designer ... a process very similar to sex in biology, because through sex, genes meet and recombine, and you get new combinations of genes. That's what causes innovation in biology, and innovation in culture." Control yourself, this is the mating of ideas we're speaking of here and not the normal hanky-panky that is running through your twisted minds.

So following along here, lets take a look at how living standards have increased in, say, the last 4 decades. We have to make corrections for inflation, being what it is but the average American's income has increased somewhere in the range of 30-40 percent. At the same time, the average life span increased by 30% across the board. Seems like a fair trade to me. Then the question begs itself, "How did that occur and why?" Before we proceed though let me give you some bad news. The average American's income dropped by 6.7% during this "supposed" recovery Obama keeps telling us we're in.

Now back to the question. None of that progress occurred due to anything close to the actions of central planning. That isn't the American way. Obama wants it to be otherwise, but that's not the way we operate. So what has kept it going? Lets try the spontaneity of the free market system which dictates who the winners and losers are rather than Big Brother telling us what is best for us. According to Ridley even when dumb people have idea sex the results are much more satisfying than those produced by an Einstein of a central planner. I'd have to agree having known some pretty dumb people along my path of life.

Here's a Ridleyism worth examining, "If you look at human history ... lots of people in a room who are talking to each other, however stupid they are, can achieve a lot more than a lot of clever people in the room who never talk to each other. So it's not individual intelligence that counts in how well a society works. It's how well people communicate and exchange ideas with each other." Then look at the gridlock we see being practiced by our dumb as dirt, career politicians and is there really any wonder why we're in the mess we're in? Their ideas need to have some serious sex but...

As a child of the 60's and 70's, I can relate to some of what I see these days. There are still pessimists galore. Back then we heard the lament of grown ups about how we just didn't understand how things really worked. They sound like politicians today telling us that we just don't understand how Washington works even though we do and don't like what we see. If you grew up back then you know exactly what I speak of - world famine was rampant and there was no cure, oil was finite and going to run out before we did, and the population explosion was going to be catastrophic. Has any of that occurred as we speak? Why hasn't it?

Give some credit to human ingenuity and the optimists that walk among us. Using ingenuity and good old sex between ideas things sometimes get cheaper, more abundant and in some cases much cleaner than what we had before. Unleaded gas versus leaded gas comes to mind. ATM machines tickle my intellect even though according to our President they were a bad idea that resulted in people being unemployed. So in four decades we have become a lot more healthy, life is cleaner as is the planet earth. Instead of gloom and doom the earth has become a better place despite those who want to cram central planning down our maws.

The human spirit, good old fashioned ingenuity and a strength of character that allows one to be all they can be without putting their paws out for a handout seems to be the ticket to the future. The lack of jobs seems to be a concern to many. I suggest that the federal government get the heck out of the way and let those of us who know which end is up make the necessary corrections to society, the marketplace and good old fashioned American ingenuity. It worked before and it will work again. Lets have a period of "free love" between ideas and see what happens. Now there's a new idea!

I'm just sayin...

As always,

The Frog Prince

Great post Frog. Central economic planning never works, because the planners are too far from the myriad transactions that must take place for innovation and efficient transactions to take place. The major issue is that central economic planning interferes with the free market "auction" rates for consumer prices, interest rates, and labor, leading to misallocation of resources. As a result, aggregate GDP is significantly reduced. The upper echelon in these socialist governments than enact high taxes, so they and their favored crony capitalists can live like kings on what little is produced. The end result is that most people live in poverty. You can see this pattern in every country with central economic planning. And the freedom once lost is nearly impossible to regain; those benefitting from the centrally planned regime have too much power and taxpayer funded income to lose. So they build large police forces relative to the size of the population, outlaw citizen firearm ownership, and prohibit all dissent, even peaceful verbal disagreement with the government. I'm sad to say this is the road the US has been heading on for about 120 years. While Obama is sort of the apex so far of American socialism in government, in truth this has been an insidious process that started just before the turn of the 20th century. The primce culprit has been Tenth Amendment breaking by the federal government. Usurpation of state and individual powers by the federal government has not only led to crushing federal debt (enforcement expense and federal social system liabilities), but also a pervasive national regulatory state where the government in effect decides what businesses will succeed (picking winners in terms of both business sectors, as well as specific companies). Such crony capitalism, fed by corporate and special interest contributions, is really nothing more than a thinly disguised version of pure socialist corporatism. The wrapping paper is a little different, but the "gift" (loss of economic liberty and the opportunity to prosper) is the same. In both cases, the only ones who make out really well are top government elites, and those in the private sector that are very effective at doing their bidding.

What a great idea..ideas giving birth to ideas. Now that is the true definition, spirit and beauty of free enterprise. Too bad we have an administration that wants to do all the thinking for us and we can see how well that's working out. Up ,interesting, useful and awesome.

But Frog, we need Central Planning to tell us to get together and have great ideas, you can't have rampant unprotected idea sex either, or you risk spreading ideas that threaten CP. The best way to encourage proper creativity is to get the RIGHT people together and force them to have idea sex so that CP will prosper. The mixing of ideas from different career fields is an abomination and must be stifled. At the very least, we should only use sign language and tape our mouths shut! That's definitely approved by the CCCP - er, Central Planning I mean.

Mr. Mark-

I don't think most Americans know what CCCP stands for. They're either too young or the actions of the Whiner in Chief leave them w//a false sense of security.

Just this morning the idiot further decimated our Armed Forces. I thought Leon Panetta was going to break into tears!

As ever-

Fascinating topic, Frog, idea sex. As a manager I always praciced it with my teams since I believe that all of us are smarter than one of us. A concept that Obummy cannot seem to grasp.

Love your line of reasoning, as usual, Frog, Dear!

It seems that the ideas aren't even 'looking under each others' hoods'...! Voted UP & across the board, mar.

Not precisely a new concept--"The propagation of ideas" as a term has been around for a while. Ant then there's the reference to a "fertile mind" which at least implies that ideas have been fooling around in there...

...but, nonetheless, a GREAT Hub. You've taken the subject of the mating of ideas to a whole new level, as did the Tea Party when it "exploded" from nothing to a nation-changing force in a matter of months.

Voted Up and Everything.

34TH - honestly, I had to look it up to make sure. But I'll never forget that birthmark nor Reagan's words: "Gorby, tear down that wall." (Forgive me if I didn't get that quote exactly right, but the act itself is burned into my mind).

I've been preoccupied by a little thing called work and life right after I wrote this so first:

jim - I take that compliment in the highest regard. I remember back when when you told me that you couldn't write. Indeed you can my friend and I value that too.

drbj - You know what my background is so I learned many decades ago the value of team work and the fertilization of good ideas.

Maria - You have to have a "hood" to look under in order to do so. Our politicians, be what they are, have lost the ability to spawn good ideas. Money now drives their train and that needs to be changed. The pursuit of power sometimes involves greed. We're now seeing it up close and personal.

Lynn - A concept yes, a new idea? No, this nation was really founded on that concept and somehow we have drifted too far away from it. Somehow we have allowed some pretty bone-headed career politicians to "dictate" our destiny. Something to think about.

BPOP - Well said. What perplexes me right now is that far too many people want the "government" to supply their ideas for them. Really? Since when have a pack of self serving jackals been the idea idea factory?

Alexander - All one needs to do is take a close look at Europe and see what the long time results of central planning will yield. Or look at the dissolution of the USSR for another lesson. Is that what the people of this nation want for their nation? Freedom isn't free, nor are all the freebies our government officials use to buy votes aren't free either. Somebody is always picking up the tab. Right now we are past ourselves into future generation's that we spawned and will continue to spawn. Sad state of affairs that people's worlds have become all about themselves without regard for those yet to come.

Fred - What a novel idea. Lets try something different because this sure isn't working. The idea that they keep trying to reinvent the wheel, when the past wheel was working just fine, is an enigma to me but not really when I think about. Might have just spawned a new idea for a new Hub.

I'm mortified that WE will be the first generation to hand our Country over to our children in worse shape than when we received it.

34th - But that's exactly what we're doing and then we keep electing the lesser of two evils to perpetuate the system that they have put in place and are resistant to changing. That will be some "real change" if the power of the American human spirit has anything to do with it or means anything to the people of this nation. It's time to start breeding new ideas and the same stale faces can't do that. They have shown us that they just aren't capable of really representing our nation and our way of life.

A good eye opening Hub.......it IS up to us to fix this mess!

I think we are on the verge of something BIG...and it can be good or it could be bad....but BIG.

I'm betting on something GOOD, because I think there are MORE out there that are ready for some real change!

Great Hub!

The Frog Prince 4 years ago from Arlington, TX Author

CMerritt - I have the same sense that you do. We now have a Chief Executive officer in this nation who has no regard for the US Constitution. He has vowed to end around Congress to get his way. That completely throws the checks and balances that document dictates as our law. Is that acceptable? Is the shredding of the US Constitution acceptable to the majority of Americans? If it is, then something BIG should be expected. People need to start paying attention to what the hell is going on, just as the colonists did when they had to face down a tyrant. It isn't really a new idea but an old one that maybe time will cause us to take pause and think about.

I tire of the Dems this, or the Repubs that. This is about "We, the People..." We need to get back to that and quickly.

Great! The best yet. Thanks for sending me here.

I very much have to agree with 34th. What have we done to our country or should I say allowed to be done and now the mess our children must grow old too.

Hi Frog,

I kind of knew this was not going to be a hub about sex..lol but I promised I would try to comment.:) This is my thoughts..I am following the debates and see alot of laughing, fake smiles, and alot of empty words. Why are they laughing at each other in the debates concerning serious issues? Nervous energy? I am listening but I guess I am not hearing very well..Tough times are ahead..sex or not..we better be well protected..:)
