Teacher and Student Relationships

Growing up as a child, one gets the odd crush on their teacher. Maybe it's the cute PE teacher with the great smile.. perhaps it's the new IT teacher. Either way, these little crushes have been tabooed and stamped with those big, red letters: OFF LIMITS.

A couple of years ago, I remember reading an article in a magazine about a female teacher who developed a close relationship with a student due to her troubled marriage. The affair began as a secret until the teacher fell pregnant and had the boy's child. Scandal arose as the affair became public. The teacher lost her license, her husband and the child is being raised by the boy's mother. She is also in jail due her acts with a minor.

Then there was the case of a male teacher who was caught by his wife while in bed with one of his students. He too lost his license, his marriage and got a jail sentence.

They say love can be found in the weirdest of places, so why is it wrong for a student to be dating a teacher? Yes, i agree that age can play a part in the situation, but think about it. Once you leave school, you can freely date the teacher as nothing is said about it. But it's made into a catostophic scene when you're a student.

The world is caught up with scandal as it paints itself on every door. No family has had scandal-free ride in life. A girl I used to know is now dating her Math teacher and they have been together for 2 years in secret and 2 years in public, expecting their first child. I wish them luck.

Imagine if one could never date a teacher. Well, the world would never have many teachers in it because everyone deserves happiness and if it happens to be with a teacher, so be it. If you dated your boss, it could be a scandal too.

I believe the world should stop judging others by what they do as an individual. Is it not preached that we should be true to ourselves and do what makes us happy? Therefore, each to his own. A rumor travels on a grapevine but dies out just as quickly with no attention.

Do you think that it's okay if a teacher and a student are together?

  • Yes, it's their choice.
  • No, it's not right.
  • I'm not sure.

Thumbs up for this Pixie! :)

So true, people’s judgment is so curved..

For me, there is no forbidden in love. When you truly love someone, it doesn’t matter if the world told you it’s wrong coz if you really love each other, you don’t need the world…you just need each other.

You're right Blaise.. all they need is each other.

It depends whether the teacher ( or boss, in the work place) has abused their position.

Also if it ends badly it can be worse for the one with less power.

However I would consider a jail sentence of less value than counseling and some form of education for each party, if the teacher has abused their position.

I do not know the American system but altering their license to allow them only to teach adults would be a sensible step. Good teachers are hard to find.

You have valid points AlexK2009 and every person has a different view point on this topic.

This wasn't in America; it was South African cases. But why would you recommend a jail sentence if they are just two ordinary people? I suppose it depends on the age of the student too.

But if every teacher had an affair or a fling with a student and taught adults only, there wouldn't be many teachers teaching the youth. After all, in every country, there are different ages which discuss at what age a person is an adult.
