The Border Fence

Swiss Cheese?

Yes that's right. When you think of our southern border just think about Swiss cheese. That's how many holes are in it and then some. I ran across the video below a few days ago about our vaunted fence that Boeing was contracted to build. I then thought about how Obama likes to traipse around with his sidekick Janet Napolitano telling cheering throngs of Obama zombies how our southern border has never been more secure than it is right now. Really? It's about as secure as your garage door. Your garage door is actually probably better security. Watch the video as drug smugglers on the Mexican side use a car jack to open the way.

So Easy A 5th Grader Could Do It

Didn't that just give you a warm fuzzy about how secure that billion dollar fence is? The video was released by Chochise County Sheriff Larry Deaver to illustrate the point that contrary to what Obama says the border along Arizona is porous. DHS has authenticated the video as being real and isn't very old at that. These were actual drug smugglers. Notice the clothes they are wearing and the heavy duty back straps on those packs.

So who is the guy on the cell phone talking to when the action begins? There are usually spotters positioned over on our side of the fence who are on the look out for border patrol agents. Now for the obvious question, "Where are those tens of thousands of agents that Janet Napolitano keeps telling Congress are out there actively patrolling the border?" Maybe they were just on coffee break at the time. In fact the video is over 5 minutes long, the terrain is flat and the visibility is excellent. It's no wonder that arrests along the border are down 40% in the Tuscon sector where this occurred. There must not have been even one border agent for miles around.

So as you just saw the fence is jacked about about three feet and the smugglers just scamper under it like mice. Now you can see how secure that border really is. Obama needs to quit talking so much about things he knows nothing about. Not all of this can be laid at his feet since the DHS, under Bush, laid out the contract to have Boeing build this billion dollar fiasco. The DHS, in my opinion, has been a total waste of tax payer dollars and a knee jerk reaction to the events of 911. Private enterprise could do a better job at less cost to the tax payers.

What amazes me is that the fence was designed to operate like it does. Two fence posts are installed so that the panels themselves can be slid easily in and out. Did they forget something about the design? They seemed to have forgotten to weld the panels in place once they were installed. Is it time to have a complete inspection, which should have been done by DHS when the work was finished, of the entire fence line? Who is going to pay for that and the needed corrections? Instead they want to tell the nation what a great fence that has been installed that keeps the vermin on the southern side. Is the problem just on a section or the entire installation job?

Give Him Hell Governor. He deserves it.

That fence was installed in the mid to late 2000's at a cost of $1 billion of our tax dollars. Did we get our money's worth under the Secure Border Initiative? So you now see how secure our southern border is, at least along the Tuscon sector. Is it any wonder that the state government and the citizens of Arizona scoff whenever they hear Obama and Napolitano start in on their tap dance of what a great job they are doing to insure that drug smugglers and illegal aliens are being thwarted so actively from crossing the border? What are we paying all those bureacrats in DHS to do? Obviously it isn't to inspect fences along the southern border.

Someone who speaks Spanish tell us what he's saying on the phone.

As Always,

The Frog Prince

You know the big complaint about the border is we don't have enough manpower on it. For the life of me I don't understand why I've never heard anyone come up with a solution which to me seems glaringly simple - man the border with high school graduates - that's right, make it mandatory that every high school graduate (or person of 17 years of age if they quit high school) must serve in a border patrol. They can be sent to a "boot camp" of sorts for 6-8 weeks where they will become fit and disciplined and trained to patrol the border, men and women - pay them a military salary and teach them through the experience what it means to be a patriot!

Many of our kids today get out of high school but never grow up - they have it too soft and easy - this would be good for the county's future and strengthen the fabric of America’s future citizens. The dangers would be nothing compared to our soldiers in combat and almost over night our county's borders would have an endless stream of manpower to watch them. Service could be as short a 6 months or preferably 9-12 (could be at the recruit's option) and chances are enough would choose it as a career that eventually the program may not be necessary. I guarantee you this would be the best thing that could happen in America. Would eventually put an end to the type of thinking that spawns "movements" like occupy Wall Street and provide our youth with an experience that will help to mold them into the leaders of our future!

Sir Frog, Just my humble opinion here, but I don't believe for one second the powers that be ever really thought or even wanted that fence to work. They are not stupid and let's face it, if left up to the current leader, illegals will get to vote. They will vote for him and he knows it so why should he want to fix it? Further, it would not be that awful expensive to install motion detectors and such along the border. How many of us have them tied into exterior lighting systems now? You can get them at Home Depot for Pete's sake. No, I refuse to believe this problem can't be fixed relatively easily were it a true priority for our leaders. The problem is that while they don't mind blowing our money to make it look like they are protecting the border, they have no actual intentions of doing so, in my opinion. I do love how you lay things out as is with no qualms about it being popular or not! Never change, please.

I always said that we should mine the border. I bet we would have less than an illegal immigrant problem with land mines out there.

Thanks for discussing this serious border situation. Sadly, many Americans believe that the borders are secure enough, thinking that the problem is pretty much restricted to just a few undesiralbes coming in along with the illegals who only want to find a better life. But it only takes a few undesirables to ruin the day.

On the day that something goes BOOM, Americans will finally wake up to the situation, but it will, I think, be too late.

Good job Jim. If a fence would work we could have saved a lot of money over the last 60 some odd years, putting our boys and girls down there at the 38th parallel.

It's too late in the day, and I'm not going to get myself huffing and puffing on this one, but you know that living here in Tucson, Arizona, I'm just a few clicks from that damn border, and this is a major issue with me.

You have to give the men credit to come up with the idea of using a jack and then playing in the sand like a cat removing feetprints in the sand.

Now I have to wonder what we will spend money on next that is one big waste. Should be interesting.

Now Jim, I can't hardly believe this hub. I watched the speech Obama made in El Paso where he clearly said the fence is secure and completed the entire length of the border. Are you telling us the President was not telling us the truth? He even made a joke about us still not being satisfied, and wanting a moat with alligators to protect the border.

Now I am really confused. I was sleeping so well knowing this border was sealed tight, and now I have some doubts. Oh well, old people don't sleep all that much anyhow. Great hub by the way.

As one living in Texas for years, I can vouch that the Texas border is not secure, lol. I just have to look around me. My solution, now that troops are home and needing work, is to place them, line of sight, on the border, from the west coast to the Gulf coast. No need to shoot folks, just the presence should do the job. I don't believe in killing folks for crossing the border, but I do believe in repelling them.

I would include that I would like to see the same line of sight up the west coast, down the east coast, all around the Gulf coast and the northern border. That should keep us in good shape!

Great hub, voted up.

Dale Hyde, as one living in a NORTHERN border state and in my youth spending time fairly close to the border, I don't think that idea would work as well up here with thick forests and many waterways and extreme winter weather conditions... not saying they can't figure it out, but the reason they used to squak about leaving this border open is they didn't want to insult Canada.

I haven't heard much about this border in a long time from the locals, it was a point of pride that this wasn't necessary to patrol... I have never agreed with that.

Jim,

I'm sorry, but I can't help but laugh at how much more innovative they are than we are----that's amazing and I will be willing to bet no one on this side including the engineers ever thought about that as a way to use a jack before either; one of the best things about the times I have lived south of the border was how truly innovative the Mexicans are---one of the Mex mafia kids who lived with me told me there are 25 ways to use a carjack other than the one we know of---

So, Jim and all our Conservative Friends--

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE to do an ONLINE PETITION to the President and Congress ???

The idea about the high school kids doing military service is a very good one and I have been trying to sell the idea to politicians for the past two decades and I think a public petition to Congress might get the ball rollin'

I want to propose that we start with the kids who are already CONVICTED FELONS before they get out of high school---these are the kids I have been taking in and working with for the past four decades and most if not all of them were convicted felons before their 15th birthdays and "terminally unemployable" just like their daddies and grandaddies and many of their moms and grandmoms and sisters are convicted felons:everyone in their whole neighborhood is a convicted felons and none of them can get a job in America---which is why many of them become career criminals'---And by the age of 25 they are sick of it and are willing to do anything to be able to go straight and get out of their hood or barrio

As I have seen from coast-to-coast these kids are put out to play in the street at three or four years old with the older kids who are "hood rats" gangbangers, drug runners and lookouts and by the time they are 8 or 9 they are working for the older kids on the street---in every town America

I believe that a PETITION TO CONGRESS to PROPOSE that we put all the younger convicted felons who are not rapists or murderers into the military for no less than four years and in return we expunge their criminal records and hopefully teach them a skill while they are in and for sure teach them patriotism and honor to a country they are not part of---they could do four years on the border or in one of our crazy desert wars--or where ever they are needed--we are so close to war with Iran and our National Guard have been going to these desert wars for decades now and are re-deployed over and over again which is why they are not on the border--- it is just ridiculous---I know where there a millions of able bodied men and women who could and would take this second chance if it were offered to them---it seems such an easy fix and I would love to have help knowing where a petition would get the most exposure--

These kids have grown up in a war zone in their neighborhoods and by 15 they have spent so many years roaming the streets and are sooo much tougher than so many of our teens who today join the military that they are much better candidates for war---

My daddy always said "all men in America should at the very least do 6-8 weeks of Bootcamp in our military to grow them up and teach them about patriotism"-----In most countries especially the socialized ones; all men are required to give 2-4 years of military service to their country---Most American kids don't know the meaning of the word patriotism--I am not joking and they can't spell it either,so, anyone who knows the best place to start this tell jim on here and I'll watch for it and I will do the petition online and ask all of you to sign it---

I am familiar with the northern border from living in several states along the border up there, Mary...and I have personally seen much cross the border.... It would freak people out if they knew about the arms and illegal persons coming in from the north I tell you! I am sure there are some drugs as well... After all, as you mention, a very hard area to police, but I think it could be possible to a degree, if not line of sight.

Ghost32 4 years ago

Jim, as one who dwells literally within sight of the border, I must add:

1. I don't think these guys with the car jack are all that smart. If they'd shift a few hundred yards one way or the other, they'd come to open areas where the jack would not be needed at all--NO FENCE.

2. Even the (yes, totally worthless) fence is anything but complete. And where the "better" sort of fencing is in place--12 feet or more of mesh--border crossers have actually been TIMED.

Turns out a motivated Mexican in average physical condition can scale the (taller) fence, drop to the northern side, and be gone into the desert underbrush in 14 seconds flat.

Our southern border isn't just "porous". It's basically NONEXISTENT.

marywanders profile image

Dale, then I must assume that you understand the concern I have had about that border since I was a teen, I know what comes over and I know what I have worried about since I was old enough to understand that there are BAD people out there that can read maps and have other information that will help them do wrong over here.

I think the northern border can be guarded but how do you deal with the boundary waters? Superior and the other big lakes are less trouble from my perspective as they can be dangerous to a professional sailor never mind a novice....

Not to mention I knew a couple and their kids who fled El Salvador via canada and of course were here illegally, but the wife and kids had gotten Canadian papers so they were legal there, and yet they were here????.... that ones really a head scratcher

I have been paying attention to our border security for about five years now. It is an issue that really gets me heated! I have never seen this video before but it really irks me.

I thought I have seen all the methods of slipping past the border but this is just downright ridiculous! And to think that taxpayers payed a billion dollars for this? I agree with you when you say that a private company could do better than the DHS of securing our borders. At least they would be intelligent enough to weld together the panels. Honestly, did the DHS think that cartels and illegals wouldn't figure out that the panels are not welded together? We're talking about a billion dollar organization that stops at nothing and no one to get their drugs into America.

Maybe we should start treating our borders like Russia, Iran, or North Korea. What do you think would happen if these infidels were caught trying to cross their borders illegally? It wouldn't take long for word to get out that America is no longer using our own taxpayers money to deport illegals back but instead they are getting a free ticket to visit the lord.

Something needs to be done! I am not against people that want to come to America and help our society but there is a right and wrong way to go about it. The drug cartels I have no patients for.

Our Northern border should be cause for high concern. Because most f it is flat land with a little sign every 100 yards, VERY bad guys can simply "walkover," a phrase which has been used for 200 years.

When I was a kid we used to play "Jump the Border!"

Most 9/11 cretins & Arabs still come in from Canada.

Shameful.

Stu 4 years ago

Hi Frog,

I sent an email to the VT "Merry Trio" complaining about this. Our federal government spent $1 BILLION building a fence I could breach as easily as jacking up my car and replacing a flat tire. And our government deployed minimal personnel to guard the fence. At a minimum, the contractor (Boeing) should be forced to fix the weaknesses at no cost to the US taxpayer. And the feds should back up the improved fence with more guards and better surveillance technology. But what do I know? I'm just the imbecile paying for all this.

This issue is one of the reasons I'm an Independent now days. The border issues are down right scary. Here in Texas, we hear all the time of violent crimes where the perpetrator will simply just run back across the border. Murder, rape, what ever and if they just go back across the border they're safe.

I also heard about elaborate tunnel systems they have to go Under The Fence. It's crazy. Even those years when Terror alerts were at an all time high, our borders were never really protected. It's never made any sense to me.

And then they want to make sure we don't have guns for self protection. (See yall? I don't lean as far to the Left, as some of you think I do, lol) I'm very much AGAINST Illegal Immigration.

Hxprof 4 years ago from Clearwater, Florida

It is as many have commented here: The Canadian border is arguably of greater concern than the Mexican border. Canada's asylum policies are an invitation to terrorists to 'come on in'. From Canada anyone can walk, drive, boat and yes, even fly into the US entirely undetected.

Suggestion: Hire a bunch of Mexican ElCapitans -- put a million in the bank for each of them in their name. Assign each a portion of the border. They can handle it any way they choose including shooting. Every time an illegal crosses into the U.S. $10,000 disappears from ElCapitan's bank account. At the end of the year they take what's left in the bank -- start the new year with a new bank account and start over. The illegal alien problem would be solved. Great Hub, Frog! Best/Sis

KT Banks profile image

TFP, did you say, "Stand in line?" Oh. You mean like our forefathers and ancestors did. Meaning we dare to want to know that people know how to obey the laws of our land and respect us.

To me, that is one of the biggest things. The illegals don't respect us or our country at all. Like displaying their flags when marching on our streets, demanding their rights. They totally discount The Alamo and all the things that we went through to get this country in the first place. They really do think Texas to California belongs to them anyway. Now days if you say, "Remember the Alamo" it's considered a racial slur. I had ancestors that died at the Alamo. They are not honored at all anymore. It's sad.

So to me, it akin to a war. Some of the ideas above may sound harsh, but it really IS a war. Our country would be much safer and save tons of money if we didn't have to support Illegals, print everything in a different language, and push certain buttons to be able to hear English. I wrote a Hub on this where someone said I was no better than Hitler. They just don't get it at all.

I'm so glad you wrote this.

KT - You're a pretty smart cookie. I often wonder which part of "illegal" in illegal alien people fail to grasp. Then there are those who want to grant some sort of blanket amnesty to those who entered our nation unlawfully. That I have a big problem with.

A lot of that is motivated by politics and "vote" garnering which I also find ridiculous. We already have enough problems with people who are voting who are illiterate and uniformed who just enter the booth looking for that "D" or "R" to tell them how to vote. Being one of those Independent voters that amazes me. If you can't speak English why are we posting signs at the polling places in Spanish?

If my views on being lawful make me a Hitler, I reckon that one of those with the loose lips should maybe step up and attempt to trim my mustache to make me look like him but I sure wouldn't advise a move like that. LMBO.

This is the United States of America, not Mexico. We need to actually fix the problem rather than soft shoe it for potential votes. I'm just sayin...

Bob Unferth 4 years ago

The East Germans had 1.4 million anti-personnel mines along their 800 mile border with West Germany, 700 watchtowers, 1,000 bunkers. The border zone consumed about 2,700 sq mi - more than six per cent of all of East Germany; the equivalent of the US setting aside 200,000 square miles for border security - almost the whole state of Texas devoted to guarding the border.

They destroyed whole villages on the border. An inscription on the lone remaining structure:

Bardowiek: mentioned in historical records since 1292; illegally destroyed between 1977 and 1989 by the DDR regime.

The East Germans killed 1,100 people trying to cross; injured and arrested tens of thousands more. They ran a police state.

There were 47,000 troops guarding the border. A special unit of the Stasi worked within the border patrol, posing as regular border guards to weed out potential defectors and sympathizers with potential crossers. One in ten officers and one in thirty enlisted men were recruited by the Stasi as informers.

The cost was about $5 billion per year in todays money; other economic costs were much higher.

It was the most secure border ever.

Still, a few hundred to a thousand people somehow managed to cross the border from East Germany into West Germany every year.

To secure our border so only a thousand or so cross illegally every year, we might need the help of the Stasi. Do we really want any of that? Could it possibly approach being worth it?

The worst part to me is the constant lies we keep hearing regarding border security. There are enough citizens fed up with this lack of border security, many would volunteer for no pay to help close this gap.

The first thing we need to recognize is that every individual walking across this joke of a border is not coming here to pick melons or lettuce, or to work in a restaurant as a dish washer. Some are infiltrating to do us great harm, and they have a network firmly established in the USA to aid them.

I have wracked my brain but can't come up with a good reason why our own government lies to us and even makes jokes about border security. It can't be because of money, that doesn't stop them on any other issue. Hell, they just print more when they run out. So, is it about votes? Or is it that they actually realize how many jobs would be unfilled if they actually closed the border? I doubt we would be overwhelmed with job applicants for picking crops if all the illegals were sent home. The crops would rot in the fields and the prices for produce would go up like gasoline. No, this is much more complicated than just protecting our borders. The truth we will never hear would sure be interesting.

Marquis - You need to contact any grower and see just how many applicants they get at harvest time. Most picking is paid on a piece work basis that exceeds minimum wage, but it is hard, hot, and grueling work. I think you will find that very few of the currently unemployed ever apply for one of these jobs.

The current concern is with Hezbollah because of the Iranian situation. What I understand is that Hezbollah is well organized in the US and Canada, but that organization is used for fundraising; however, this well-organized terrorist group has the capacity to switch priorities from fundraising to terror attacks.

For the past two decades the South American cartels have been going door to door in Mexico offering thousands of unemployed Mexican sons lot of money to work for them---they fly them to S.America to attend 6 week boot camps where they teach them to be trained killers and then they smuggle them into the US to run drugs for them---they have been brain-washed to shoot to kill anyone who gets in their way---especially law enforcement---I recently read where the Columbian Cartel was getting sick of law enforcement in LA and some new ways they came up with to deal with the MS13 gangbangers some of the most dangerous young men on earth, so the Columbian Cartel relocated 30,000 of them to northern Virginia and bought them homes and set them up to "prey" on the unsuspecting citizens of Virginia---

Old Poolman---all your answers about all the insane things that our government does can be found in reading about Agenda 21---it answers all the questions about why our country is going into the toilet every day and makes sense of the madness that goes on in Congress

You have it spot on. The Obama minions need more votes to mandate that we pay for the freeloaders, so they look for any swiss cheese holes to bring 'em in. Strangely, there is no fence for Canadians - If there was, it would be some sidewalk edging blocks from Home Depot so the Canadians would see them at the border and say: WOW! Those are so intimidating - I don't think we can climb over them, eh?

anje - Drug mules are cheap to hire. MS13 might be beyond most people's radar.

francis - TY for the thumbs up.

HBL - Now I sure don't know why a liberal would hate you. Oh yeah I forgot. You tell the truth like I do. LMBO

I agree that drug mules are cheap to hire and the Cartels don't spend all this money on these kids so they can just run drugs---they train them to abduct children to use in child porn and they run sex trafficking businesses from homes in our neighborhoods and they train them to steal our cars and anything else that is not tied down and they train them to take over entire communities in our country and they have done so---there are many, many neighborhoods in America that the cops wont' go into after dark because of these trained

warriors who are as well trained as they are---our prisons are full of them and you and I pay to feed them and every Friday and Saturday nights our emergency rooms fill up with them and we pay for that and again I agree that most Americans have their heads in the sand regarding our ever growing gang population across the nation---but their ignorance is only by choice because there is a ton of information out there about them---for two decades the History Channel has had an ongoing series about them that details who and where they are and why they are here and how they prey on our citizens every day---it is only because Americans don't want to acknowledge them and their danger to our country that they don't have them on their radar---MS13 has more than 200,000 members living in our country most of whom have been trained to be warriors and they and all the gangs have infected our country like roaches and are everywhere

---and this makes it soooo hard for law enforcement to do their jobs when Americans are so far into denial about their existence--we have only had gang task units for a little over a decade and the reason we have them is because gangs are everywhere and our street cops have never been trained to deal with them like the monsters that they are---also, our news refuses to report the problems they cause because of city revenues that would be lost by doing so--- I lived in Dallas for almost 10 years recently and my best friend was a cop who had come from New York City to raise her daughter in the Bible belt and what she found instead was that Dallas was far more dangerous than NYC because there were far more gangbangers----everything south of Northwest Highway in the metroplex is gang infested and every year I was there the Dallas Morning News would put a little one inch ad on a page deep into the newspaper stating that Dallas was the most violent city in America and when I asked them why they don't report the news that put them into that slot, they told me that Dallas is also the number two convention city in our country and if they reported the news of the day, that Dallas would not hold that spot for long---our news does a lot not to tell us what is happening around us and it is on us to know what is going on and it takes a little digging but not much---until or unless we take our heads out of the sand these gangs will continue to infect our country and endanger our neighborhoods and the lives of our law enforcement officers from coast to coast---

United States international border into the Southwestern United States. Construction supporters cite the ongoing escalation of national security risks, relating to Cartel border violence, and their possible co-operation with overseas terrorists.
