Should laws be passed to make advertising acurate?

companies advertise about how well products work but it is rarely true. should laws be passed that make it so the company has to be honest about their product and I don't mean using a play of words but true accuracy.

Absolutely, but false advertisement laws could be amended to make that work.

I guess the problem I have here is who has the definition of "accurate". That will vary with the subject.  There are "truth in advertising" laws in the USA and still we have those folks who bend the truth and require you to read some fine print in order to be truly clear on an issue.  There is always some sleaze bag around who can figure out a way to circumvent the system.  One example is the up-sale where the ad offers free products to you if you just call then when they have you on the phone, they push for you to upgrade the offer by purchasing more of the product at what they describe as a good deal. In the end, these things are very difficult to police and would be even harder to prosecute.  The old adage, "buyer beware!" comes to mind. WB

There are very few regulations right now and I wouldn't mind seeing more, but there's a point where the cost into ensuring quality in these ads goes above and beyond the need.

I have to agree with Wayne Brown.  Buyer beware!  I would definitely like a product or service to perform accurately.  But before new laws are passed current ones should be enforced.

I see lies and deceit in advertising all the time. There are lies in advertising laws but those are very loose. Still I think that all in all we should be more concerned about existing laws being observed than the creation of new ones.

Perhaps we should start taking legal action and even class action lawsuits against companies that practice these methods.

Yes the laws should be strengthened.  But big companies go on misleading us... and what about the "paid advertising"?  And those preachers who used to sell bottled water with the claim it can cure AIDS.  I see that has altered since I got a few of those taken off the air by my complaints to the CRTC.

I see Danone advertising their "pro biotics" while at this very moment they are fighting a class action suit over this very subject.  All yogurts are "pro biotic" by definition.  You don't have to ad anything to them.  All yogurt contains live bacteria.  You can make your own yogurt from sour milk and just ad some store bought yogurt.  It's a little more complicated than that because you have to be careful of the wrong bacteria  getting in but cleanliness will get you through it.

There are laws that regulate information being used in advertising and marketing.  But companies find a way around it.  The use "lite" in stead of "light" is a good example.

Do we need more truth in advertising? Here's some food for thought about faux labeling. How much of advertising is hype, and how much is real? read more
