Wal-Mart should not be banned in India

No Wal-Mart should not be banned in India. In fact it should be encouraged in other countries too. I am sure it is going to be an asset to our country. Walmart should not be banned also because Wal-Mart bills everything they sell and the billed money goes to taxation.

Tough competition for retailers Also, Walmart is coming here for the consumers like us. Lets make use of it. Walmart squeezes the best deal from manufacturers and passes the benefit to consumers, so I think it is an asset. Competition in the market is always good for consumers. There was no competition in post liberal era and we all can see the fruits of opening up of our markets, in form of the growth.

Tell me a local store where the owner will bill you a genuine bill so that you can make sure that a part of your money went to the government for development?

Entry of Wal-Mart into Indian market may actually prove a boon to local producers also if Walmart decides to procure inventory locally. At least the Government of India must stipulate Wal-Mart to procure at least a certain percentage of their inventory from the local markets.

Walmart will bring with it best practices to reduce the costs of operating a retail store. It is valuable information for the Indian retailers to learn. To compete with Walmart, local retailers will have to innovate. This will help the whole industry. The market is increasingly becoming global and now we have international competition all over the world.

Employment potential Lots and lots of employment potential will also be created. This increases the competition among the retail players, which is very good for the consumers/common man.

In favor of consumers One more point in favor of globalization and hence the entry of Walmart in India is that it increases competitiveness among business houses thereby providing the end consumer with many choices. You can choose what to buy at the price you like. If you don't like the price or the product, you buy elsewhere.

We need global markets to enter in our country, so it is benefited by so many people. If the company comes to India, so many people will be benefited like employment in that stores and easy access to people to buy under one roof and you can get quality food.

Walmart is a good thing for the country. Retail business is still very unorganized in India.

So my dear friend, competition in any industry will only help get things better. We always had these kinds of superstores. Something like Big Apple, Subhiksha, 365, but no one actually succeeded in providing goods at reduced prices. Once Walmart enters the Indian market, these stores might learn the process and come up with streamlined processes and hence might give a stiff competition to Walmart. They will have the advantage of knowing the local market better.

I'm not familiar enough with the facts of India's economic picture to have an educated opinion about WalMart in India; but my instinct says it would probably, in the long run, turn out to be a positive thing.

In the US we have had "issues" with large chain stores "gobbling up" smaller businesses. Small stores/shops cannot compete with the large chain stores offer low prices; so whether it's an "all purpose" store or drug store, something like WalMart can present a threat.

On the other hand, in my small-ish suburban town there was a time when there wasn't really any place for people to shop for some of the basics in life. A lot of people joke about "hating WalMart" (because it is such a "humble" store, even if a vastly successful one), and yet just about everyone loves to shop there and get reasonably priced stuff. People kind of have a "love/hate" relationship with WalMart.

Still, the hardware stores that have been there for years are still there. A local family "miscellaneous stuff" store has remained in business long after WalMart arrived. New stores have sprung up. We still have "nice" shopping malls and gift shops in surrounding towns.

The town was full of people who thought WalMart may turn into "the end of world" and "destroy the town" - and yet, here we all our, still living (and being able to get good prices for things like toasters or shower mats).

When my daughter was in school she was able to get a part-time job at WalMart (which she hated but which paid fairly well, compared with other retail jobs in the area).

I wouldn't drive too far to get to a WalMart; but since it is in the town in which I live, it's handy. We (in my area and probably many others in the US) all joke about how we "hate WalMart" - and yet when there's one in the area, and any of us needs a toaster or a shower mat, it's where we go for selection and price.

No quicksand I have not been doing a lot of shopping at Walmart on any overseas trip but I have some friends in US with whom, I am in direct contact with and they have told me things about Wal-Mart which are really fascinating and amazing. I am very sure that Wal-Mart will succeed in India and there will be a tough competition for other big shopping stores in India, thereby, benefitting us, COMMON PUBLIC".

So according to Lisa, Wal-Mart is in US for a long time now and people have been shopping for every type of item over there. It has also provided earning oppurtunity for many people and has created employment. I agree with you Lisa that critics are always there. If the critics are not there, anything cannot grow and develop. If everyone is satisified and no one is there to compare and complain, there will be monoply by a single organization. Even here in India, people love to shop at malls and there are people who like malls but then also say they hate malls. They are getting benifitted by these huge shopping malls and getting everything under one roof but sometimes when they have a bad shopping experience, they blame to all the mall as a whole and not only a single shop. So my dear friends, in every type of business, there are critics and there are people who appreciate. I know that Wal-Mart will not only help the unemployment problem in India but also it will also help India achieve globalization.

By the way, thanks for putting your nice and well-expressed thought over here Lisa.

I am sorry I have to disagree with you on this front. WalMart has many issues it needs to fix in the USA before it even considers moving abroad even though they already have. You can view many of this companies problems here http://hubpages.com/education/Anti-Walmart and get a real prospective of what they have to offer. I mean come on there willing to dislocate families, destroy land and cost taxpayers billions a year. Check it out and tell me if you really believe WalMart should come to India or be allowed anywhere.

Thanks

-Thomas M.

raj and soni.... do you know what walmart does to its competition...if u want to increase poverty in india by making small retail stores run out of business, then welcome walmart to india. The fact is that walmart has closed down more than 10,000 retail stores in America. Though consumers will benefit, its competitors will suffer and it is precisely what we do not need in India.

I think you are right Bharat. I am also feeling the same thing now. We need to look at the other side of the coin.

Even if walmart were to increase tax revenues in India how much of that money will actually go back into public service, knowing the way India is run.

The country's strongest asset is the determination and ingenuity of the common people. If walmart were in India it would just destroy their jobs and no one would end up better off.

It would just be another form of colonialism, but this time from a corporation.

Your statement is very true anon. I have done some research on this and I think I need to change the article title to Wal-Mart should be banned in India.

Sorry boy to say this but India needs Walmart but not real Indians.Don't you know what happened to us when the East India company entered our country before 20 decades,If we allow the Foreign companies in make 50% of share in retail market the Indian money will easy go to their country and even small scale shops cant survive .Do u know or not India is in top position in the world for the More number of Retail shops their share in the market would be collapsed. After all this do u really want to encourage Foreign companies to evade our Indian retail market

I absolutely think that India should allow foreign investment. The majority of the Indian people would like to see expanded options offered by foreign retails but more importantly, it is the politicians of India cheating the Indian people that has caused this resolution to fail. The passing of this resolution would have meant hundreds of billions of dollars of investment in the world’s largest democracy. Moreover, the move would have brought into place a graticule for goods transport and sale that would not only produce a huge amount of money for the Indian, American and World economies, but also put an end to the current wastage. Right now India suffers from severe hunger problems and 3/4 of India makes less than 2 dollars a day. And yet, the politicians continue to pass anti-progressive legislation. 40% of Indian crops go rotten before they meet local markets. The lack of efficiency is paid for by peoples’ lives. BUT, we must protect human life no matter the cost. When a country’s politicians disrespect Goddess Lakshmi’s good hand of fortune, they work against the progress of their people. More than that, they display a lack of respect for a force that could fight poverty and save human lives. We are voting on this right now at http://www.warofword.com/singleresolution.php?reid...

Chinese sell at very cheap rates so Indian companies are buying cheap from them and selling in India at high rates thereby making profits.
