Shoplifter Methods of Theft

How do they get away with it?

How do these people steal, is what we ask ourselves. The first method is what we call a booster. Basically, a booster is someone who uses an object or bag to steal. They could use anything that you could place merchandise inside of.

Generally these individuals travel in groups. Amongst the group each person will have a specific job. Example: one person will be a blocker, or some people say distraction. This person will walk around the store and draw the attention of employees by acting suspicious. While this person is creating a distraction there will be someone else who is gathering merchandise to steal. These two people generally stay in touch via cell phone. This way they each know where security is. Once the blocker or blockers have the attention of everyone the real thief can now take what they want.

Once the merchandise is concealed the individual will either leave the store immediately or they will purchase something small and then exit.

Another method of boosting would be the person who collects numerous shopping bags from the establishment which they like to steal from. Then, this person will go shopping as normal. Once they collected everything that they need they will pull out the empty bag and fill it. Once the bag is full exiting the store is pretty simple, since they already have a bag which generally means that they purchased something.

I can shoplift almost anything and have never been caught in my

life .you just have to analyze peoples preconceived notions and adjust to the appropriate body language and mannerisms. being able to deactivate or block rfid tags is important as well or successfully remove without damaging the product. make sure at one moment or another completlty conceal part of body from security instuments or people. misderection is also a key part of shoplifting. I have stolen up to 8 or 9 cds at a time with nothing in my hands pockets no jacket tightly fitting pants a form fitting shirt and not as much as a glance in my directions. there are many other things I can get that most people wouldn't dare, fuck a can steal x box 360 games, 300$ to 500$ jackets, i mean anything.... period! all why maintaining the persona of a typified intellectual and the charisma of a james bond . i can get what i want like I have money its all about breaking down the mentality of this fucked up world and using it to your advantage. a magicician of Manipulation is perfect way to describe my type of theiving

ChristaBella 8 years ago

TIP 1: You're so right about the whole body language/confidence thing- I've gone into a store, grabbed something that nobody would have the balls to walk out of a store with- DVD players, XBoxs (even if they had to unlock it out of a case for me)- put it in my cart, & straight WALK THE FUCK OUT THE STORE, waving- "bye- have a great day!" nobody says a word- they're like- she MUST of paid for it- who the fuck would just walk right out the store with an XBox, WAVING to everyone- haha- being a cute female also helps...alot

TIP2:Like i said- confidence. Purchasing items (not small shit like gum) really helps- but for junkies, this tip is difficult, as they usually have NO money to buy anything...except gum- which is why, if you want to avoid suspicion, you need to buy things- a few things- they can still be cheap things- most amatuer theives are nervous & want to get the hell out of there- there's less suspician on the one who is not only willing to purchase items, but who is also willing to stand there in line, go through the whole process, coming in close contact with a clerk...etc etc- all the while standing there nonchalantly

-------> addition to this tip: i've also stood in line with a cart full of shit, purchased most of the stuff in the cart, & but hold a few aside, telling the clerk "you know what, i need to put these on hold at customer service" - pay for everything, get my reciept, put all the bags in the cart- the more, the better- leave the unpaid merchandise in the cart- at the front- whereever- but not in a way that looks like you're trying to conceal them- remember- confidence is key- leave them out in the open- like what- haha- then walk out the door, w/ reciept in hand in view. Again, it looks as if you've paid for the stuff but didn't want it bagged- and again, why would someone confidently stroll past everyone without flinching if they have stolen merchandise- ok- and you can throw in another wave "bye! have a nice day!" here too...hahahaha

Just trying to do business 8 years ago

Some people have integrity and work for what they have. It's unfortunate that they pay higher prices to make up for what low life, slackers will steal from a business. Businesses have to pass on the losses in higher prices because there is very little mark up on most product. The shoplifters are just not smart enough to understand that concept. All they understand is "look cool and get one over on you". Then they take the goods to their fence for the drug money. What a life of fame!

All I have to say to you over confident thiefs is you will get caught it is only a matter of time I have arrested many different types that swore up and down they would never get caught. Also it is you type of people that I love to catch as you think you can't be caught I have a 100% prosecution rate and have not lost a case yet

Joe 8 years ago

Tony,

I agree with you. I've always kind of enjoyed catching these types. Funny thing is, they are the ones who can't believe they've been caught, and they sure don't have that confidence when they are cuffed and have a criminal record to look forward to. Personally, I have no sympathy for these so-called professional thieves, who think they should get theirs at the expense of others.

Sam 8 years ago

Everyone gets caught in the end!!! Simple... I've arrested different kinds of people for shoplifting from the young juvenilles who pocket cosmetic items that they cant afford so they can be like their big sister, to drug dealers who have stolen petty items that they could clearly afford with large amounts of cash in their possesion, professional shoplifters who have consealed small and large items at the till point in full view of everyone whilst being served by another member of staff, elderly people who steal because they thought they wouldnt get looked at twice, drug addicts/users and even people who have worked for the goverment... Shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes but the 1 thing they all have in commen is, they all get caught in the end... You can be as confident and pollite as you like you WILL get caught eventually... And if your stealing from a business for a while without getting caught and security staff finally find the find you and figure the way your working, regaurdless if its your 1st time getting caught, if the evidence suggests you have stolen more than what you've been caught with, your house can and will be searched by police and you will be charged with any goods that are found in your house causing your 1st "minor" offence to be increased to a major offence more than likely you ending up spending the night in a cell and up infront of a judge in the morning instead of next to your own bed!!! Be warned people! You shoplifters might be getting better, but us Security and Loss Prevention staff are getting alot better too

Why not shoplift? Especially if you're in a bad situation financially. I'd avoid small shops, but large corporate chains? The CEO of WalMart doesn't need another gold doorknob or Mercedes Benz.

i used to shoplift from walmart and i got away with subwoofers flatscreens etc. but then when you get good you loos the thrill and i stoped and never got caught so not everyone gets caught

That Guy 8 years ago

Like maurice said i'll wear tight cloths and carry something like a large watter bottle (obviously nothing clear) for stuff like energy drinks and i can even fit some shirts inside mine, and for cds ill use a hollow book. The idea is to put your item in something that people won't suspect or can't legally search, be creative in your carrier and let them know they can't search your belongings. I always steal from large buisnesses because they have plenty of money and because they're easyer to steal from, always look out for cameras, suspicious eyes, rfid tags, and be confident. If things look too risky put the item back and try again, happy hunting.

(please comment on anything i left out or creative methods)

To tony joe and sam. you enjoy catching these people because you have a decent paid job and a home and probably even families. some of these folks who do this are desperate and regardless of what the media says the benefits people wont help them out. what would you do if you were homless addicted to drugs and had nothing but the dirty clothes you stand up in. i know, before you say it that some of them put there selfs there and i would say your right, but have you ever tried to get out of a hole like that. some of these guys and girls, as i said before are desperate, and not for trainers which is a popular myth. its normally for food and drugs. again have you ever tried giving up an addiction. some folks like the professionals, who do it for kicks, then i understand you wanting to arrest them they do it for kicks. but when someone is stealing for food then perhaps its time to help your fellow human out no matter what his crime(apart from sexual crimes). i must state that i am no shoplifter and nor have i ever been. i have a large family and a nice home with a good career and have never been in trouble with the authorities of any kind. just so nobody says "look another criminal sticking up for a criminal". come on people, when we lose our sense of responsibility for mothers were all doomed. just my 2p worth. elma.

i've found several merchants who do not have the security gates at the door. i usually hit several stores a day. i can get out around 14 to 20 dvds at a time. i wear a tight windbreaker under my winter coat. i usually make around 100-150 a day. back in the early 2000's when used dvds brought more money i was making 300 dollars a day working around 4 hours. but it takes a good vehicle and being able to drive to different towns..............it works

in terms of shoplifting ive done it several ways, but usually ive shoplifted for myself, (clothing mostly)What I normally do is bring a scizzor in my bag, i take small items of clothing and hide them under large items of clothing on hangers. Thus six items look like three, then ill take a couple of regular items and altogether bring in 5 items when I really have eight. In the dressing room I choose which three I want to steal then I cut off the sensors (i just sew them up at home, it looks almost exactly the same!) and walk out of the store no harm done. Im wondering - this method is rarely mentioned in terms of shoplifting and I really dont want to get caught.Have you found people who shoplift like this? How did they get caught because so far it seems foolproof.

Shop lifters suck u all get caught and when u try to fight u get your tails handed to you with out a doubt. And you over confident cute girls are not slick cause we watch for that FYI. Guys who come in dressed nice, DEAD GIVE AWAY especially if your a tweaker. And just cause u buy something does not mean we are not watching you. Thieves ar POS.

Nicole 7 years ago

Okay all you people hating on shoplifters really need to get over yourselves. People usually do it because they don't have the money too. Honestly do you know how rich Wal-Mart and Target and all these places are? They could have 10 shoplifters a day stealing stuff and I seriously doubt it hurts their pockets one bit. We are not POS's and honestly hot girls can get away with murder hunny ;) TRUST me when I say it's all in what we wear and how we look. Shoplifting is an art and some people are really good at it while others aren't, and those are the ones that get caught.

NeverCatchMe 7 years ago

Hello ladies and gentlemen, i am going to give you a bullet proof way to steal, literally almost anything you want from walmart. This is not a joke. This will work 100% of the time. As a former employee of walmart i would just like to inform you all that this is possible, and done daily by millions of people around the world. America is low on money, and high on product, hence the high shoplifting rate. Is shop lifting nessesary? No, should it be done? Yes.

Easy step by step solution to getting anything from small tech items, to 500$ blue ray players.

Step 1: You must first go to a store where there is two entrances. This makes walmart, and other large chain stores an easy mark.

Step 2: Now i would like you to get a cart, and begin strolling through the store as if you are a normal customer(at this point you still are)

Step 3: Now i would like you to Find whatever you want to steal. Now remember when you are stealing. Sensors are a NO NO. any item in the tech department will have a sensory with a detachable drawstring around it. Making it seemingly obvious if its sensored. Food is EXTREMLY easy to steal, i will not let any of my readers go hungry, i promise.

Step 4: Now after you have all the things you would like to steal, i would like you to go to the shortest line, and i want you to buy the items. (Keep reading this will make sense) After you purchased the items this will give you a valid recipt, and also it will deactivate the sensor in the box of any tech. walk out to your car, and put the deactivated tech item in the front seat

step 5: Now go eat lunch, come back an hour later. (This helps to go at about 11:30, then go eat, and come back at 12:10 when all the regulars are on lunch break.) Make sure to bring the item in a cart and get it tagged by the greeter

step 6: Now before returning the tech item, you will need to get another cart, and go get a duplicate of whatever you just bought. After you have your cart loaded up walk out the OPPOSITE exit you walked in earlier, making sure to not ssee the same greeter again, it will make it very obvious of your theft if you do.

Step 7:Take the things you just stole to your car, and lock it up

Step 8:Now Go back inside and find your cart and return the items.

Step 9:Make sure to return the FIRST ITEM you bought, otherwise the serial numbers on the item, and the recipt wont match.

Alright some quick rules.

NEVER steal

Routers

CD's

VIDEO GAMES

Basically anything with sensors.

Wraping sensors in tin foil DOESN't WORK, I PROMISE. The alarm will STILL sound. Guarenteed, its a myth that the method works.

Also ALways be confident.

Always look down(so cameras cant see face)

Always cover license plate

Always say yes if an employee staff member asks if you need help looking for something

Always Act friendly.

Never admit to stealing.

If by any RARE chance that a person does see you pocketing something from their store, when you walk away from them, if they TOUCH you, fall down act as if you're hurt, Not only will you get a very nice settlement eventuelly, but no shoplifting charges will fall on you. Walmart will wish they had let you walk out the door.

Alright guys hope this helped

Message me with any questions, or comments at Hollister0807@hotmail.com

Also i have never been caught, and retain around 500$ a day doing this. I will help anyone and everyone in this time of need.

Loove, Rodney.

People steal for all kinds of reasons. I can understand it when someone is hungry, but stealing out of greed or for profit is what you go to hell for period. An all you people saying it doesn't hurt anyone its a big francise store your stupid. It raises costs of products for consumers an eliminates bonus checks for hard workin employees. Not to mention the people that are hurt when the shoplifter trys to escape knocking over old ladys punchin pregnant girls high speed chases. An since many of these folks use drugs this enables them continue to hurt themselves an people around them.So go circle jerk with your friends an talk about how cool you are that you stole a dvd.

Dawson 7 years ago

i only steal from places like walmart, places that overcharge and can afford to lose boatloads of merch like a drop in the very deep bukcet, i have to admit though i think i have a type of OCD that causes me to want to steal. liftin shit is fun tho, im a pro at stealing sunglasses, i mean i got it down to an art, swipe, put it on my collar, walk out, no problemo ,easy.

Dyno 7 years ago

Sensors mean NOTHING. Simply buy a cheap dvd for about five bucks. Now you are free to take anything small with a sensor. If the door beeper goes off simply show your cheap dvd and they think that is what set it off. Works EVERY TIME.

For me, it's the thrill of beating the system that gives me the rush, being able to manipulate and outsmart people and systems, like 'Tony' and 'Joe' up above. Not just in thievery, basically any other system you can think of. It's my thing.

And while you can stereotype us, and say that we all get caught, we don't all get caught. WE, referring to those who take thievery seriously, don't get caught. It is when people get lazy and sloppy with their lifts that they get caught.

"A better lock makes a better thief."

hah a lot of this advice is good, basically what me and my friends do, is go to the massa bunch of stuff from like walmart or something and shove it up your sleeves and in your boots.( while no one is looking like when you are turning a corner or saying my pants need to be tucked in more) then when you leave the store find a bathroom that is in the mall take the stuff out of the packages, put it in your bag continue doing this, then a few hours later when the people have changed, go back and do the same thing, works evertime :D

Hi,

I used to shoplift for about 2 yrs.I visited the same store like once every 3 months. This time I had no idea that they had security systems and alarms installed.I bought a few soaps/shampoo and a hair cream. This cost me about 1.5$.I however stole things worth 5.5$.As I exited after paying, the security guard approached me and took me to an isolated room.He hit me too.I had to pay them 40$ otherwise they would call the police.

Moral of the story--Dont Shoplift.

I've stolen laptops througout the years. I mainly steal groceries and hair products on a consistent basis for me and my babygirl. My son's get the newest gameboys--I go in the store, pick out the one's I want, watch what cash register they bring them to, and then I wait for that cashier to either help a customer or leave her station. I then grab the boxes, swipe them across the magnetic pad that's on the couter top, bag it in my bag and then I'm out the store. When my school kids need school supplies, I go in and fill two booksacks with whatever will fit, they I use a store bag to put them in and wait for the greeters to get busy checking folks with baskets full of stuff, and then I walk out. When I make groceries, I steal the expensive stuff and just buy the cheap stuff by doing a "drop" into a special hanbag I stole from another store that turn out to be perfect for "lifting". When I need shoes, I wear flip flops, pick out the shoes I want, pretend like I'm trying them on, then I slip my flip flops into my bag and leave. The drugstore items are strictly bags for me. I shop for what I want and then leave it in a nearby isle. I then go and pick up my prescriptions. I usually as for an xtra bag with an excuse about needing it to put the empty paper bags from the prescritons from. Then I go to the isle where I left them and fill up my bag and exit the store with my prescription receipt in my hand as if I just paid for the items at the pharmacy counter. I also look for opportunities when sales staff is talking or laughing. One worker was supposed to be restocking, and she left the laptop case unlocked. I took five laptops, went too the bin section, but the boxes in a big bin, went to the front of the store, waited until the greeter started talking to her friend, and simply walked out. I also carry an array of cutting devices--everything from scissors, to box cutters, ratchet pruners, and box cutters. That way I can get into any package in the store.

i stole from a best buy 7 or 8 times until once they caught me. i was taken to a small room, where a guy was asking me stupid questions like why were you trying to steal, etc. they didn't ask for my name and i told them i didn't have any ID, but i'm afraid that they had hidden cameras or something that they could've used to take a picture of me or something, so they still know what i look like. they told me to not come back to the store, but i don't know if they're just trying to scare me or something. if i go back after a month or two, do you think they'll still remember? also as i was being escorted out of the store they saw my car, so they might've recorded the license plate too. if i return to the store should i go about looking differently, such as different haircut, glasses, or anything like that?

Bring it on Tony and Joe. $36000 in and no ones got me yet. It's just like everything else. The strong survive and the weak don't.

Look, people are going through rough times. I agree that stealing things just because you're greedy makes you no better than the corporate giant you're stealing from. However; those of you who think all shoplifters are scum, I recommend you take a step down from your high horse and observe our world. Yes, you work for your money. Same is usually the case with shoplifters, but they're busting their a5s making minimum wage..barely able to survive. Yes, there are SOME scumbag thieves who do it just for pride and greed..but that probably makes about 5% or less of shoplifters.

I read this whole post and I appreciate the mix of opinions on the whole shoplifting topic. Just because a person steals doesn't mean they're selling the merch for drugs although it is a possibility. I like the different methods people say they use for stealing and catching. Whether they're true or not they give us noobies prospective on where to start. Respect local business and take from the rich.

im a drug addict and ive been shoplifting for some time now to fund my habit. shoplifting is easy if u know what u are doing u will not have to work another day in ur life. watch the staff (not obvioulsy) its easy to see if they are onto u check where the cameras are try to avoid lifting right in front of one but 9 times out of 10 noones watching that camera. act normal and confident, get wateva u want, bring pliers, scissors to cut off magnets and tags, sometimes buy something not always esential if ya broke ur broke. target big companys they wont miss what ya get. security guards are NOT allowed to touch you that IS assault. fuck the guys on this page thinking they can catch us u guys are catching amateurs that will soon grow to pros and ul never get them. yeah ive been done a few times and im going back to shops where i have been caught and walking out with over 100$ of goods every time. so security guards get fucked and learn from this u muthafuckas better just sit ur fuckn asses down and not even attempt to stop me because if you do try and you try physically apprehend me i will cause you physiacal severre pain i dont give a fuck if ur 10 times the size of me i do not care for security guard "heroes" so all u people like me keep going hard noone should ever go hungry or hang out for drugs EVER!

happy shoplifting

semi-retiered-shoplifter 5 years ago

I used to either shoplift, or act as a distraction on a daily basis. we would go in to a big supermarket, one of us wearing a backpack that was stuffed with newspaper so it looked full, and fill up a basket with eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatos, orange juice, and bread, plus other stuff we didn't want to shoplift. then we found an empty aisle, and one of us stood between the camera and the person doing the actual stealling pretending to look at a multi pack of crisps or something. whilst this was happening, whoever had the bag would take the newspaper out and kick it under a shelf before filling the bag from the basket, and zipping it back up. Then the one of us without the bag would get a phone call (it was actually an alarm set to go off exactly 6 minutes after we walked in) and anyone in earshot would hear about how someones grandad had fell down the stairs, and hospital, important, need to go now, forget the shopping etc. and we just walked out, one of us on the phone, the other giving the basket to the guard and apologising. then we went back home and had a full english breakfast that hadn't cost us a penny! In the afternoon we'd go too another supermarket or 2, and rob stuff to sell, using the same method. we took stuff like steaks, joints of meat, legs of lamb, all sorts of stuff. it all ended up being sold in the pub for half what it would cost in store, and we made a comfortable living off it. in fact, we made more than the security gaurds payed to stop us! That's fair when you think about it, because they didn't stop us, so didn't deserve to be on more money than us. Of course, all good things come to an end, and eventually i got evicted from the building we lived in at the time, and now after thinking about my life and where i was going, I'm at university. Last week I shoplifted some chocolate, just to prove to myself that I've still got the balls for it. this week I shoplifted Nicotene patches because I'm trying to quit smoking. BTW, I'm not a heroin addict or anything, I smoke weed and one rare ocasions I sniff coke, but I don't have a problem, or addiction. it's been 4 or 5 days since I last had a spliff, and a couple months since I last did coke. I don't crave them. I'm not shaking on the floor and vomiting. the only thing I crave right now is a cigarette, and that's because I haven't had one since last Tuesday, because I'm trying to quit. I shoplifted because I was poor, and couldn't find a job, and trust me I tried. Also once I was good enough at it I shoplifted for profit, and I don't feel guilty about it. NO REGRETS. Much Love :)

Open up a few old hardrives and remove the magnets. The magnets remove the security tag by attracting the inner ball bearings - this unlocks the mechanism; releasing the pin from the spring.

step by step instructions:

Or purchase a security tag remover online (100% legal)

Stealing is FUN!!! 5 years ago

ok, the biggest tip i would give to everyone is that DO NOT put any item that you are going to steal in your bag or purse that you are wearing. it is ILLEGAL to refuse a bag check and if you do refuse, they have the right to force you into checking it. another thing, any item that's over $20 and/or in a hard case, most likely there is a security tag. i suggest you open the box/container to remove the tag because i didn't notice it one time and on the way out the thing beeped. i had to run away not to get caught. so be smart, leave the box and the tag in the store.

Why are the AP people posting on this so overly confident and overzealous about it? It's kind of funny, everyone gets caught, if they're stupid, yes. First of all, you can't touch somebody (in my state at least) until they leave the store WITH merchandise. Yes, I've had close calls. Only twice in three years though. And both times, I just walked around until I wasn't followed, dumped the merchandise, and then let them search me as I leave the store. See, in this period of Obamanomics, being a felon for a minor drug crime, it has been impossible to find a real job. I put out over 600 or so applications in a 6 month period before I simply gave up, and picked up this job. I used to be addicted to heroin, but I completed my probation, and this has been paying my bills; rent, phone, gas, insurance, food, etc. I'm not doing it to support a habit, I'm doing it to support a life that America won't give me a legitimate chance to support. When some AP person does finally catch me, IF they do, I'll shake their fucking hand, and then proceed to leave. You can't hold me, unless you're a licensed peace officer, and I'll immediately get my lawyer on the phone and bring up assault and kidnapping charges. Police response time is usually 5-10 minutes, which is ALWAYS enough time to get out of dodge. It's just too easy. Until they change the laws and let the AP people assault thieves, there is no winning for them. I hope I can get a real job someday, but corporate America has made it impossible for someone with even a minor offense to get a job, so fuck it. I'm not going to just roll over and die.

I'm 13 and i shoplifted almost every month at the same target. I think it's the most simple thing i've ever done. We sold gum at our school for $1/pack and so we would just take 2 3 packs of every gum assortment and like 5 boxes of the 15pack gums, and we would nonchalantly walk out with rootbeers and redbulls in hand. A couple close calls with the security here and there, only asked us if we needed any help. In turn, we asked him where the [insert random cooking spice] was and where we could find it. In turn, he would escort us to the place and when he found it, he would give it to us, and we'd be on our merry way.

Very interesting, intriguing thread...I'm enjoying reading about all of the different methods shoplifters use. I've been a shoplifter for 13 years, but have only been caught 3 times. I'm actually on probation as we speak (until September). I have stolen hundreds of dollars worth of clothing, shoes, jewelry, various electronics (including flat-screen TVs, PS3s, blue-ray DVD players), home décor (including curtain rods, curtains, massive area rugs), etc., etc.; the list goes on and on. Every 2 months, I go to a "certain store", fill a cart to the brim with groceries, then walk out like I own the place. Personally, I think there are two main reasons why I don't get caught. 1) I don't "look" like a typical shoplifter. I'm a 30-year old, well-groomed female that dresses nicely. 2) Confidence. I rarely conceal items. Depending on where I'm doing the lifting from, I either carry items or put them in a cart. Like another poster said earlier, no one suspects someone walking out of a store confidently, with a cartful of items. You have to be confident or you'll either look suspicious or you'll get caught. I've walked out the door with items that have sensors attached to them...I've learned that the wall-alarm things at the entrance/exits at "certain stores" must be there to scare shoplifters.

Shoplifting is so natural to me now that I've done it for so long...yes, I recognize that it's s problem and that I don't take it nearly as seriously as I should...I think of it as an addiction. Once you've started, it's seriously hard to stop.

Thought id put in my 2 cents.. I usually wear tight boxer briefs and at the right moment stuff it securely right below my scrotum. Security searches bags purses but not ur underwear.

1234 5 years ago

So if I made this thing where i sewed a large ziploc bag into my boxers and jeans so that nobody can see the bag there because it is covered by my jeans. Will this work for shoplifting? can i legally be searched there or can they only ask me to turn out my pockets?

Just wondering..Kinda bored so came up with it haha. I don't shoplift and never will shoplift.

The problem with theft is not really that its 'such a big issue'. It is because it is treated as such a minor issue in western nations, that a man who steals a loaf of bread will almost certainly get a away scot free even if caught by store security ensures a special notion that all christian nations hold dear, that we love our fellow man. That the law applies to all, even the fool using this to steal xbox's, does not make him/her smart, it means that they dont see what liberty they have. Try getting caught for petty theft of an xbox in Saudi Arabia, see what happens to you then. They have way lower levels of petty crime, for good reason. They force citizens into a punishment that is merciless. I have caught all types of people all wealth brackets all walks of life, few have been punished by the law and of those that were few severely. We dont value 'things' as a society, we value life, we love life because our nation is christian. God Bless America and Ireland.

Shoplifting is perhaps one of the most addicting things I've ever done. I've been caught a few times (most of us have because we run into the problem of getting over confident, but put back in our place.) my tips are ALWAYS be prepared to run. If a security guard asks you to stop, give them the bird and dip. It's why God gave you legs. Be confident, and watchful. My personal favorite place to steal from is Safeway. I've gotten away with eighteen racks of beer, cartons of ciggarettes, everything. Just be calm. No ones expecting you to walk out with outragious things. My number one rule is run. They aren't aloud to chase you if they aren't cops.

Bad Wolfe 4 years ago

I shoplifted for years before I got caught, and the most important advice I have, (and this might sound strange) is don't get greedy. If you get a nice haul and think 'Oh I'm sure I could grab one of two more things', don't do it. Greed makes you overconfident, and distracts you. This is what got me caught, and this is what gets so many others caught.

Aside from that, there are several tips for a successful day of shoplifting, many have already been mentioned, but some are so useful to know that I'll repeat them again.

1. Sometimes you have to 'Spend Money to Make Money' - nothing takes suspicion off of a person like spending money. Going up to that counter, talking face to face with the cashier, taking money form that wallet and forking it over, you might as well be bribing the store to let you walk out with what whatever you wanted to jack.

2. 'If You Look Guilty, You are Guilty' - This isn't meant to be taken at face value. Basically this means that if you're skulking around a store, shifty eyes and all, people are going to start thinking something's up, even if you just happen to always look like you're up to something and are in fact perfectly innocent. So really this line applies more to the minds of those observing you. If a person sees a person looking guilty, what do you think they'll assume? And the reverse is true too. I have literally sat in a Borders Cafe, unwrapped and desensitized several DVD's, placed them in my bag, and walked out no problem. The truth is, people don't usually pay attention to what everyone else around them is doing. They might occasionally glance over, but all they'll see is a person opening something that they just bought.

*I will warn that this can be risky. There are the rare few people who will screw this up for you. Also, there are the occasional sting operations, especially if a store has been getting robbed quite frequently. That's actually what got me caught. I didn't realize the person down the isle was actually part of said sting operation, and so I suffered the consequences of overconfidence.

3. Sometimes, employees can be your friends. If the item you're gunning for is something with a security tag, all hope is not yet lost. While this doesn't always work, you can do things to improve your chances. Your clothing should be mature, the older and more responsible you look, generally the less suspicion falls on you, especially since many guards assume it's punk teenagers who do most of the shoplifting (And who knows, they may be right). So anyways, the trick starts with you bringing an electronic item that sets off the alarm. This could be some newly purchased item, or a computer. It should be a complex machine of some sort. Once it sets off the alarms, you should go up to the counter and tell them your item is setting of the alarm, but you don't want it to be desensitized as the magnet might harm the device (This is why computers are especially useful as you could be worried about wiping the harddrive). Now there isn't an exact guidebook for this, you really just have to go off instinct and how the situation unfolds around you. Just make sure to appear a little innocent and somewhat clueless. Who expects 'Guile from a Fool' after all. Part of the reason this works is that you're intentionally bringing attention to yourself, which in the minds of most people, immediately rules you out for planning anything nefarious.

Well, those are just some kernels of wisdom I wished to impart on those interested. I'm by no means an expert, but I feel my skills are decent.

One last thing, 'Be prepared to get caught.' Statistically, the more you shoplift, the higher your chances are of being caught, sort of a Law of Averages thing. And while some people steal out of desperation, for those who do so out of greed, I warn you to ask yourself first 'Is what I'm grabbing worth the chance of being arrested?'

Oh, and if it's books you're going for, always check for tags. Even if you've never before found one in a book before, do it every time.

I personally am shocked to see these posts. If it was okay to steal, if that was something that promoted the well being of soceity and really America as a whole then I could understand doing it but if everyone stole just imagine how horrible it would be. I think stealing is for people who can't make it in life. They are behind or something mentally. Why not just work for what you have. Jesus, get an education and provide for yourself the normal way. It's cave man like if you will. I think ppl who steal are behind evolutionarily speaking and your a fool to think that your greed won't lead you to get caught. I pray that god will take care of these fools.

the day, corporations lets its loss prevention have proper powers to deal with shoplifters is the day loss preventing will finally be effective. everyone is too damn worried about lawsuits. this stupid society puts too much emphasis on the rights of criminals. if proven guilty why have rights? doing bad things should forfeit whatever rights you claim to have. there are 6 billion people in the world, who the fuck cares about some scums life. btw to those trying to rationalize stupid behaviour, look up cognitive dissonace it'll be the end of you.

Stephan 4 years ago

You really do not have to shoplift anything. First, buy something small from another store and hide it and the receipt on you. Go in Walmart and browse around and casually take the item out. Act like you are looking at it and then put it back in your pocket and start to leave. When you are stopped tell them to call the police. Once police arrive you take out the item and your receipt. BAM!! Lawsuit. I did this with a $14.00 item and settled for $23,000 plus all costs. I have seen some people refuse the settlement and ask for a jury trial and win 6 figure awards. And the best part is no crime was committed.

I hate how upset Walmart and target gets about stealing THEY ARE DOING THE SAME TO US !!! having their shit made for pennies on the dollar and making us pay 100% mark up value. They are the "pos" Thieves , not the people who steal because they cant afford anything.I have been stealing for a few years now and recently i turned 18 , i know i need to be more careful now. But ive been stealing larger items like clothes and stuff , because i let to close friends in on what i do and they started doing it with me bc none of us have jobs or parents that make enough to buy the things we need.

Recently the two friends got caught and arrested IN Walmart by some under cover Walmart people that took them in the back , they had photos of me , and the other two people. They asked lots of questions about me , but didn't get answers . ALL THEY HAD ON CAMERA WAS US LOOKING SUSPICIOUS , they didn't have any footage of any of us stealing. They arrested one girl bc they found a card A CARD!! worth 2$ dollars that she had taken. This makes me sick and im sorry is all you "good doers " such as TONY think that ,that's deserving of arrest . But i think its just ridiculous.Anyways they plan on having us "banned " from all Walmart's. I cant believe Walmart is making such a big deal. They cheat us out of money every day . if anyone is in this for "GREEDY" purposes it is Walmart.

A simple mall cop 4 years ago

Everyone gets caught in the end!!! Simple... I've arrested different kinds of people for shoplifting from the young juvenilles who pocket cosmetic items that they cant afford so they can be like their big sister, to drug dealers who have stolen petty items that they could clearly afford with large amounts of cash in their possesion, professional shoplifters who have consealed small and large items at the till point in full view of everyone whilst being served by another member of staff, elderly people who steal because they thought they wouldn't get looked at twice, drug addicts/users and even people who have worked for the government...

Poor. 4 years ago

To tony joe and sam. you enjoy catching these people because you have a decent paid job and a home and probably even families. some of these folks who do this are desperate and regardless of what the media says the benefits people wont help them out. what would you do if you were homless addicted to drugs and had nothing but the dirty clothes you stand up in. i know, before you say it that some of them put there selfs there and i would say your right, but have you ever tried to get out of a hole like that. some of these guys and girls, as i said before are desperate, and not for trainers which is a popular myth. its normally for food and drugs. again have you ever tried giving up an addiction. some folks like the professionals, who do it for kicks, then i understand you wanting to arrest them they do it for kicks. but when someone is stealing for food then perhaps its time to help your fellow human out no matter what his crime(apart from sexual crimes). i must state that i am no shoplifter and nor have i ever been. i have a large family and a nice home with a good career and have never been in trouble with the authorities of any kind. just so nobody says "look another criminal sticking up for a criminal". come on people, when we lose our sense of responsibility for mothers were all doomed. just my 2p worth.

for all those who say shoplifting doesn't matter cause walmart and target make so much money.. think of the little guy, as an assistant mgr. at a retail store, im the one who is held responsible for theft... i make low pay and am doing everything i can to hold on to my job. people who steal from my store are not hurting the big corp. they are hurting everyday people who are trying to hold on to a job. when people steal, they take away my job security.

Rachel 4 years ago

I used to shoplift all the time. I would walk out of the mall with over $1500 worth of clothes. I stole from grocery stores, Walmart...you name it, I took it. My problem was not getting caught. Sure, I got caught once and charged with a small misdemeanor, but I never received the felony charge I truly deserved; but, I continued shoplifting successfully for years after i was caught. My problem was my thinking: I saw something I wanted and I didn't have the patience or the discipline to work for it. I do NOT agree with using addiction as an excuse to shoplift. I myself am an addict in recovery, and I work a 12 Step Program (Narcotics Anonymous) to lose the desire to use AS WELL AS to stop shoplifting. Some theives are more successful than others. Some get caught and some never do. But whether it's a mom-and-pop shop that feels the lost product or the big corporation that cuts back charitable donations because shoplifters lowered their annual profits, shoplifting IS HARMFUL. If you're a practicing shoplifter, I suggest you stop, find a 12 step meeting, and turn your life around. You'd be surprised how much happier you'll become being a responsible, productive member of society, rather than the sneaky fucker who pulled one over on security and got a new jacket/outfit/cd/DVD/game system.

16 year old cashier at Walmart 4 years ago

I work for Walmart as a cashier, and all of you people who say that it is just some greedy corporate giant is wrong. We seriously try to lower prices as much as possible. Each week our managers sit down, go through the local paper, and hand write down everything they find that is cheaper. On my first day alone a group of scumbag indians came through my line, I had seen them there before about a week ago when I was walking back to go for my interview, and I had that gut feeling in my stomach. I put in the suspiscious activity code on my register, whih immediately notifys security and all CSM's in my area of it. Turns out they had stolen over $1000 in merchandise from Walmart, and they got caught by a 16 year old on his first day. And to you fools that walk out of the store thinking you're home free, mind you there are over 700 cameras in your average Walmart supercenter, and footage is stored for over 3 months, and people are watching them, constantly. We will also usually let first offenders to get away with it the first time, then once they come back and try to get something bigger, we nail them. We will find you, and prosecute you, I don't care how poor your ass is, if my coworker who was homeless and after working at Walmart got an apartment can survive, you can too. If I can find a job, you can, no matter how small it may be. Shoplifting hurts hardworkers like her first. We will squash you like a dirty cockroach.

craven moorehead 4 years ago

I'Ve searched all over th internet and haven't found aby info on my method so it must be pretty solid. We work in organized groups and travel the country. I won't go into details but I must say beware. Most people have no idea the technology and networking that these big box retailers are using. No one here has even mentioned the NRF (national retail federation) or the facial recognition Walmart uses via the recently installed cameras about face height on the front door of every Walmart. Also the L.E.R.P. network. I've been doing this for years and was taught by someone doing this for over 25 yrs, and let me tell you, retailers are fighting back in a big way and petty shoplifters have no chance against what they have. Also Target is the retail leader for theft surveillance, you may pocket something once in awhile but trust me they will catch up with you, my crew takes on a bad day around $3000 in merchandise and we never have and never will step foot in Target. Also stay out of malls, once you steal fro+ a store, your still in the mall, its stupid, don't do it. And all this bs about security tags....who cares just cause a bell goes off at the door does not mean your legally obligated to stop its just a tactic they use to scare you, if it goes off, don't look back and don't run either because remember...you didn't steal anything....right. always maintain your innocence.

I really wonder how do people simply quit the store with a cart full of items. Don't you have to pass by front of a cashier?

Although i've never stolen for profit or greed, i have stolen food in the past, and occasionally still do. i've been in a financial dip, only literally covering my 390 rent, leaving me with 30 to be able to cook up my food on the stove. during this time i bought what i could regarding food, but to be able to go on until i found more work i stole food on a regular basis. it was the wrong thing to do, and still is. but had a set of rules i kept myself to. never steal more then you NEED, never steal from independent single owner shops and never steal anything other then food. the clothes you're wearing will outlive you. don't commit to greed. financial problems are always temporary if you have the will to continue searching. I hope my story can help explain why some people steal. i don't feel justified. it was still wrong to do. but if i was to survive that phase, i needed some basic food items (those i couldn't forage) -Anon

Some people actually have no money and steal things to stay ALIVE. That was once me. My mom died when I was 7 and then 2 months later my dad killed himself to be wit her I guess. I was taken into a foster home (which sucks) I was finally adopted at the age of 9. They eventually kicked me out when I was 11. I had no where to go, too far away from ANY relatives. From ages 11-13 I was homeless and constantly stealing to keep my ass alive. I never got caught and I stole over 200 times. I was finally adopted from my best friend's family at 13. I'm still here and now I am 17. I haven't stole once since those days, I don't regret it though. I was saving myself.

Your actions effect the employees at the stores you steal from. I work at a clothing retail store and if we have a high shrink we can be fired. Now if your stealing food and hygiene products I say sorry about your luck hopefully life turns around for You. If your stealing clothes or video games I say, fuck you I would personally throw carbonic acid on your face and watch it melt away. I don't want to baby sit you I don't want to waste my time dealing with you and your stupid mentality. I don't think you serve a purpose in society you are the same as a pedophile or a murderer because you don't have a moral compass. You are a cancer upon society that should be removed immediately. You shoplifters have made me so bitter and hateful toward your breed. I don't even think your a creature. I have more respect for a raccoon I see digging in my trash than I do for you. I waiting for a shoplifter to attack me one day. That will be the day I finally get to set my anger free. Keep in mind I can stay sweet as pie when you keep your hands to yourself. Touch me and it would be like killing a roach on the ground no problems all. I don't really think shoplifters ( I'm not going to call them people because that's not what they are) understand or really care about the people they hurt that are working their job making a paycheck struggling to stay alive.

I thought I was a "pro" at shoplifting as well as some of yall do. But I can tell you one thing; you will eventually get caught. tonight I got caught stealing from Walmart just stupid shit that added up too 104 dollars and I was only a couple dollars away from going to jail and since I am only 16 I had to call my mother. I paid for like 7 things that were like fall decorations and the manager stopped me looked at my recepit and then nonchalantly asked me to open my bag as I did he responded "why?" and I just didn't know what to do or say. I went into the little room and from there I watched him watch everyone in that store. I was charged with a mesdinenar and I have to be on probation and this will be on my record for my life and I was banned from all walmarts! therefore, I won't be able to go to college, buy gifts from Walmart, groceries from Walmart or purchase anything from there. THEREFORE, even though YOU THINK they don't pay attention to this THEY DO I PROMISE!

Wal Mart and other huge corporations are scum that exploit humans. Governments steal and murder as well, that is how the United States was founded. I work in loss prevention in a big department store, and love reading all these post, because if you're posting on the internet that you are steal, firstly I think that you are lying, or you are just plan dump, and in that case I'm sure that you would have been caught by now at a few times. I reckon if you say that you are as good as you reckon at shoplifting you are obviously smart enough to know that it is crazy dump to post that you're stealing on the Internet. I enjoy going to work every day to catch you shoplifters. I reckon it's like going Fishing. I set the bait and you guys bait every time. It's really Fun, and something will always give you away. It might be as small as the way you hold the product.

A friend I know has a masters degree in civil engineering. He started shoplifting because he was in school and wanted to get his girlfriend things he couldn't afford. It soon became an addiction. He went to therapy to deal with the what he describes as a dopamine release and a sense of fairness which he said wasn't rational but somehow your mind can justify anything. He only took from big stores. He was caught only once early on taking food and started studying loss prevention rigorously.

If he were to sum all the things taken at the value of what the items were worth, he took at least a million $ in luxury goods over 5 years. He started seeking help when this addiction became like a sport.

The irony is that he gave most of it away to either his girlfriend or friends. The issue was not about stealing but more so his psychological state. He was never caught after that initial incident. He had developed full proof ways and had a tool for each device. He studied slight of hand. He studied people. He knew how fast to move given the type of camera. He was able to identify the LPA extremely quick. He was noticed several times but he also was aware of LPA protocol and left the store without anything in hand. There was no real reason he was taking things at this point. Many times he wanted to return them and explain to the manager why it was so easy. He knew the stores that were vulnerable and more importantly, the ones that were not. Some stores had great security but those tended to be stores that catered to people that were middle income to poor. If you were to meet him, you would assume he had everything one could ask for in life.

He noticed how most stores would change their layout and the change was eerily always around the items he had taken. The last part which is also a little ironic was that He also wanted to work as a loss prevention officer because it was too easy but he had a well paying job and figures it was best to stay away from anything that might spark a relapse.
