A HOME BURNS DOWN AS FIREMEN STAND BY AND WATCH

CONSERVATIVES REJOICE! In Obion County, TN your idea's about "personal responsibility", "pay your own way", and "tax as little as possible or not at all" finally had their day. On Sep 29, 2010, firemen from South Fulton, in Obion County, TN, were called out to a fire outside city limits. They didn't go there to put out the fire but to make sure neighboring structures were safe. Why didn't they try to put out the burning house, despite the pleas of the owner, Gene Cranick? Because he hadn't paid the $75 annual "pay for spray" fee, you see. The news article at the time made note that "Based on the controversy surrounding Cranick and his home, South Fulton may be revising its fire subscription services"

On Dec 5, 2011, firemen from South Fulton, in Obion County, TN, were called out to a fire outside city limits. They didn't go there to put out the fire but to make sure neighboring structures were safe. Why didn't they try to put out the burning house, despite the pleas of the owner, Vicki Bell? Because she hadn't paid the $75 annual "pay for spray" fee either, you see. I guess the County of Obion and the City of South Fulton didn't revise their policy after all.

If you want to read more on the details, I refer you to a Yahoo News video, a Digital Journal piece; Comedy Cental's Indecision, a not-so-funny piece; and for the Sep 29, 2010 fire, a Yahoo News article. The remainder of this hub will be commentary.

COMMENTARY

PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS, such as the ones in San Diego, have an ethics code that "as a Firefighter, my fundamental duty is to protect or save lives and safeguard property in the service of my community." Most other professional groups dedicated to serving the public interest have a similar one, I think the police is something like "Service First". Not in one of those will you ever find the words "unless you haven't paid your annual fee or tax."I doubt that the City of South Fulton and Obion county Tennessee are unique in America, but I bet you they are a rare breed indeed.

I wonder what was going through those firefighters minds in September and December as they stood by and, by their, the firefighters, own inaction, watched a family, including children's, life being burned down in flames around them? Were they happy that the "deadbeats" were getting their just rewards, some Conservatives honestly feel this way, or are they furious with the system that won't allow them to help people in need? (BTW, apparently, the Bell's weren't even eligible to pay the fee, so they were screwed for the get go!! I don't understand why, but that is what the article said.)

The stated reason for this city/county policy is so that they won't have to raise taxes, that would somehow be unfair. Another reason was that the county would have to build its own fire department ... too expensive, they say. As I remember my history, back when communities were small, when somebody was in trouble with a fire, the "fire brigade", a volunteer group, of citizens was called out to try to save the structure, and maybe the town. I don't recall hearing stories of them standing around cooking marsh-mellows in the fire of someones house they let burn because they hadn't paid their fee; there was no fee, I am not sure there was even a tax; they just did it out of civic mindedness and maybe self preservation and Christian charity ... the latter certainly not present in Obion County, TN. Personally, I think the South Fulton/Obion County "Pay for Spray" policy stands for about everything America is against.

Let's take the Conservatives "Pay for Spray" policy to it logical conclusion, shall we?

  • First, how about the police; they are on about the same level of criticality to a community as firefighters, wouldn't you say? Take them off the taxe rolls and charge a fee to those who choose to be protected by them; that is fair, isn't it, just like the firefighters? I draw the line at murder, so let's say somebody is burglarizing your house, the cops show up to make sure the bad guys don't burglarize the houses of those who have paid but let them steal from you because you didn't. (More realistically, they simply ignore your case.)
  • Property Tax - Make that a fee, don't pay it and your childern don't go to school, you dig your own well, dispose of your own sewage, etc, That will certainly lower your tax bill.
  • City and county emergency services, no need to have a general tax their either. If you aren't dieing and you haven't paid your fee, don't bother calling, they won't come.
  • The list goes on ... state and federal highway tax; poof gone, don't pay your fee, you can't drive on the roads that aren't your own.

If you can do it for something as American as firefighters, why can't you do it for any of these? (Although, if were left up to me, the first ones I would start with are City and County leaders and supervisors.)

Now, don't get me wrong, I think people need to pay for these services; they can't be free. But, neither can they be denied the service for non-payment either for there are other remedies down the road to extract payment other than leaving children destitute over $75, for God's sake; even atheists wouldn't come up with this type of strange construct. Obion county and the City of South Fulton need to join the rest of humanity and provide fire service like the rest of America does, as a guaranteed service that is funded through a general tax or special across-the-board assessments, which, if not paid, are dealt with in the normal way delinquent taxes are processed.

AND YOUR OPINION IS ...?

Well written, I have gotten in a discussion with GA Anderson about this very same thing. for example just because I do not have kids in school does not mean that I should not pay taxes associated with keeping the schools operating. Because after all, somebody paid for me when i was in school. Every tax you and I pay may not have a direct benefit to either of us at a particular point in time. Does that mean that the tax is invalid? This flinty attitude in regards to this crisis is unamerican at best. Thanks, Cred2

Hi Credence, I agree. I just don't understand the mindset.
