What Are We Paying For?
Today I heard an author/expert say that
"Effective leaders lie."
I suspect that ineffective leaders lie, too.
Count up some recent leaders' lies.
Then see, if you agree with me.
Truly educated people know how to find the truth.
Bill Clinton said that he and Monica Lewinsky were not intimate.
George Bush, or someone, lied to Colin Powell about Iraq having Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Barack Hussain Obama said that every American could keep their own doctor, their own insurance, and that his Affordable Care Act was not a tax, and put a "period" at the end of his assurances.
Vladimir Putin has said that all countries (including Russia) must perform in keeping with the United Nations Charter.
Adolf Hitler said that all he wanted was enough "living space" for the German people.
Neville Chamberlain said he had secured "Peace in our time."
Franklin Roosevelt said that all the American people had to fear was just "...fear itself."
A recent Iranian leader said that "There was no holocaust."
Obama said that "the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated."
Richard Nixon said that he had no knowledge of the Watergate break-in.
And we could list the number of politicians who are in jail for lying, and a number of others who perhaps should be.
The Japanese at the start of World War II in the Pacific region said that they were simply creating an "Asia for the Asians" but made slaves of many and despised even more Asian peoples.
Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and now Kim Jong Un have promised a society that would be "a workers paradise."
Chairman Mao did away with China's first constitution in favor of a communist one, and then encouraged "a thousand thoughts to blossom" only to crush China's thinkers without regard to the new constitution, and encourage the death of 20,000,000 Chinese. Tienanmen was later.
Rulers in many lands have made many promises they knew to be lies in order to win unprecedented power from the lies they themselves knew were all too good to be true.
Satan is the father of lies, and he would have dominion over all of mankind past, present, and future..
Someone else told the truth when He said that mankind's one great hope was unconditional love. His vision of charity was known over 2,000 years ago and is still true.
Buddha's teaching, that there is eternal truth in doing nothing to harm another person, is as true today as when he taught it.
Other great teachings are still true today, although those seeking personal power distort such teachings with their clever lies.
We must be careful whose statements seem to be fixed in stone, only to have them turn out to be merely grains of sand blowing in the winds of their rhetoric.
Lies are the tools of the greedy, the evil, the manipulators, and the unjust.
The purpose of education is to teach how to find truth, and the merits of being truthful even when a shorter route to personal goals seems to justify lying in keeping with the falsehood that "the ends always justify the means."

Bending the truth is like bending a hose. The desirable smooth flow of life is interrupted until the truth can (usually painfuly) be restored.

Sometimes what is left out of a speech is more significant than what is included. There is some magic to political speeches along the idea of "now you see it, now you don't" political promises.
What defines a true leader? It isn't just charisma and sensing their power. It isn't just making us afraid so we are mobilized. It's being true, honest, fair, up front, and out front. This Haiku examines leadership.
