The Academic Field of Political Science


The academic study of political science does not only concentrate in the liberal education program to study the political processes, systems and structures of the government and state. It further studies various major fields such as political theory, public administration, political philosophy, political economy, geo-politics, political behavior, comparative politics, international relations and public policy.

These are the professional subject areas in the field of political science in the research, instruction and extension functions of the colleges and universities.

1. Political Theory

It studies the ancient political thoughts and theories from the famous works of Plato and Aristotle to present conceptualization of new political theories such as good governance, social justice, social equality, people empowerment, democracy, socialism and Marxism. The current insight of the author on “The Contemporary Republic” addressed the current political, social and ethical concerns of the 21st century.

2. Public Administration

It discusses the public management of resources through the study of revenue administration, budgeting, public borrowing, accounting and auditing. This is the fiscal management of resources to implement the national government thrusts through the guiding principles of common and general welfare to deliver social and economic services for public use.

3. Political Philosophy

It studies the application of the basic concepts and principles of the political thought such as democracy and social contract by the philosophers during the enlightenment period; and Marxist philosophy as the political ideologies on social equality and other related political philosophical thought that provides the frame of reference in the development of political power and authority of the state.

4. Political Economy

It assesses the economic growth and development as to the application of economic thought of free market economy ( Wealth of the Nations by Adam Smith) and socialist planning process ( Das Kapita and Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. It also includes the integration of political leaders’ insight about the complementation of political ideologies on social equality and capitalistic investment structure.

5. Geo-Politics

It provides political support on tactical initiative of the state as to the geographical sphere of influence and national interest for political stability, exploitation of the natural resources, the political influence, multi-diplomatic initiatives to secure the vested interest of certain geographical areas.

6. Political Behavior

It studies the behavioral pattern in politics such as political activities, political party affiliation, interest-groups, pressure groups and other related activities relevant to the participation of the voters, public official and electorate in the political processes of the society. The common political activities like the campaign period, political platforms, HR participation in political image of the public official, and voting behavior of the people.

7.Comparative Politics

It involves the research study of politics of the different countries as to the governmental systems and processes such as the political processes of the executive and the legislative branch through the application of the parliamentary system and presidential system of government. The comparison as to the political systems and processes as to the implementation of public policies, social services ,economic services and other governmental activities.

1. International Relations

It focuses in the study of diplomatic relations on its applicability to amity and comity such as economic diplomacy, cultural diplomacy and interdependence of the state. The applicability of international relations studies the trade and tariff agreement, cultural exchange programs, employment and investment support program, and relevant interest of the state. The state agreement is usually done by MOA, MUO and international treaty that may define the scope of cooperation such as bilateral or multi-lateral agreement between the states.

2. Public Policy

It involves in the study public policies to provide solutions to the common concerns of the government to strengthen the institutions laws, rule and regulations, and the promulgation of legislative policies. This is to address the major concern of the common and general welfare such as air and water pollution, human and commercial waste, the spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases, crimes and vices.
