Supreme Court Shirked Its Responsibility

V K Singh Throwing Abuses At The Government

The Chief of the army staff in India V K Singh is creating one controversy after another. He is due to retire in May this year but it seems he has already done the damage to the reputation of the ruling Congress Party and its leaders. What more he will do before he retires is not known. He has sent chill down the spine of the Congress leaders by hurling accusation after accusation.

Supreme Court Shirked Its Responsibility

It started with the age controversy. The army chief V K Singh pointed out that his age was wrongly written in the records. But the government refused to heed his plea. The general dragged the government to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, instead of solving the issue, gave a judgement that the army chief has to obey the civil authority. The Supreme Court judgement is very peculiar and uncalled for. If the civil authority namely the government of India asks the general to murder a school principal, should the general obey the civil authority? Army general has to obey the civil authority only if the instructions are legal and binding. In this case, the General is of the opinion that the age entered in the military record was not correct. Under such circumstances, usually the courts take into consideration the date of birth entered in the matriculation certificate. Instead of doing this and giving a proper judgement, the Supreme Court shirked its responsibility.

General Hurls Bribery Allegation

Naturally the General got aggrieved. He hurled another allegation against the government that he was offered a bribery of Rs.14 crore by somebody who wanted to sell sub-standard tankers to the army. The General said that he reported this event to the Defence Minister A K Antony. Antony admitted that the General indeed reported the matter to him. This allegation by the General has embarrassed the government.

Antony Is Following The Prime Minister’s Footsteps

If the General has reported the matter to the defence minister Antony, why did Antony keep quiet? It is difficult to imagine Antony being part of the bribery scandal. Antony’s political record is pure and honest. But at the same time if some powerful person in the Congress Party is taking the bribe and allowing sub-standard tanks and weapons to be sold to the Indian army, there is every possibility of Antony closing his eyes and allowing the scam to happen. This is what the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is doing. Manmohan Singh is not a corrupt person but he allows many scams to take place in his administration, like for example the 2G spectrum scam, in order to facilitate a powerful person in the Congress Party to siphon off the government money to her Swiss bank account. Antony may be following the footsteps of the Prime Minister in this regard.

Another Allegation By The General Embarrasses The Government

The General V K Singh has hurled another abuse at the government. A letter written by the General to the Prime Minister speaks about the poor quality of the weapons and tanks in the Indian army. The General has stated that the Indian defence forces are totally unprepared to tackle any emergency. This should be sweet music to the Chinese who want to attack India and capture Arunachal Pradesh and some other areas.

Rajiv Gandhi Was Accused Of Involvement In Bofors Scandal

Now it is clear why the government of India refused to go by the matriculation certificate of the General V K Singh Had the government accepted the true date of birth of the General as mentioned in the matriculation certificate, it would have extended the General’s tenure by one more year. That would have upset the government’s plans as V K Singh is straight forward and does not take bribes. One year is a good time to make money amounting to hundred billion dollars. Government should have pressed the Supreme Court to reject the General’s petition. Corrupt politicians cannot digest a straight forward army General and want to quickly get rid of him under some pretext or other. It should be noted that Sonia’s Gandhi’s husband and former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was accused of involvement in the Bofors scandal which was also connected to the defence purchase of weapons.

Rahul May Come Up With Reservations For Muslims

In order to avoid the embarrassment and to turn the attention of the public and the media from the scandals, Rahul Gandhi may try to introduce reservations to the Muslims in the army. That may win the Congress the votes of the Muslims in Gujarat when the assembly elections in Gujarat take place at the end of the year. Rahul Gandhi may also introduce quick promotions to the Muslim officers in the army in the name of helping the minority community.
