Sympathy For Devils
Sympathy For Devils
I am not about to quote or pay homage to the famous Mick Jagger’s Rolling Stones song but only to opine on the respective personal troubles of Bernie Madoff, Casey Anderson, and Hugo Chavez – those we may pejoratively deem as modern devils. Perhaps, I am getting old or moreover, it is the growing Spirit of the Christ in me, but I feel sympathy for those infamous people I named above. During the Bernie Madoff’s news era, I watched him coming from some mandatory legal hearing, and, as he was walking back to his ride, surrounded by the phalanx of reporters, one of the photographers bumped into him and Bernie gently pushed him off… with the photographer forcefully and violently responding in pushing Mr. Madoff, almost causing him to stumble.
That iconic image of the young photographer pushing that old man - even though it was ‘the devil’ of the moment, Mr. Bernie Madoff - stuck in my craw, even now. It did not matter to me what Mr. Madoff had done… all I saw was a young man beating up an old man… with my wishing one of Bernie’s sons were close by to defend his father. I observed that no one paid attention or was there a mention of what had happened between Mr. Madoff and the overzealous photographer… I supposed the thinking was that Bernie deserved anything ‘bad’ that was coming to him.
Casey Anderson is going to be released a few hours from now and we are being told that she has to move out of the state of Florida, and even then, she probably will have to change her appearance because there are those who genuinely want to harm her. I have written a recent blog about how I thought that Casey got away with murder, but wanting to harm her when she has been adjudicated by the court of law is anarchy. Would those who would do Casey harm have the same sentiments about the gang bangers, who have killed the young and old, but are walking free – some are even being played on the radio and their ‘telling’ lyrics are probably part of your children’s CD collections.
Today, I read that Hugo Chavez was abdicating some of his presidential duties because of his battle with cancer – Hugo came into my wheel house after I saw him years ago at the United Nations. I remembered Chavez strutting like a peacock a couple years ago at the United Nations’ podium… after President Bush had spoken. The Venezuelan leader opined, to the cheering United Nations’ ‘Kleptocrats,’ that El Diablo (President Bush) was just here at the podium. I am no fan of Chavez because he rules by fiat and struts around criticizing America, as though his house is pristine… yet, I do not wish what he is going through on anyone, even on a despot of his ilk.
Years ago, I came to New York and, and in my attempt to build a bond with my sisters on my mother side of the isle… I would observe what music they like to listen and the shows they were watching – one of the shows popular in my mother’s house was the “Jerry Springer show.” What I noticed with Springer’s guests was that, as outrageous as these guests were… there were those in the audience criticizing said guests, but who I suspect were far worse. I have sympathy for the so called ‘devils” because we all are flawed and prone to what Bernie, Casey, and even Chavez have done – only the Grace of Christ Jesus: there but for the Grace of God go I or We….
