The Snake

OK guys; while I still remain firmly immersed in my Parody mode I offer you yet one more in my collection of Patriot’s Patriotic Parody’s; this one sung to the tune of that 60’s song the snake. You remember “On her way to work one morning down the path alongside the lake, a tender hearted woman found a poor half broken snake.” Well I now give you the Snake!

On his way to the Oval Office

The Speaker walked with a hurried gate

He was going to discuss the budget

With a crafty treach-er-ous snake

He knew he must be on his guard

For the truth was not to be had

And if he somehow lost the fight

The outcome would be bad

Oh Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Compromise for heaven’s sake

Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Cried the snake

He sat down in the office

Across the table from the snake

I’ll gladly give you 38 if off the table you will take

The shutdown of this bloated beast

Along with Planned Parent-hood

And Boehner right there lost his head

And thought the deal was good

Oh Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Compromise for heaven’s sake

Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Cried the snake

Well he got up from the table

Headed back to his domain

Thinking he had indeed won the fight

But the numbers they were plain

All the snake had given up

Was mirrors and a lot of smoke

And the battle he thought he had waged

Was in fact just a big joke

Oh Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Compromise for heaven’s sake

Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Cried the snake

Well the CBO exposed it

Boehner’s lunch had been devoured

For this crafty slick reptilian

Gave up nothing but a shroud

He duped the silly speaker

Into thinking he got some cuts

But in act-u-al-i-ty Boehner

Was the horses butt

Oh Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Compromise for heaven’s sake

Compromise now Mr. Speaker

Cried the snake

I seriously have to get you connected with my brother. I am in the process of setting him up an account on the hub. The two of you have such similar views and creative sense - which is slightly twisted. I adore my brother - that's a compliment.

Thanks I think; first time I've ever been called twisted as a compliment but coming from you I'll take it!

Great song and oh so true. You have really been on a roll with your lyrics lately and they are good.

Thanks Pamela

I don't feel half as agravated after laying it out in verse as I used to feel when I pounded it out in prose!

It's my playful side coming out. One of the things that I am is a little twisted myself (creative side). I think it is one of the things that endears me to my students. We have a lot of fun woven into our lessons. One of my favorites is teaching about the American War. I get a tug of war rope out and line the kids up shortest to smallest. I place the tallest children on one team and the shortest kids on the other. I then split up the smallest kids and make half of them go and sit down. Then I give pinnies (uniforms) to the tallest children and give them some tips on how to win at tug of war. This is all happening while the shortest kids are looking at me in disgust. Next, I yell, "ready, set, stop!" I then begin to pull the tallest children away. I repeat the process several times then I call the shortest kids back into the game and allow them to join the other shortest children. The tallest children are down to two now. The shortest children win. I then make the connection in history to the American Revolution and how the Redcoats were trained and had nice uniforms while the Americans were untrained but had heart. The children go home talking about history. Parents come in telling me how the dinner conversations went. I have many more similar lessons. People walk into the room during these lessons and often think I have lost it - tug of war in the classroom - yes - and we have fun learning. Soooo, I am glad you took the twisted comment as a compliment - it was meant as such!

You sound like one of those rare women that hit the trifecta; you’re blessed with looks, brains and a sense of humor; a rare find these days. Anyway the game sounds fun as well as an excellent way to teach history.

I happen to love history but would have enjoyed playing your game if one of my teachers way back when would have been as creative. The fact the students are sharing the lesson with their parents should make you feel proud that your method of instruction is working.

On another note, how’s your NEA association going these days?

Thank you for the compliments. I do so love my job. I like challenging the children to think and get pure joy out of knowing that our activities help them to learn in a fun way. I always promised myself that I would not be one of those teachers who make kids sit in their seats and take notes for most of the day. They do have their tedious tasks. We all have to learn to stand in the bank line and be quiet. I do have a moment or two still when I wish I could lay on the floor and spin like I see some of the toddler's do when life is challenging but - that's another story.

We are in the process of negotiating our contract. It will be most interesting to see what happens this round. We voted our last contract unconstitutional as some of our members tood it upon themselves to negotiate without due process. It nearly divided us but we pulled it together. The vote strongly favored the members at the top steps but left those who were midway and down really feeling the pinch. Thus, we are back to the drawing board. I am not on the negotiating team seeing that I am a fairly new union rep. Our aides have been working without a contract for over two years. Actually, many of our members stand to benefit more if the contract is not settled. In this case the members at the top will be the ones who will feel the pinch. We have a strong and fair team who understand that the economy is not good and I feel want to do what is best for all members. Time will tell.

So do you have a great singing voice to go with the tunes?

The compliment is well deserved but moving right along; you are what a teacher was meant to be but somehow along the way we lost the concept. I had a few teachers like you along the way and they were indeed special. They like you, made me want to learn and learn I did! As for you laying on the floor and spinning like some of the toddler's, well that’s a different matter. The NEA most likely would frown upon that but if it makes you feel good then you go girl!!

As for your contract; just an observation but my experience (37 years in RR negotiations) contracts always seemed to favor the members at the top! That’s why I am not totally in support of unions; they seem to leave those that really need their help in a lurch. The fat cats; even the union fat cats seem to find their way to easy street on the backs of the neophytes!

Again I offer a mere observation; they are lucky to have you and you should go full bore into the negotiations process; you have the intellect and critical thinking ability to do well. Don’t let them tell you otherwise! That from a critical thinking expert. That’s how I made my living the last five years of employment. Critical Thinking is an acquired process and you seem to have that talent judging from our recent debates.

As for a great singing voice; casting all modesty aside YES; I once had a good voice; I was lead singer in a rock group in high school and college; but that was awhile ago!

I will be waiting for the post of you singing some of your more creative hubs. Ellen is always seeking new talent from the postings on Youtube. I am not surprised to find out though that you sang in a rock group or had some very creative outlet. I on the other hand have no singing voice. I always tell people that when my sisters and I used to have to do the dishes together we used to play Name That Tune and I always won. Of course that always gets a puzzled look as I had just told them that I have no singing voice. My response is that is correct that I never won because no one knew what I was humming. My daughter on the other hand has a lovely singing voice. I like to think that God forgot to have me stand in the line to earn my singing voice so to make up for it he gave my daughter double.

As far as becoming more involved in the union my time will come. I need to get my feet wet for a year or so and learn the ropes. It's just how I operate. I do feel confident in the young woman who is our current president and the other officers. She is not at the top of the steps but she is strong and fair and I believe she will negotiate in good faith. Your compliments are very much appreciated. Without delving too much there were times in my life when there were those who did their personal best to squelch my abilities. It is nice to have friends who see the best in you. Perhaps that is why you and I have gone this route of new friendship because I too admire your talented writing and intellect.

I don’t think you’ll be seeing me anytime soon on U-Tube; first the technology escapes me and secondly and definitely most importantly it would embarrass my two kids to death. But I did love to sing when I was younger and still do in church; not in any choir but as a Catholic we sing quite a bit during the mass these days; we’ve come a long way from mumbling in Latin over our beads!

As for your musical ability one thing I’ve found is most people down play their voices and when put to the test actually do quite well. So perhaps it is you that should hit U-Tube; you have the technical skills; youth and definitely the looks to become a singing sensation overnight. I can see it now; you being introduced on America’s got talent or some similar show; and now the new sensation sweeping the nation Trimar and the Trimaids; that would be you and your sisters!

My son like your daughter was blessed with a good singing voice. His sophomore year he and his rock group were sent to Martha’s Vineyard to study at the Contemporary Music Center; from there they were sent to Hollywood where they spent 4 years trying to make it. My son also acquired an agent and appeared in a Superbowl Commercial for Pepsi; went to Rome to film a Renault Commercial and appeared in 3 Kelly Clarkson Videos and a Rod Stewart Video. Then after struggling for 4 years his now wife graduated from Ohio State; went to Hollywood; rescued him from the land of fruits and nuts and brought him back. They are now married and own a clothing Boutique in the Midwest. Sorry for temporarily lapsing into my proud papa mode!

I only encourage you to get more involved in your union because unions need good people like you. Before our friendship I felt negatively about all unions but you have opened my eyes somewhat. There are still situations like the present Boeing debacle that make me see red but once I push back from it and look at the average person (sorry for calling you average; you are anything but average) so I’ll rephrase it to say; push back and look at the average union person they are good people looking to make a living. I encourage you because I hope to see the corruption stop and it has to come from the grass roots; think of yourself as part of the Tea Party within the NEA!

You are the second person that has related a similar story wherein someone; I assumed it was your significant other at the time that was attempting to squelch your abilities; that was the case with the other one. All I can offer is the same advice I offered them; they are attempting to squelch your abilities or in your case they were attempting to squelch your abilities because they were afraid of LOOSING YOU!

I’m also glad we have become friends!

Being a proud papa is a good thing and you can tout their successes as often as you like to me. I know well the pride in one's children. I will one day write about the trials and successes of my children in more detail. It has been the history of all that has made me into the teacher that I am today. I often think that God is like an orchestra conductor. I always struggled with the story in the Bible, The Prodigal Son. He gave me two who couldn't have been more different and I learned full well to appreciate that story. My second son taught me much patience. Both of my sons make me very proud, as does my daughter. It was not always an easy road and that is putting it mildly. Howevver, in regards to the woe is me story, the past is the past and I emerged a stronger person for it. God gives us only what we can handle and He must have trusted that I could handle a lot. Life is good now and I celebrate my blessings. I recently had a reader though assume that my life has always been easy and that is why I am optimistic. That couldn't be further from the truth. I hope that people out there can learn from my life that one can overcome and continue to believe that life can improve if they make the choice to make it so.

I just wanted you to know that being positive with folks out there is such an important attribute to have. You never know when you can be that one person who can give a boost to a person who truly needs one. Thank you for being that person for many!
