The Humanity Movement: H.O.W.

Source

A giant of a man started a movement in a small community called HubPages. His vision, "Humanity One World"...to end poverty and abuse, to be one people no matter where in the world. We've heard similar pleas before but have we ever actually done anything about it? REALLY done something about it?

Yes, I, like most of you have made my donations....I looked for necessary items for the victims of Sandy...I went and bought some baby clothes and pet food to donate but I know I am not alone in this effort. I have family touched by this scourge of Mother Nature. My daughter lost her beach house...gutted because of the rising water....my niece lost her vehicles to the rising water...everyone on the eastern seaboard has a story to go with the ravages of Sandy. Donations of goods and time are great, but how long will they continue? When the furor dies down will anyone be there to help and comfort those who suffered the greatest losses? Will we still be there to help?

Read More; Right here on HubPages

Read Bill's hub to get this movement started: How Do We Cure Social Ills HOW or read his hub on Social Issues.

A hub by another wonderful hubber, Lord, in response to Bill's; A New Hope For the World and Our Country / Giving Back with a Heart

Linda's hub; Organizing for Human Rights and Social Justice

Watch for more hubs as we spread the word! Please forgive me if I omit anyone who has joined this effort. I know it is going to snowball and be hard to keep up. Check links here and in the hubs mentioned. Spread the word. Thank you.

Our Children

I have to say the thing in Bill's article that shocked and angered me the most was this;

Four times I have written about child abuse, and four times I have had the advertising pulled on those articles because advertisers do not want their products associated with issues that are so depressing.

As Bill said, it is not about the advertising but about the message the advertisers are sending. How dare they not support articles that are exposing the horrors that some children are not only exposed to but made to suffer through day after day. No human being has the right to inflict pain or indignity on another...and when you are talking about children it should outrage the entire world! One abused child is an offense against mankind! One abused child should raise the indignation of every living adult! One abused child should be rescued and protected the very instant the abuse is made known.

CHILDREN SOLD AS SLAVES!!! Can you even believe this happens in this day and age? Well, it does. What are we doing about it? Have you ever heard of "Anti-Slavery International" ? It is a British charity. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that such a charity even needs to exist...but it does! "Count on 2 First" reported on January 18, 2010 that;
"The disturbing underworld of sex slavery is the fastest growing crime in the world. But what people most don't realize is that it's happening right here in Southwest Florida – from areas you might never expect.

In this world that many people do not even know exists, children are exploited and sold for sex."

Yes, I missed this newscast too. On what planet and century is something like this not front page news in every newspaper in the Country? Scratching your head and saying you thought this was a problem in Third World Countries? From Fox 19 in Ohio;

"In 2009, a report was conducted for the Attorney General's office estimating that "...of those American born youth in Ohio, 2,879 are at-risk for sex trafficking, and another 1,078 youth have been trafficked into the sex trade over the course of a year.""

It really is time to stand up and fight for our children! Every child in the world is our responsibility and its time the world began to take this responsibility seriously. I've only touched the tip of the tip of the iceberg!! These are our children! This is happening in the United States!

Song About Child Slavery And Human Trafficking TAKE NO GLORY

Our Veterans

And what of our returning veterans? Are they getting the medical help they need? Are they getting financial assistance from the country they fought for? Statistics say 75,000 veterans are homeless on any given night....think about that staggering number....75,000 of the men and women who put their lives on the line, voluntarily for this country, return to homelessness! They return "from the war" but they are still living the war. There is no normal life for them.

Think about it...this Country paid to feed and clothe these 'soldiers' and send them into harm's way...then when their fighting was done, this Country brought them home, and dumped them? How can this be when we send billions of dollars of aid to other countries to help them with housing? Isn't there something wrong with this picture?

Dale's Story

Source

Poverty and Foreign Aid

Did you know in 2011 Apple's top executive made $378 million dollars while it would've taken 6,258 typical Apple worker salaries to match Cook's total pay? That's according to CNN Money.

David Simon of Simon Property made $137 million for last year; a minimum wage worker at Simon's mall would take 9,096 years to make that much money. That's according to huffingtonpost.com...the article goes on to say someone making the average median salary of $39,312 per year would need to work 3,489 years to make that much money....how many people are currently making even the 'national average' of $39,312 per years?

According to bread.org, "14.5 percent of U.S. households—nearly 49 million Americans, including 16.2 million children—struggle to put food on the table."

To maintain a strategic partnership with Egypt the US will give Egypt $1.5 billion this year according to CBSnews.com....are you seeing the discrepancies here? Do we stop poverty in this country by giving $1.5 billion to Egypt? We give aid to over 150 foreign countries in the world....and yet, we have poverty and hunger right here in the United States! We need nutrition programs to see that every American is eating, we need a jobs program to see that every American can get a job but what do we have? Foreign Aid! I don't know about you but I'm just speechless about this!

Now, I could go on, I could give you more statistics, I could try to make you feel guilty or outraged, but....I think after reading this, or I hope after reading this, you already are.

Join Bill's H.O.W. movement. Write a Hub or a newspaper article in support of Humanity One World...let's fight for the underdog for a change. Let's worry about our neighbor! "Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers...that you do unto Me."

These are daunting facts that many of us never think about. I have always wondered how these big execs make so much money..what do they do that is so wonderful. How would they survive if they lost their employees? Great and thoughtful hub. Voting up And sharing.

Beautiful! You did some fine research and the examples and stats you quoted are powerful. I greatly appreciate you being a part of this movement, Mary! It speaks volumes about you as a person, and I am proud to be your friend.

SilverGenes 4 years ago

This is very powerful and I had to read this several times to grasp the full significance. I watched both videos. How it is possible these things are not front page news? And what kind of society have we become when articles on child abuse are deemed not appropriate for advertisers? Why are vets living on the street? Have we lost our minds? This must end. I'm sharing and linking.

Mary, this is so powerful. How many hubbers fall into the statistics you mention above? How many of us are worse off today than 10 years ago?

And the human trafficking? Are you kidding me? How can anyone with a conscience allow it or condone it, let alone be a part of this inhumane behaviour?

We need to thank God for our blessings and do our part to have every human on this earth be grateful for life.

Dear tillsontitan

If I could I would be standing on a chair shouting YES YES YES! You hit on three most important issues....Please Feed our children first...What about our Vets who have given their souls, and lastly the senseless abuse...We have a voice and it is time to stand tall and write about things that have substance and will encourage ourselves and others to move mountains. Thank you so much..you have done just this..I am linking and sharing.

Dear Mary,

I knew you would step up to the plate in your passionate and poignant manner.

I will be linking this to my upcoming hub and feel humbled to be among writers who actually believe in the impact of the written word.

Voted UP and UABI. Hugs, Maria

Hi there, Mary (and Bill, etc.) I have been reading these articles with great attention! They provoke conflicting emotions in me. On the one side, I am awed by the intensity of your feelings as they come through the written word. (That "your" is plural). On the other hand I have a strong desire to say "I told you so". You must remember I live in what once was one of the "Yankee, go home!" countries, and through my personal experience as a pre-grad student in the US so many years ago, all this is no novelty to me. I saw the poverty, the inequality, the narrow-mindedness and the prejudices. I could fill a book with all the details I collected then. What you are writing about now, is just more of the same, with some refinements. The recent sub-prime crisis is just an example of the way society in general has really and finally lost its way. All those years ago, I told my parents that they should not transfer to the US to join me as was the original plan, because I was going back to Chile. A decision I have never regretted. Coming back to the present, I find this so sad, because the US is still the leading nation in the Americas, and all the rest of our respective countries need this leadership. And if WE need it, at a once-removed level, it is even more crucial for the US nation as a whole, as you are more directly touched by the presence (or absence) of this leadership. Still, after reading about this HOW movement, I consider there is still hope! I wish you all the best in your efforts and I will be in contact! I am also proud to be able to say I "know" you, even if it is an electronic friendship. My prayers will be with you all.

When I read Hubs such as this one, I get so angry I can't stand it! How do we tolerate conditions in our country the way we do. We are such a selfish nation; as a people.

I am so sorry to hear of your person loss with Sandy. We were lucky here in Florida (again).

I pray every night for our country and its people, and for our leaders.

Thanks for writing such a wonderful Hub. I voted it UP, etc. and will certainly share this.

Til....Stunning! I am moved to outrage, and spurred into action....I too, am focusing on contributing to the awakening of American "sleepers." To be aware and face the realities, is to be inspired toward a movement, so long overdue. You, Til, have brought into clear view, the complete shock of "looking at" our sins of neglect of our very own.

There IS always hope, but WE must push and pull and make our voices heard.

Thank you for this moving and powerful PUSH, Til. We are ONE. UP+++

Well said Mary. This is an issue, or really a series of issues that need to be addressed. The government needs to listen to the message and needs to do whatever it takes to follow as well.

Mary, your outrage and indignation comes through loud and clear and is enough to raise the dander of any who reads this. This could be a powerful start to a movement we need to get this country off the dime and out of the pockets of corporate types who pull ads as you mentioned.

Mary, you said it perfectly and beautifully. Your research was spot on and wonderful job truly. I must say I agree with all, but the one that speaks volumes about our country is how the rich keep getting richer and the rest of us just keep getting poorer. These wealthy individuals couldn't care less about the common man and it is just deplorable. Have already joined the movement and yet again another wonderful article in support. Have of course voted up and shared all over as always!!

Before I can answer each of you, I have to say I am moved to tears. If only we could get the rest of the country as emotionally involved as we are and move them to action. Maybe this is the way!

Carol, the "big" guy is nothing without his employees. Oh he may have set things up to get to the top but without the "little" man he'd never stay there because there would be no "there"!

Bill no one could be more proud than I to be a small part of this. I just can't understand the inequity and callousness of it all. Where did this country go wrong? We fought slavery once, must we fight it again? I hope we win for good this time.

SilverGenes, my sentiments exactly! Why aren't we hearing about this day in and day out...it should be front page news every day until its stopped! Thanks for sharing and linking, it brings us all that much closer.

Bravewarrior you are so right. I have a brother who has been out of work for over two years and because he is over 50 his prospects of finding a job are zero to none! Human trafficking is totally beyond my comprehension...when I look at my grandchildren and try to even imagine something like that happen, I'm just boggled.

Thank you Sunnie. I think that is what we are doing, we're standing on our chairs and yelling...."listen to us! Do something about these atrocities and horrendous situations!!"

Ardie, none of us are lumped, we are all gathering to fight together. I'm sure the uniqueness of your hub will shine through! Thank you.

I'm sure you have more experience with these situations than we do Joan but it is not just America that is dealing with it. It is just that we are now asking our Country to fix it here first! To look to our own and clean our own house. You will always know me and the rest of us here, and it is our honor and pleasure to say that as well.

Maria you are one of our best and I have no doubt your hub will be a shinning star as all your hubs are. Your feelings and caring are most evident....together we can, together we will! Love you girl.

Thank you Mary, especially for your concern...my family was very lucky, their losses were minor....as for the H.O.W., we all need to keep crusading for the right!

Effer, I knew you'd be at my side without a doubt! Our beliefs and concerns run the same way. Hope and Faith! We must have the two to survive in a world turned upside down.

Yes, Curiad, its time to make them listen and look at their mistakes and neglect!

Thank you Lovedoctor.

Xstatic I appreciate your "off the dime and out of the pockets of corporate types" remark! Well said.

Janine I guess its time for the door mouse to speak up...we need to stop letting things get 'swept under the rug'.

Thanks Debbie. My prayer is that this is the start of something big. Bill has given us a push and a road to follow, now hopefully, we will.

Teaches, I don't have to tell you about the suffering children, that's for sure. I know you see it in school and in classrooms. The poverty level isn't just a statistic when you're students can't think because they haven't eaten.

btrbell, I had such a hard time watching Dale's video....I belong to a family of veterans and the thought of one of them having to go through what this poor man has is unbearable...no vet should ever have to live that way! Thanks for the votes, shares and links!

God bless each and every one of you and lets hope Bill's really started something here.

Mary, you did an amazing job on this. Your research should shock everyone that reads it into action of some sort. The beauty of Bill's idea is that even if we all told the same story, readers will interpret that information in their own way. If ten of us write, we reach 10x the number of people that one of us would reach. It's awesome to think how many we could really reach with these messages. i knew you would jump on board and you did not disappoint. This was truly wonderful! Voted up and awesome.

Mary - Good job! You brought out many facts to support much of what's been written by Bill and many others. It all boils down to one thing: the rich protect the rich and say the hell with everyone else. Politicians are all rich and are supported by big business lobbying groups, so what different can we expect? If there's no profit to be made, it's going to continue to be ignored by them. We're going to have to change the system before the "little" people are considered. Great job!

tillsontitan profile image

Thanks mperrottet...I hope I'm not one of the people that just talks about the problem! Seriously, I do get involved and know everyone must on some level.

Theresa, I believe we need to keep Him in everything we do! I agree, a little adds up to a lot!

Rich you are so right. We need to equal the financial playing field a bit...maybe then things will not only get noticed but accomplished.

This is the best H.O.W. hub I've read so far. It made me think of a movie called "Lilja 4-ever" that's about trafficking. I can't believe that so many horrible things still exist in our world today. Your indignation at man's inhumanity and callousness to man - and how rabidly it spreads - is made crystal clear here, my friend! I share your horror at the direction humanity 'chooses' to go - the blinders it wears in order to achieve personal goals while disregarding the suffering of others..

i, for one - cannot tolerate it anymore - and haven't been able to for a long, LONG time! It is sooo good to be in a community where i feel we REALLY care - and are willing to put our actions, money, and time - where our words are!

I guess i am proud to say that most of my hubs have been 'advertising disabled' - as child abuse, intolerance, narcissism and greed are but typical topics on my agenda!

On the other hand - i couldn't agree more that the 'decision-makers' at hubpages should be ashamed of themselves for the distance they try so hard to maintain from the REAL issues that affect us all and the world in which we exist!

Again, i direct our collective attention to the HOTD's - which - while individually have merit - collectively spell GRAY, BORING, and societally USELESS. I have not to this day seen even ONE H.O.W hub celebrated as HOTD. Personally, i refuse to look at them anymore, as it only raises my blood pressure!

Loved this, Queen Mary of Tillson..
