The Painful Sequester That Is Coming

Unless Congress can come to some sort of agreement by mid-March, 2013, America will have to endure some deep shock therapy in budget cuts. It won't happen all at once, but it will for the remainder of 2013, some $85 billion will be cut. About the only thing that will spared is Social Security. All other programs will be cut and will cost the US one million jobs. That is to the already 2 million lost.

Here are some staggering slashes:

  • 2100 fewer food inspections at processing plants
  • 4000 FAA workers furloughed daily causing flight delays
  • 70,000 kids would lose Head Start
  • 14000 teachers could lose their job
  • 125,000 families may become instantly homeless because their rental assistance has ended
  • 373,000 mentally retarded adults and disturbed kids would lose their treatment
  • 600,000 women and children would lose nutrition aid
  • 2600 fewer criminal and civil cases would be handled because of staff reductions
  • 251,000 civilians employed for the Army furloughed for 22 days
  • $3 billion lost for the military's health insurance program for retirees and dependents
  • 25 USN ships would not be repaired
  • 470 aircraft would not be repaired
  • Border patrol would reduce work hours by 5000
  • $900 million cut from nuclear security programs
  • Every FBI employee will be furloughed nearly three weeks, over $500 million will be cut
  • Federal prisons will suffer a $338 million loss and each of its 37,000 workers will be furloughed for two weeks
  • The CDC will lose $350 million
  • The USN will shut down four air wings and two carriers will not be able to deploy
  • USAF pilots will lose more than 200,000 flying hours as operations stop

If the sequester happens, 2013 will be a bad year.

Well done! So easy to say we have to reduce the deficit even when we are clueless to what that means. Congress is working overtime to make this a third world country.

It won't be long

I expect there to be a last minute deal made to kick the can a little further down the road. Prepare to publish the same article in a few months.

Is there any particular group that would benefit from allowing this to lapse? I believe we are purposely going from crisis to crisis to whittle at our resolve to fight for better wages, and so on. If they can keep us from having a moment of clarity, we may see what is going on. Wizard of OZ, "don't pay any attention to that man behind the curtain."

@Jewel

You're absolutely in dream land. Do you really believe Obama is catering to big business and trying to rip off the little guy? Obama wants to raise to taxes on major corporations to throw more money at the lower income bracket, his major voting base. If anything is going on behind the scenes, it's probably that Obama wants sequestration to happen. If he can find a way to blame it on others he is at no loss.

I don't believe Obama is the savior, just a cog, in a wheel. I do not really understand your statement, you state I am in a dream land, and them end with, "it's probably that Obama wants sequestration to happen. If he can find a way to blame it on other he is at no loss." My question is legitimate. My statement regarding Oz, is directed at the system, as a whole. I don't need quick little quotes, worked out by by a think tank, to get me to run to their side. Just the truth, full disclosure, not politics, as usual.

I tend to agree with rerun, if it happens, it will be the Republicans fault in the eyes of the public.

It's everyone's fault, if the truth be known. It's a game both sides are playing, I think they call it politics? They are going to whittle away at the programs that assist the little people, workers of America, and senior citizens. I believe their will be a last minute deal, and some of what "we" need will be lost, to us all. The story line from both parties will be, "we got the best deal we could."

Thirteen years service now with the Army, almost every day my husband comments about how a military pension isn't even guaranteed. Besides the possibility of guns being taken away completely, the potential loss of military benefits of varying sorts is a frequently mentioned topic around him and his buddies. Thanks for the great hub!
