The Mayan Calendar and Christian Response to 2012

The Maya civilization is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Preclassic period, many of these reached their apogee of development during the Classic period (c. 250 CE to 900 CE), and continued throughout the Post classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_civilization)

From this Mesoamerican civilization and its astronomical systems arose a calendar with predictions which would become a topic of end time events for the 21st century. This remarkable calendar of the Ancient Mayans predicts that an event of major proportions will take place on December 21, 2012. Unfortunately, the Mayans did not specify what the major event will be but doomsday believers hold tight to the notion that the world will end on this day. Scientists have various assumptions, theories, and philosophies as to what scientifically could happen. Their theories include major earth changing events such as Galactic alignment, Pole shift, Solar magnetic reversal, and Solar maximum. They believe these events will result from threats such as Meteorite or Comet impact, Gamma rau burst, Extraterrestrials, or nuclear explosions.

According to researchers the Mayans astronomical predictions were based on a collection of systematic calendars similar to the ones used by earlier Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Zapotec, Olmec, and Aztecs. These calendars date as far back as 6th century BCE. Among these systematic calendars were basically two main calendars. One was solar and the other was planetary - based on the movement of the planet Venus, in conjunction with other planets and stars. The two calendars overlapped each other and each was based on a five thousand year cycle. As one was ending the other was already in progress. Therefore, it’s not that the Mayans were predicting the end of the world. Based on their calculations of a five thousand year cycle they predicted that one event calendar was ending on December 21, 2012 and another one beginning on December 22, 2012. In other words, they were simply predicting the end of the five thousand year solar or planetary calendar. Although their scientists and astronomers did look for and anticipated natural disasters, they did not view them as world ending events. Modern day research suggests that the December 21, 2012 date is related to a not-so-well known phenomenon called the precession of the Equinoxes -or- a five thousand year planetary cycle.

The numeric predictions of the Mayan calendar are based on the computation of the Mayan value of pi whose value is possibly more reliable than any European pi. This makes the Mayan calendar remarkably accurate. However, it does not predict the end of the world in 2012. To some the assumptions of world ending events is just another doomsday prediction on the level of Y2K born out of the human need for a cosmic change or a solution to human suffering on this planet, and revenge against those who impose such sufferings.

So what are the Christians response to this doomsday prediction? Christians can be classified as the group most likely to believe in such doomsday predictions based on their understandings and acceptance of end time events as described in the book of Revelation. However, most mature Christians conclude that this is just another bogus assumption born out of a lack of Biblical knowledge. They cite one text from the Bible to justify this position which is found in the book of Matthew 24:36. “But of that day and hour knows no man, neither angels of Heaven nor the Son, but my Father.”

December 21, 2012 will definitely be an interesting day...and so will December 22, 2012 when the earth will rotate around the sun - just as it has being doing for over six billion years - give or take a few centuries.

Interesting read. Seems like we are already into a global paradigm shift. Literalists worry too much, fear too much, war too much - completely missing the point of Jesus' message. They choose to remain ego Christians and resist developing into spiritual Christians.

Speculation on this event as foretold by an ancient civilization? My guess is there is a new spiritual epoch coming to mankind and is nothing to fear. Society has not matched their spiritual growth to their technological growth. Perhaps the new epoch will be a course correction - heaven for those who are simpatico with personal growth and sheer hell for those who resist, fuss and fight.

Besides, as a Christian I take Jesus at His Word: "Have no fear; trust Me." - literally! :) It's that simple; just rest in it.

I just heard about this 2012 prediction and the alignment of the planets, "as for me and my house, I will serve the Lord" i feel that is the best course of action, espcially since no matter what happens we do not have control of it, and God is in control and as the Bible states, we will not know the hour or the day, I do concede that this world of ours is in sad shape, I continue to pray diligently for the repentance of America as a Nation, God Bless Us Everyone

Excellent response to this latest "fear tactic". I remember all the fury surrounding the "Y2K" problem. I just couldn't believe the lack of common sense from some of my friends who worked as computer analysts. Or, the number of times after 9/11 when I received that bogus email (like so many of us did) about Nostradamus' predictions concerning the tower attacks. I believe that the bible has it right: no one knows the day or the hour. Still, has to make you wonder why so many of us fall for this stuff time after time. I'm just skeptical enough to think this is more about boosting sales in a sagging economy than any apocalyptic rendering. I'm more worried about how Wall Street got away with our money.

Thanks everyone for the comments. It seems that every generation has a doomsday prophet and yet the planet has been here for over 6 billion years. Whose next?!

Spanky 7 years ago

The bible staes this above ... Wo do not know the return of christ, he return like a theif in the night.

But this still could happen as 2012 end of world. This does not mean god will return at that time, it just marks the beginning and start, of which prophecy has fortold. We just need to be more alert to it. Just because an astroid or solor flares or etc. Attacks us, does not mean this is god returning. Lets not forget this could all happen, than after god will return.

Time will tell. Do not be decieved, of what you read. Keep an open mind. And on the forshadow of Nos? His prophecies are very accurate. He was just behind a couple years on one (Halleys Comet). All others have been accurate, to the years.

I beleive in God very much. What do I think? I am not sure. There is much in the way of Revelation Prophecy going on right now, that's for sure. I am not positive this is the end though. A few things still need to happen. Read your bibles...

Hello Spanky, thanks for the comments. I agree, a disaster could very well happen but it will not necessarily be the end of the world. A student of Biblical study will adopt your conclusions that no man knows the end.

I think you all make very valid pionts , but a fear based report is one brought on by the enemy and causes fear in people , I think as christian and ones who have are hope grounded in the word of God are not moved by this report or that report. Iam always amazed at how a bible beleive christian will take what cnn says over what the word says . God has not come to give us the spirit of fear but love power and a sound mind . Gods plan was always to reconcile the world to himself and to have relantionship with us it is the greastest love story . He is in control and he has us in his hands that is a great feeling . That gives me a peace that passes understanding and cnn reports .

You showed up in related hubs. There are plenty of interesting revelations happening right now.

Chapter 12 of revelations has 1260 and two wings of a great eagle.

My initials are SJD the same as the three letter code for San Jose Cabo Airport. When I first started having my revelations flight 1260 From San Jose Cabo(SJD) was a flight to Chicago Ohare IL(ORD). When I looked up the flight that's the way I saw it excluding the bold of course. ORD is the three letter code for Ohare Airport.

The thought surrounding 2012 are interesting... like the 11:11 thing. But regardless of what happens, there is little use worrying about the future. (As Jesus said) It will make no difference. To be prepared always, is something else, but still, we are told, in the Bible, not to be afraid of sudden disaster.

End of the earth? Nope. Don't think so. There is still the Millennium Reign to look forward to.

I trust God in all things. We are to keep our lamps full of oil because we do not know the day or the hour of the bridegrooms return. So we are not to panic or fear, but we are to know the signs of his return and be prepared. When He left He told us to go all over the world making deciples of everyone. Do not let the Master return and find you in slumber. Keep working for the Kingdom, and do not fear. Your savior is coming! Come Lord Jesus!

In the last Mayan codex, it shows the destruction of the earth with water. As Christians we know God's promise that he would never again destroy the earth with water as in the Great Flood. And in fact, God says that the earth will be destroyed by fire. I will always believe God. These Mayans were heathen who sacrificed humans which is against all biblical teaching. So why would God show a heathen culture his plans? It doesn't make any sense.

The last time I went to Mexico I visited the ruins of the Mayan city of Chitzen Itza. I was speaking with a Mayan tour guide who seems mildly amused by the whole 2012 thing sweeping America (notice it's not happening so much in Europe or Asia). He told me that just as our years end at midnight on December 31 their calendar ends on 12/21/12. And just as our new block of time begins on January 1, theirs rolls over as well. Has nothing to do with worldwide cataclysm or any of this new age nonsense.

jeff 7 years ago

history repeats itself.i do not think it is the end of the world or the end of man.but i think or i know that and it may not be 2012 . but life for man and woman will change if u look at history civilization end and begin.cycles.we are to smart for our own good.i think that we are put so many pollutens in the air and in the food that we eat.86% of people will hv cancer by 2015. but if there by 2012 is big problems.then most of those will alrady be gone.i think in 3 to 5 years man will alter genes that when babies are born not all but a start of a few then it will grow that they are born with a gene to stop cancer. peoplelook for a cure for cancer it is better to stop thing before it starts that is the cure.that is why in think the earth is going to go through a cooling period and very fast in 3 to 5 yrs i hope i am wrong not about stopping cancer like i said the cure is to stop it before it starts i hope we can stop cancer but i hope i am wrong about the cycles.i hope man will learn to love.and to make better life as we know it.your friend jeff

Hi Jeff, thanks for stopping by. I agree that man is contributing to the problem significantly however, we're also facing planetary changes which affects atmospheric forces on plant earth as being witnessed with the polar ice caps. We're probably within 5,000 years of the end of the ice age and entering the period of global warming. It would be interesting to see what the climate will be like on planet earth in the next 1000 years. Of course human beings will still be around as we will most likely evolutionize with the climate.

It's some scary stuff!!

I'm not too worried about 2012 being "the end", because if it was the end of the earth, then that would mean the rapture would've taken place in 2005 and in 2012 that would be the end of the 7 year judgement period. Well I know I'm saved and I wasn't raptured so 2012 could be the rapture and then the "beginning of the end" meaning the 7 year judgement period. Which ultimately means the world will end in 2019. Why would God let us know the last day of the earth? That means people can live by THEIR own rules everyday up until the last day and repent, instead of always living by HIS rules.

I am an 18 year old boy and I am Christian, not a strong one but I know who my savior is and I know what right and wrong is. I do not believe in any of this 2012 nonsense and I believe that society has only misinterperated what the calender is really meaning. No offense to the mayan culture but I will trust in gods words over theirs ANY day of the week. For I believe that if the world did start to "end" that would undo Christianity for it will have proved it wrong. So I don't think that will happen, No man will know the date or time of the end and those words should be set in stone. I think it is funny how society has paniced at what they thought was "the end of the world" many times before, I strongly believe this will only be another. for those in fear there is a statement in the bible that is on my necklace and is with me wherever I go that helps, "Be strong and Courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." I live with that never leaving my neck or my thoughts, so should you. Ned 6 years ago

2012 events is not about Religion. Its about spirituality. We are spirits and we create all our illusory realities.

The religion tell us to pray to God for forgiveness for our sins (dark illusory realities) and if we don't God will condemn us to hell fire. That is false. The churches have become so corrupt with sex scandals, money laundering and fear tactics that it is hard to rely on churches. The bible has been indoctrinated that most portion claiming God is a destructive God and Jesus will fly through the skies to save us from our dark illusions we continue to create as Christan's - all points to fear tactics and lies. Do the maths!

God is a spirit and light energy. Light energy attracts and does not destroy. Only dark energy destroys. Therefore God does not destroy.

Humans create their dark illusory energies/realities/karmas and are responsible for their actions. If they dwell in dark energy, the dark energy will destroy them and if they dwell in light energy, the light energy will take them to the path of ascension (return to the light/God).

Our ultimate goal is to return to the light (God) and the ascension process is through dimensions. We are currently in 3/4 dimension and moving to 5th dimension.

2012 is not a doom and gloom like most people think. Its a change of a cycle which is already ongoing. A new cycle begins in 2012. The Mayas and scientist knew about it so its not a secret even though that portion was removed from the bible.

First I will say to Christians to forget about Mayas, 2012, and new age stuff. Also, forget about sin, evil, devil, Satan etc.

Focus on light energy, God/Jesus representing the light and not a destroyer. The dark representing Lucifer and the destroyer. Illusion such as money, materialism, ego etc as allowed by God to wake us up. Duality as activities we create by combing light and dark energy. We are responsible for the duality/karma we create.

With that in focus, research about consciousness, frequency, vibration, unconditional love, duality, illusion, dimensions, spirituality etc

Once, you have done this, you will get a clear picture of what will happen in 2012, where you stand, what your roles are and where you are going in 2012.

In addition to this, try to have an open mind about benevolent Extra- terrestrials as they have a role to play in our consciousness. They are not God's or angels but our knowledge about their existence as God's creation helps us in our awakening and consciousness. This is why their existence has been kept secret from humanity.

If after you have read this and done the research and you still don't feel it is necessary to welcome the fact that 2012 is a new beginning for humanity, and one that is divine by God, then you just wait and see what will transpire in a couple of years but please stop cretinisms. of those who have woken up to these facts and are preparing for the coming changes.

The opposite of light energy is dark energy. It is real. Try to live a good life and repent. You must accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, the Lord, your GOD. You will be saved. You must surrender yourself and your control to the Son, the center of all things. The only way to the Father is through the Son. A cross has four points/vertices. All energy is concentrated on that point on high, Our Father who has overarching love and compassion and is the focus of light energy of the world. The opposite of that apex is a black hole. God has three entities, 3 vertices on the cross. There is a fourth, but its is more of a void than a point. Devoid of good. There are TEN commandments. Know them well. Try to live a life free from sin and relinquish all evil, the devil, Satan, and his temptations. Temptations are all around us, and cause us (our center, the Son) to loose control. You need to dwell in the Lord and rebuke all evil. If you give your life to him and have faith in him, you will be saved. Have no fear. Be good, you all are born with love and goodness, and have a heart that can distinguish good from evil, right from wrong.

Love all.

I believe that God works his love in all kinds of ways and if he thought that showing the time and place to a barbaric tribe would benefit him that would be what he would do. Indeed 21/12/12 could very well be the day when there is a change on the earth. But in Revelations it talks of 1000 years of peace as Satan is locked into a pit.

Alastair - thanks for stopping by and commenting. I 'am in agreement with you that God reveals his will in any fashion He feels man will comprehend however, I'll take my chances on Revelation and until I see it being fullfill then I'll have to accept the reality that the world, and life as we know it will continue after 2012.

The forecasts of world annihilation are greatly over exaggerated. The Mayan calendar is circular, like the Medicine Wheel, like the Karmic Wheel. When it comes full circle, the cycles begin anew. What we should be looking for is not just a "paradigm" change, but sweeping change. Quantum Leap. A major one. All of our Spiritual prophets, all of our scientific community are beginning to experience what amounts to a nexus, where all is coming together.

I'm wondering....if you follow what the Bible says, then how do you come to the conclusion that the earth is over 6 billion years old? That makes no sense.

...As for Nostradamus, his dates were always off. People say its because he didn't have a computer back then to be as accurate...I say boo-hoo and BS. There were supposed to be major events in 2006 with "give or take a year"...I think we have obviously surpassed that without seeing those events taking place. He has predicted a dozen or so events since the "9/11 prediction" (if he even really predicted that that at all) that still have not come to be - or anywhere close to it- are they all supposed to happen now in less than 1 year? And even if the world does end in 2012 it will only be the start because Jesus will be coming back. But no one knows and I think its a little arrogant for some random person or philosopher to try and tell us when it will happen.

alibell09 - thanks for stopping by and commenting. The Bible is a book of spiritual inspiration, teachings, instructions, and chronology of the timeline of man from his creation until his expected end - from a spiritual perspective. The Bible is not a book of science or chronological order of scientific events or a dated timeline of when those events actually took place. As a result it excludes certain scientific facts relating to the birth of the planets and - including a timeline of planetary cycles. This does not dilute the value of the Bible, its truth or its significance to the life of the Christian as far as creation or salvation is concerned.

No one really knows how old plant earth is however, we do know it existed before the life of Christ and those who preceeded Him in the flesh. However, scientific evidence does exist which provide relatively accurate data regarding the age of the planets.

Regarding Nostradamus - there is nothing unique about his predictions. Every generation had/has a Nostradamus dating back over 5,000 years ago therefore I place no value on his predictions as it relates to Biblical teachings or science.

alibell09 5 years ago

I am not trying to discredit any of your personal thoughts or beleifs...I don't think God would punish anyone for believing how old the Earth is one way or the other.

When we look at the age of the earth biblically it does not point to billions of years. The Bible gives us a starting point with Genesis and the creation of earth - 7 days. From there on out the Bible gives us specific lengths of time and ages from Adam to Abraham, and so on. There are over 20 cultures in all parts of the world that kept history records all the way back to early Biblical times. Even the Mayans have a record of the Flood. Where in all of this is the magical billions of years? The new theology idea of the Earth being billions of years is derived specifically from science, nothing in the Bible. Looking at the layers of the Earth and carbon dating, etc. simply does not work. Scientists fail to consider geographic catastrophes such as the Great Flood to account for what they are seeing. Which makes no sense, because there are many smaller catastrophes that have happened in recent years to produce the same results, altering the way that science would perceive the age of the Earth. Mt. St. Helens is a great example. The volcanic eruption produced canyons, earth layers, and instant fossils. In a small scale....if a volcano can do that - think about what in the world a flood covering the entire Earth could do? Scientists will only be correct when they decide to include all factors, especially when they are right in front of their faces.

Just something for everyone to think about - whether they believe the Biblical age of the Earth, or the scientific age. The world debate over it will never end.

alibell09 - thanks for your candid comments and I have no argument with your analysis as no man really knows how old planet earth really is. I can change the comment to reflect 6 billion years of 6 thousand years and it will have little relevance on the emphasis of the article.

The emphasis of the article is to provide comfort in knowing that only God knows the end date which He has not revealed to anyone - not even the Son and therefore, the notion that the world will end in 2012 based on a misinterpretation of an ancient calendar is preposterous!

Thanks again for the scientific enlightenment.

God Bless!

I believe in Jesus Christ and the word of God. I can understand why people believe in other options as it takes real faith to believe in Jesus. Faith is not seeing. I can't see Jesus, I just believe. This calender theory is one of great research and details. I respect the fact that other people have their beliefs. But I also believe when the bible states that not even the angels know.

God Bless,

Nick

Hi Eric, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. While I am in agreement that 6 billion years may be stretching it a bit howerver, 6 thousand is cutting it a little too short. If one subscribes to the notion that Jesus walked on this planet then one must accept, at least the 2,011 years time span since his presense, and then the thousands of years proir to his birth. It would be great to know the true birth of planet earth. Perhaps one day we will. I appreciate your comment - take care!

Great hub... I find it very interesting. I actually met with a scientist who travels the country teaching the Creation Theory and his belief was that the world is less than 10,000 years old. Be that as it may, I am not really concerned with the age of the earth or the time of it's demise. As was said, in the word... No man knows the day or the hour. My advice to each and every person who has the opportunity to read this post is... Be Ready. As Mary said earlier in her comment, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. :-)

What rubbish. The Mayan calendar is a calendar. That, you know, begins again. We're not even sure if it's supposed to end on the 13th bak'tun or the twentieth. The Mayan calendar does not predict end times, just like the Gregorian calendar doesn't predict end times. The year 122012 will come and pass as does any year.

To add to that, this planet was birthed in the fires and dust of our newly-born sun 4.56 billion years ago. This universe was created 13.7 billion years ago. For the multiverse as a whole, we have no idea.

reo 4 years ago

I am a believer of Jesus Christ and also a Bible Believer. Bible experts through genealogy will give you the most accurate time our universe was created. It was created by God and it wasn't billions of years ago. And yes Jesus said only the Father knows the day and time the world will come to an end.

Have you noticed those who read the holy books and listen to the preaching’s by organised religions have no peace and create the world concisions’ that create wars and misery.

Have you noticed the life conditions in the country’s ruled by the Religion Rulers.

Have you noticed the in you personal life, based on religion holy books are not working?

Our Laws are based on holy books, but today the laws are separating from the holy books instructions?

Life can not work based on fallacy. Jest look at life in country like Ireland, Pakistan, Iran, where people live by holy books.

Or are you to primitive to observe this truth.

No Man has a knowledge of the day and hour for any kind of end. Only God the Father has that in his keeping. We are to be ready for the Lord. This defines our love and service to God. The Mayan calendar is just that....A Calendar and a poor comparison to the Bible in many ways. The scriptures give us so much more depth in what is to transpire on this earth. I find that the Mayan predictions have served a s a distraction from the real truth of the Gospels. Ever learning, but never coming to a knowledge of the truth, or so it would seem. We have an enemy that seeks our demise, but our focus is on Jesus Christ who will put down all evil and will make this earth his foot stool. He is the final authority and the almight and there is none above him. I rejoice in that knowledge and im at peace to serve My Lord Jesus. There are many distractions in the world that via for our attention. ( Read pilgrims progress). We really must be aware of Doctrines of Devils that are out there. ( The sumerian belief is one of them). I am not a test tube creation from the DNA of a primate, i am a God made man and my service and allegiance is to Jesus Christ the Lord of all. Interesting that the Bible says that Every knee shall bow and every toungue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of all. I can hardly wait. Even so come Lord Jesus.

I'm a little confused. jxb7076, you state the following in a comment

"Jeremy O: I agree with you that the key is to know, and believe, the word of God."

but yet in your article you state,

"December 21, 2012 will definitely be an interesting day...and so will December 22, 2012 when the earth will rotate around the sun - just as it has being doing for over six billion years - give or take a few centuries."

If one believes and knows the Word of God then how can one state that the world is over 6 billion years old? The bible refutes that claim. This really puzzles me.

HEllo Wondering - thanks for stopping by.

Your question is a valid one which unfortunately has no clear answer. The bible does not put a date on the creation of the universe. It only mentions that God created the heavens and the earth in six days and rested the seventh day. From this text one could rightfully conclude that the universe was created in six days - but how long ago?

The assumption - (and I specify the word assumption) of the six billion year age of the planet is based on the rates of formation of sedimentary rocks and other geological processes such as mountain formations, continental drift radiometric dating which, under careful scientific scrutiny - based on our knowledge of carbon dating - substains the 'assumption' that the planet is billions of years old (one bilion, five billion, six billion, who really knows) Such formations do however, requires a very long proccess

So far as the bible either giving or refuting a certain age of the planet such information is not provided.

SOme believe that the planet is only about 6000 years old. This assumption is based on the writings of Archibishop James Ussher (1581 - 1656) who reviewed the genealogical tables from the book of Genesis (chapter 5 and 11)and assumed it to be chronologically correct. His writings was later included in many modern day english translations of the Bible as a commentary note which unfortunately was later recognized as part of the gospel of creation. This commentary note gained prominence with the theory of evolution and as such it became a starting point for the creation of the planet. To qualify the evolutionist theory Adam and Eve came into existence around 4000BC.

Back to your question. Scripture does not support either a 6 billion old planet or a 6 thousand year old planet. Unfortunately, the Bible is the only written account of history which because of a commentary takes back to only a few thousand years. However, scienctific data takes us back much futher. My suggestion of a 6 billion year old earth is an addition for dramatic effect.

For those who believe the world will end on 12/21/2012, I guess they are free from buying Christmas presents and when they wake on 12/22/2012 feeling rediculous for once again placing faith in man and not in the Lord who gave them life they will go onto the next scientific piece of evidence telling them what day the world will end. The Bible tells us that no one knows when the world will end and that its those of us who live by faith in the Lord that know that when our time comes we will meet our father in the sky to be taken home.

billybob 3 years ago

Matthew 24:36. “But of that day and hour knows no man, neither angels of Heaven nor the Son, but my Father.”

jesus did not say here that we won't know the week or year..also this verse is described by many as a clue to rosh hashanah.

in addition, we are at the end of the 6,000 year period, and soon (this year, i don't know, but soon) will enter the final 1,000 years.

jxb7076 profile image

jxb7076 3 years ago from United States of America Author

billybob - thanks for stopping by and commenting. Perhaps you're correct in your analysis that we're entering the final 1000 years. What we do know is that the world did not end on 12/21/12 which should not be surprising since the Mayans did not predict the end of the world and the bible clearly states that no man knows the day or the hour.

score: Christians = 1, doomsday believers = 0.
